• They are a combination of the American Falls the Bridal Veil Falls and the horseshoe Falls.

• They border the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S state New York.

• The Niagara river drains water from Lake Erie into Lake Ontario

How Big Is It?

• The Niagara Falls are only 51 metres high. There are more than 500 waterfalls taller than it.

• The depth of Niagara Falls is also 51 metres which means they are as deep they are high

• The Niagara Falls have the most flow rate than any other waterfall on the planet. Over 750,000 gallons flow over Niagara Falls per second. It would take the average American residence 7 ½ years to use that much water.

The science of the Niagara Falls• The current rate of erosion

is about 3 – 4 inches every 10 years so scientists think that the Niagara Falls will be gone in 50,000 years.

•  The Niagara Falls water power is shared between the U.S. and Canada. Today, Niagara is the biggest electricity producer in New York state – generating enough power to light 24 million bulbs at once, and saves the state’s residents and businesses hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

Why people visit?

• The Niagara Falls has been the most popular honeymoon destination for nearly 200 years.

• It is estimated nearly 13 million people visit the Niagara Falls every year.

• The Maid Of The Mist boat ride takes visitors past the base of the American Falls and into the basin of the Horseshoe Falls. It is North Americas oldest tourist attraction. Its maiden voyage was in 1846.

• During St Patricks Day the Niagara Falls lights up in green. Many tourists go to see the magnificent sight.

• Nearly every night the Niagara Falls lights up in the colours of the rainbow. That is why many people visit at night

• In 1859 Charles Blondin dressed in pink tights and was the first man to walk a tightrope above the Niagara Falls.

.•  In 1901 Annie Taylor was

the first person to ride over Horseshoe Falls in a homemade, barrel of oak and iron–padded with a mattress to cushion the impact of hitting the river. She survived the stunt with only a small gash on her head.

Crazy People!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!• In, 1911, Bobby Leach was

the second person to go over Niagara Falls in a steel barrel. He spent six months in the hospital recovering from his injuries, including two broken knee caps and a fractured jaw.

• In 1920, Englishman Charles G . Stephens was the first man to lose his life going over the Horseshoe Falls. Stephens made the fatal mistake of attaching an anvil to his feet. All that was found of Mr. Stephens was his arm, identified by a number of tattoos. Still strapped into his harness.
