THE PRINCPAL'S MESSAGEAs the end of another academic year approaches, it is an appropriate tim(
to reassess the strides made by The Sterling Hall School and the greacontribution that the 1997-1998 students have made. The leadership, which has been shown over the last two years, is here tc
stay. This year's Grade 8 class has demonstrated what effective leadership
is all about. As students, they have introduced new initiatives; they have lec
with enthusiasm and they have led by example. As a result, the House Systenis healthier than ever, in addition, the growing relationships between tht
younger and the older boys have enriched our school community, and wil
only strengthen as SHS grows.
This yearbook is the record of a year of consolidation. 185 students weredivided into 12 classes and they all made their contribution - academicallyculturally and athletically. This was also the year of the Cultures project, z
school-wide experiment which was a resounding success.
As ever, this was a year of personalities - and when actual events are forgotten, this book will help|
to remind us of the characters who made up The Sterling Hall School, 1997-1998, a year which w€shall remember with a sense of achievement.
To those who are returning in September, let us pledge to continue to develop our school; and tc I
those who are leaving SHS, go with grace, good will and our blessing. i

THECHAIRMANOFTHEBOARD'SMESSAGEThis has been a milestone year at SHS. We celebrated the 10"" Anniversary
of the school last November with the Founder, Ms. Darlene Ferris, alumni,
families, current parents, friends, faculty and staff. In saluting our history it
is appropriate to remember that the environment of
the school is structured to encourage each boy to
develop his own ability to learn and attain a personal
balance that will serve him well after graduation fromThe Sterling Hall School.
SHS is now being recognized as the premierindependent boys school concentrating on students
from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. Our school's
unique specialization focuses on developing a posi-
tive attitude towards learning, leadership, personal
development and a desire to help others.
The creators, editors, and contributors to the 1998 yearbook are excellent
examples of these traits and attitudes. This yearbook captures the words andpictures of our fine young school.
In this 10* Anniversary year, may I extend to you all my congratulations andthanks.

THE HEAD BOY'S MESSAGEThis year has been an outstanding one for The Sterling Hall School. As
Head Boy, I have had many opportunities to proudly represent our school.
This year has been so full of special events that it is hard to sum up in a few
sentences just how remarkable it has been. I think of the moving Remem-brance Day Assembly, the Citizenship Swearing In Ceremony, the Season
of Lights Concert, Arts Evening, the Invitational Public Speaking Contest and
many other events that bring us together as a community.
As President of the Student Council I was lucky enough to be part of an
organization that provides every boy in the school with the opportunity to
voice his opinion. We heard many fabulous suggestions this year which were
in turn taken to the Principal for his consideration. The class representatives
did a wonderful job as did Mrs. Pitcher and Mrs. Raley.
I would like to wish the entire SHS community all the best and to congratulate everyone on a great
'ear! I will never forget all the great times I've had at The Sterling Hall School.

FOUNDER'S DAY/TERRY FOX RUNThe Sterling Hall School has a strong tradition of athleticism and
community service. Every October this tradition is evident when wecelebrate Founder's Day with the Terry Fox Run. Parents, grandparents,
friends, staff and students participate in this wonderful event.
The SHS community has shown wonderful support for the Terry Fox
Foundation. This year SHS raised an unbelievable $13 000 for cancer
research, which earned us the CISAA trophy for the second year in a
row, as the independent school that raised the most money per capita.
Through the Terry Fox Run and other such events, SHS demonstrates
its spirit of giving to the larger community.

REMEMBRANCE DAYThe day started with introductions by masters
ceremony Josh Giampietri and Eric Crawford,
ley explained the meaning of Remembranceay and introduced boys from each grade to
ad poems. There were many musical selections
eluding a beautiful flute duet played by Aurele
I Bosset and Benjamin Gordon, called "Fly
ee". The Junior Choir sang "In Flanders Fields"
id Mr. Robinson spoke about Remembranceay and introduced our guest speaker, Mr. Ni-
lolas Stethem. Rahim Ismail then played "Theast Post" on his tin whistle followed by a min-
e of silence. To close the ceremony, the au-
ence was treated to a few more poems andevin Doe sang "Close Every Door".All those who took part should be proud of
leir contributions to this special ceremony.
In memory and in honour of Nicholas
Stethem, father of 1997 graduate Jon-athan, who spol<e at this year's Remem-brance Day Service. Sadly, Mr. Stethempassed away in January. He will begreatly missed.

CULTURESDuring October and November, all
students at the Sterling Hall School
took part in a "Cultures" unit. Each
class, from gradesJK to 3, chose a spe-
cific country to study. JK and SK stu-
died China, Grade 1 chose Germany,Grade 2 took a close look at Japan and
Grade 3 focussed their attention on Af-
rica. Another group, made up of stu-
dents of all ages, took a careful look at
Egypt. The students in grades 4 to 8were divided into groups according to
their specific interests. These work-
shops focussed on music, cuisine, crafts,
structures, and legends from around
the world. Other students chose to
create a family tree, while an-
other group worked to document this
whole school event on tape and in
print. At the end of the unit, we joined
together in the gym to celebrate "Our
Cultural Looking Glass."
It is up to each one of us to recog-
nize that every person has a unique
heart. Our cultural looking glass helped
us to understand that we are all spe-
cial and that together, we contribute to
a very important place; our world.

HOUDAY CONCERTThis year's "Season of Lights" concert was wonderful! Just a few
highlights include the Grade Seven and Eight Bands, the Grade
Four classes on the tin whistle, the Primary Choir, the Junior Choir
and the Junior and Senior Kindergartens. There were also two
beautiful solos: Campbell Gordon on the flute and Benjamin
Gordon on the piano. One of the new events this year was the
Candlelighting Ceremony. The room looked amazing with all the
candles lit and the gym lights off!
Mrs. Van Doleweerd did a great job of directing and organizing
the event, Michael Siu created an amazing cover for the program
and the gym looked unbelievable with all its decorations. But, the
best thing about the concert was that the entire school took part and
made it such a success!

How Barrie Got Its Name
One day in 1910 a man stumbled across a forbidde
land. The man's name was Jack Wenster. He was aboi
to eat his lunch when a huge black bear came out of th
woods and ate all of Jack's lunch. Jack ran away froil
the bear. Later that day Jack came across a patch of beries. Since he was hungry he ate them and because the
tasted good he named the land Barrie.

Wind
As I walk through the forest
[in the blackness of the night,
To the warm glow of my houseThe wind blows through the trees like a fox on a
hunt.
It scares meI
Yet, it holds me as if I were a baby and it wasmy mother.
It seems to talk to me,Yet, it cannot
I think I can see it.
But it is invisible to the eye.
As I near to the warmth of my houseThe wind cries to me like a wolf to its pack.
It wants to hold me.As if I were its golden child.
As I enter my houseThe wind dies as if its heart had been pierced.
I laugh,
The wind has no heart

addition this year of bistro tables, electric
candles and a black and white colour scheme

A poem to honour the graduating class of
1998
When I was in JKWith apologies to A.A. Milne
When I was in JKMy tears went away.
When I was in SKCelebrated each hundredth day.
When I was in oneWow! Reading was fun.
When I was in twoWe hatched a zoo.
When I was in threeLong division was me.
When I was in fourKnew a seed from a spore.
When I was in five
Frangais came alive.
When I was in sixBuilt a house out of sticks.
When I was in sevenNearly blew us to heaven.
I'm now finished eightI feel clever as clever.May I continue to learn
For ever and ever.
