The Place is Humming…
This last week or so we’ve begun to feel that learning has really kicked in for our children. Programmes are
up and running, people are settled once more and I can see lightbulbs going on all over the place for our
young learners. It’s a gratifying sight - after all, this is our core business and we expect ourselves to do
well. As I said to a group of visitors from Auckland yesterday who were marvelling (as many do) at our
setting and resources, “we have so much going for us at Wakefield School we have no excuse for doing
anything less than excellent education.”
That doesn’t mean we don’t stop trying to improve. For that we need your help: read on…
Community Survey out Tomorrow…
Every two years the board of trustees surveys the community to find out what’s up, what’s down, how you
feel about it and your ideas for improvement. It’s crucial information for the board and staff. So when you
receive your paper copy of the community survey tomorrow don’t waste a moment - fill it in, return it to
school, pick up your lucky number and pat yourself on the back for doing a good thing for your child’s
learning.
Be in to win!!!!!!!!
Every completed survey goes into the draw for three great prizes
One Four Square grocery voucher worth $100
Two Four Square grocery vouchers worth $50
The closing date for returning surveys is Friday 5 April.
Learning Conferences…
Big ups to you if you were one of the 85% of families that attended the learning conferences on Monday
and Tuesday - you’ve done something absolutely vital for your child’s education.
If you did not attend a learning conference, fix the problem now - contact your child’s teacher
and make a time to meet. I can’t stress how important it is to attend this meeting, it can be the
difference between success and failure for your child. So do it, or risk a phone call from a
grumpy principal!!
Teacher and Principal Paid Union Meetings…
Next week primary teachers and principals around the country who are NZEI Te Riu Roa members are
heading to meetings to vote on whether to accept or reject the latest collective agreement offers from the
government. They will also be voting on whether to take strike action should the offers be rejected.
Our staff will attend meetings on Wednesday 20 March and Friday 22 March. School will remain open as
normal during these times.
The meetings are a crucial part of the ‘Kua Tae Te Wā - It’s Time’ campaign. They’re an opportunity for
teachers and principals to come together to discuss the offer and decide next steps.
The government’s latest offers are only minimally different from what was offered (and rejected) last year.
This is because the government has refused to increase the amount of money available.
Already, many schools are having to make sacrifices because of the difficulty in recruiting teachers and
relievers, and we must take bold steps to turn this around.
We really appreciate your continued support. If these offers are rejected, it is the voices of parents and the
wider public that will be key to forcing the government to listen as we continue our campaign to ensure
every child gets the best possible education.
For more information, please go to http://campaigns.nzei.org.nz/time/ or talk with your child’s teacher.
Have a beaut week,
Peter Verstappen

Thank you to all the parents who supported our swimmers at the school and cluster events over the last week. We have had some awesome results.
Unfortunately the Regional Swimming Sports have been cancelled as the
ASB centre is retiling the lane pool.
Although the Wakefield and School Community pool doesn’t close till
Sunday 24th March our school swimming programme will be wound down.
CELEBRATE SCIENCE MORNING
A big thank you to all the parents who helped with the Wakefield School Celebrate Science morning. The
children were buzzing and the activities sparked lots of interesting science discussion.
STU DUVALL
Thanks to the PTA for supporting Stu Duval's visit. The whole school greatly enjoyed his storytelling and
cartoon tips.
SIR JOHN KIRWAN
Sir John Kirwan is in town next week and he is going to be providing some advice to those affected by the
recent fires and drought. Both of these events are difficult enough by themselves. The combined effects of fire and drought in parts
of our region are having significant effects on our community. Thanks to the generosity of Westpac who are funding JK’s visit, people can take some time out of their
day during lunch time to come and listen and get some ‘tools for the toolbox’. JK will discuss how to spot the signs of stress in yourself, family, friends or colleagues who may be feeling
under pressure from the events. JK will give advice on such topics as: opening up lines of communication

with others, how to personally manage stressful feelings and situations, where to turn for help and how to
become more resilient. It’s a great opportunity to spend a Friday lunchtime listening to this engaging speaker. Local businesses
might want to bring your team, workmates or family could get together and come down. Light nibbles
and refreshments will be provided. We don’t get these opportunities for free advice of this calibre very often – you don’t want to miss it! 12.30-1.30 at the Hope Community Church, Ranzau Road, Hope. Cost: free!
