1980- Pac-Man was released.• Pac-Man is the

world’s best selling coin-operated game.

• In the 2010 Guinness book of world record’s gamers edition named Pac-Man for the most recognized video game character at 94% of American’s recognizing it.

• Pac-Man was released on May 22nd in Japan, and in October for the U.S.

• Game designer Tohru Iwatani’s idea for the Pac-Man character came from looking at a pizza with a slice missing.

1981- The Ronald Reagan Assassination Attempt

• John Hinckley Jr. shot Reagan in his lungs.

• The shooting happened around 2:25 pm just after Reagan gave a speech at the Washington Hilton Hotel.

• Hinckley shot 6 bullets

• Also injuring 5 others.

• The shooting happened in 2-3 seconds.

1983- Cabbage Patch Kids became popular

• The first cabbage patch kids were called “Little Person Dolls”.

• The original price was $30-$40. • It became a 2 million dollar brand

almost overnight• All hand-picked features to ensure

every doll is unique.

1984- PG-13 movie rating was created

• Created on July 1st • Was created

because it was determined the certain intensity levels of the rating criteria are not appropriate for children under the age of 13.

• Was created by The MPAA (Motion Pictures Association of America)

• Has a higher level of mild to moderate profanity, illegal drug use, moderate violence, and mild nudity to sexual situations

1985 The Wreck of the Titanic Found.

• they first found the location of the ship by locating the debris and following it until finding a ships’ boiler

• There was a total of 2,224 passengers, only half had a life boat, 1513 people died in the icy waters

• The 45,000 ton Titanic sunk 13,000 ft down; the 2 pieces of the ship are 1,970 ft apart

• Was found 73 years later on September 1st 1985 at 1:00 am

1986 - The Challenger Space Shuttle Explodes

• At 8:30 am The seven crew members were strapped to their seats and at 11:38 am the Challenger launched

• 73 seconds later into the mission the Shuttle exploded.

• Launched at Kennedy Space center at Cape Canaveral, in Florida

• Launched from pad 39-B

• NASA, and THIOKOL failed to fix the problem

• The crew survived the explosion but when the cabin fell into the ocean at 45,000-65,000 ft at approximately 200+ mph it finally killed the crew.

• The problem was the destruction of the o-ring seals and the faulty design of the solid rocket booster joint.

The seven crew members were , Francis R. Scobee, Michael J. Smith, Ronald E. McNair, Ellison S. Onizuko, Judith A. Resnik,

and Gregory B. Jarvis.

1987- DNA was first used to convict criminals.

• DNA never lies, but can be misleading.

• DNA profiling was used in a criminal case, a double homicide in England. DNA helped prove the innocence of a man who gave a false confession

• Over 240 convictions have been overturned thanks to DNA evidence

• DNA could mean life or death to the people charged or convicted of crimes.

• A mother almost lost her kids because her DNA didn’t match her children’s. The DNA in her blood didn’t match the DNA in the other parts of her body, this woman had Chimera.

1988- U.S. Shoots Down Iranian Airliner

• Happened on May July 4th

• Was mistaken for an F-14 fighter plane.

• Once a missile was shot it killed 290 civilians including 66 children, 38 were not Iranian.

• The 6th worst aviation disaster

• It was flight 655• Leaving from

Bandar Abbao, and headed for Dubai

• The flight was going to take around 28 minutes

• Left the airport at 10:17, 27 minutes after its scheduled departure time which was 9:50.

1989- Students Massacred in China’s Tiananmen Square.

• 6 days after Hu Yaobang’s death of a heart attack, 100 students gathered to the square

• They gathered to speak about why they were disappointed with China’s Authorative Communist Government.

• 40 universities began a march on April 27th. Filling the square with over 1 million people.

• On June 3rd tanks were sent to retake the square.

• 2,000-4,000 people were brutally killed along with 300 soldiers.
