Our website has grown into something much bigger than I could have ever imagined and it continues to grow each day

From time to time I come across a non working link a bad typo or just something that doesnrsquot meet the standards I try to maintain on it

As many of you going on feedback and hits re-ceived each day regularly look through different sections of the ACN website

I would be really grateful if you could let me know when you come across something that doesnrsquot work or is not quite right

I welcome all feedback and some of the improve-ments I have been able to make to the site have been as result of suggestions or advice from parents in our support network

Over the last couple of months a few people have raised the

idea that we should organise a night out for families in our

network

I certainly like the thought of that especially as on the occa-

sions when I have attended an event along with other parents

from our network it has always been a wonderful night

At this stage I am putting the following dates out there

For the South Saturday 8 October

For the North Saturday 15 October

I am open to all suggestions for a restaurant the only criteria

is that it must be something thatrsquos affordable for allmdashin oth-

er words not too expensive

Liz who has taken on the role of Projects manager with

ACN will be helping making the dinner for the south hap-

pen while I will oversee the northern dinner

Once we decide on a venue I can make a booking and ar-

range a per head price so that everyone knows in advance

what we will each pay on the night

I welcome all thoughts

Frances is a new parent to our net-work She is also a tutor I invited her to provide us with some information as I know there are many families who have asked me if I know of any tutors who cater to the needs our kids Dear Steve As we discussed yesterday I am a professional teacher of over 20 years experience who has a qualification in Special Education I am a mother to a 5 year old with ASD and this has inspired me to run TOPMARKS TUTORING specialis-ing in teaching children with ASD ASPERGERS DYSLEXIA ADD ADHD and many other learning diffi-culties Subjects are all primary areas with an emphasis on all Literature such as READING RECOVERY SPALDING MULTILITMathematics from K-6 English up to Year 10 Specialisist in Naplan do their mark-ing every year and have run 2 day workshops at tutoring centres such as earning Centre and James An I am based in Sans Souci and work on Saturday as well as afternoons I also run Transition to School classes which are always popular in Term 4 You can contact me at topmarkstutoringhotmailcom or 0406061670 Frances Carbone I have added Francesrsquo details onto the TUTORS page in the Schools section so you can still access them in the future from there

New research hopes to crack the difficult code of autism

WHEN her daughter Amelia was diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome Kate Berrill was surprised - but prepared It was still a shock but because we have two other children with an autism spectrum disorder our family life is already or-ganised in an ASD-friendly way so its not like the diagnosis required a big upheaval or anything she said Riley Berrill was diagnosed with autism at age 3 eldest sister Grace was diagnosed with Aspergers later the same year and middle child Amelia earlier this year New research shows the risk of a child being diagnosed with autism if a sibling already has the condition is as high as one in four The international study of almost 700 infants found an overall risk of 19 per cent if one other child in the family had autism - but for boys that risk was higher at 26 per cent If two siblings have the disorder the chances of a third sibling being diag-nosed was as high as 32 per cent

The study by the US-based UC Davis MIND Institute and due to be published in next months Paediatrics journal is the larg-est study ever conducted on the topic

Researchers said the results had implications for genetic coun-selling for parents and for referral to early intervention for younger siblings

This study shows that the younger siblings of children with au-tism spectrum disorders need to be tracked very carefully and this may require more than the normal surveillance that a pae-diatrician might typically do lead researcher and psychiatry professor Sally Ozonoff said

This should include very explicitly and regularly checking in with parents on whether developmental milestones are being reached

Autism affects a childs ability to think communicate interact socially and learn Mrs Berrill said she had no doubt there was a genetic link to autism She said her family from Granville coped with having three children on the spectrum by focusing on the positives

Grace is a brilliant singer and Amelia is a talented writer and I think that is due to the fact that they have an absolute focus on a certain area of interest We talk about the things they can do rather than their limitations Mrs Berrill said

My daughter Tamikah is 3 years old and on the Au-tism spectrum I was at a complete loss how to overcome her lack of interest in eating most foods And even then she would only eat if I spoon fed her my-self Her diet was limited to yoghurt pureed fruit soups and toast Milk was a big staple too I had tried so many different things to try and get her to eat normal food but had no luck at all I was put onto a Speech Pathologist who specialises in children with feeding difficulties named Debbie Alvarez In the last two months I have seen my little girl go from eating mainly pureed foods to eating things like roasted broad beans roasted chickpeas hash browns chicken nuggets fish fingers cruskits vitawheats and a large range of cereals She is also drinking different fruit juices including Prune juice I honestly never thought I would see Tamikah eating like this

And she is now feeding herself We still have a long way to go but I feel this is a wonderful achieve-ment Debbie has a way of making eating fun and caters to each childs specific needs Some people may not agree with Debbies methods but Tamikah and Debbie play with food a lot feel it throw it around play catch build things with it use it as instruments blow it out of their mouths and even kiss it Debbie will do whatever it takes to just get Tamikah to touch a certain food and put it in her mouth without any force - Maria from Caringbah

Positive Directions for Lives of Meaning and Fulfillment What Families of a son or daughter with developmental disability find it difficult to achieve the same

good ordinary opportunities for them as for their other children This new workshop has been developed to help families explore the reasons and some strategies for helping a person with disability have a good life as part of their community
