MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENTCharles Crow • Club President
News from THE TURTLE POINT YACHT & COUNTRY CLUB • JUNE 2012
FROM THE MANAGER Bill Colloredo • General ManagerThe transition from Spring to Summer brings many fun events to Turtle Point and will hopefully bring you and your family outeven more often to enjoy the great amenities and special events at your club. Make your reservations now to treat Dad to ourFather’s Day Brunch! Check out the menu on page 4 of our newsletter. Also, our ever popular and fun Camp Turtle Point willprovide hours of fun and memories for your children. Included in Camp Turtle Point will be golf, karate, crafts, swimming andtennis. The golf course is in great condition and prime for golf. In fact, we just completed the 8th annual Turtle Point – OldWaverly Challenge. Our Turtle Point Terrapins were victorious. I was very proud to be part of the Turtle Point team and host tomembers of my former club. They were very impressed with our facilities, food, golf, service and of course, the best setting for agolf club in the South!
Just a reminder – Our Membership Initiative is underway. The prospective member “club preview” time continues through June 17. This is the perfect opportunityto introduce your friends to the club and let them enjoy the amenities of the club and the "Turtle Point Experience." Current Turtle Point members can extend aninvitation to sponsor prospective members. Each prospective member will be given the opportunity to experience the exceptional facilities here at Turtle Point. Thetrial period for your prospective members ends on June 17. Each prospective member that wishes to take advantage of this program must make application formembership and have a letter of recommendation from a Turtle Point member. Please contact Membership Chairman Chip Rasch (256) 740-9912, Tricia Mayes orme at (256) 757-2153 for more details regarding the initiative. We will gladly arrange a tour for your prospective members and answer any questions that they mayhave. Please call us for more information. Remember:For each new member you sponsor, you will receive a $50 per month food credit for six months. In addition, the primary sponsor will receive one month credit equal to the one month dues amount that your new member pays.
Thank you for supporting your club. I hope to see you soon and often.
I stated in my newsletter last month that Iwould give an update for our Club’s year-to-date financial operations.
Our fiscal year runs from October 1 throughSeptember 30. We historically operate the Clubfor the first six months of each fiscal year at aloss due primarily to the fact that, other thanDecember, a large special events month, thewinter months are very slow with golf incomedown and only a few special events.
I am happy to report to you that the Club hasexperienced a much better than average fall
and winter season. The Board had budgeted a loss of $165,923 total for the firstseven months of the fiscal year but, as of our closing financial statement of April30, we are actually showing a small operating profit of $703.
As I stated previously, the Board of Governors and department managers havetaken a hard look at the club’s operating expenses during the past months and wehave been able to cut some operating costs, especially some of our labor costs, while not sacrificing the quality of service that you deserve. We feel that thoseefforts to date have been successful. We were also blessed with a very mild winterwhich allowed much more golf play than usual. Thanks to the weather and theefforts of Les Holcombe and his staff, the Golf Operations Department has a netprofit of $70,386 as opposed to a budgeted loss of $15,370 for the seven monthperiod.
Over the winter months, we have been most fortunate to keep ahead of budgetwith member dues and initiation fees income. We normally experience some lossof membership over those months and gain few new members. I am happy toreport to you that we have experienced very little loss of membership during thepast seven months. We are currently ahead of budget by $51,848 in our dues andinitiation income.
Glen Junkin continues to manage the golf course operations finances very welland is currently ahead of budget by $19,000 in his department.
We do continue to work with our food and beverage operation as it is currentlybehind budget by $15,000 with a net loss of $33,052 as opposed to a budgeted loss
of $18,075. Bill Colloredo is currently in the process of hiring a new food andbeverage manager. This manager will be expected to improve food quality andconsistency, improve our already excellent level of service and most importantly, grow our revenue while controlling expenses.
I would also like to report that we still have a balance of $55,955 in the Club FacilityMaintenance assessment from last year. This money is only spent with Boardapproval for major maintenance repairs and equipment replacement costs. Wealso budgeted an $8,000 monthly allowance for these type expenses and, luckily, have not had to use any of that allowance year-to-date. We also have a $50,969balance remaining in the Waste Water assessment of 2009. These funds are onlyused for the operating costs of the waste water system.
I hope that I haven’t bored you too much with all these numbers but I feel that it isimportant that you are informed about our financial condition.
To summarize, I feel that we are making headway with our finances but thesummer months are critical to our budget. We have many weddings and privateevents scheduled for the remainder of the year which should be profitable for theClub.
With a successful summer season we can hopefully make needed improvementsto our financial position, especially our operating cash flow.
You, as a member, can be of great help with two very important pieces of ourfinancial puzzle for the remainder of the year. One of those pieces is the currentmembership initiative. In the past two membership initiatives, we have been ableto attract twenty to thirty new members and it is critical that this year be just assuccessful. We all have friends and business associates who would enjoy beinga member of Turtle Point, and there are financial rewards for you to solicit newmembers, so please take some time and make an effort to assist Chip Rasch inthis year’s membership initiative.
The second and maybe the most important thing you can do to help is to simplyUSE YOUR CLUB! We have a great facility and your management staff is workingvery hard to improve the quality of service that you deserve. I encourage you tomake full use of all the amenities your Club has to offer.
See you at the Club!

TIPS ONTENNIS
The Sport of a LifetimeWithout a doubt the Junior Programis a real strength here at Turtle Point. In my opinion, the kids are learningmore than just forehands andbackhands. Tennis is an individualsport. Consider the followingregarding team sports such asfootball, basketball, baseball to namea few. Have a bad day and the coachcan simply send out a replacement. Also, note how in tennis there are noreferees or umpire. With tennis youare on your own and sometimes withno coaching at all (USTA). Here aresome of the positive characteristicssuccessful tennis players arelearning:
1. Physical discipline2. Able to concentrate3. Goal setters4. Positive thinkers (We hope!)5. Learn from failure6. Willing to learn and be taught7. Willing to sacrifice8. Love to win9. Are surrounded by other
champions10. Gives respect
Keep your child active in our programduring the summer months. Throughtennis, we can make a positiveimpact on your child.

In order to enhance our practice facility, we recently added target areas to the landing
areas. We placed reflective devices on top of the flagsticks that are located on these
“target greens”. The reflective devices will enable you to use your range finders, as
you do on the golf course, to find out the distance to each flagstick.
Please follow golf etiquette and use the 90 degree rule, fix your ballmarks, and fill in
divots. These few steps will help improve the quality of the golf course for all.

Summer is here, so let’s have a dock party!! Our new
docks and Quarter Deck are open and ready to be used by our
entire membership. I hope everyone will take the opportunity to
come down and enjoy our new facility. The new Quarter Deck
is a great place to have a cook-out with friends and family. The
new Transient Dock is the perfect access point to the lake.
Our 4th Annual Kentucky Derby Party was aBIG success this year. The weather was perfect, the food
was spectacular, and the music was great. I think a good time
was had by all.
Plans are underway for our Annual Boaters’Weekend with Guntersville Yacht Club. I hope everyone will
mark your calendars for the weekend of July 20th. This is
always a great party down at the dock!
