Below is the Barnton Parish Church entry for the baptism of Thomas on 29th June 1851.
Thomas began his working life as a ship’s carpenter, probably on the river Weaver at
Winnington for Brunner Mond and Company. He was still living at home with his parents,
aged 19, at the time of the 1871 Census.
On 31st December 1874 he married Annie Burgess at Barnton Parish Church.
The marriage entry in the parish register (above) says that Annie’s father was Samuel
Handcock. I think Handcock should be Hancock. Was Samuel Handcock really the father of
a child with the surname Burgess? The witnesses to the wedding were Peter Hindley
(father) and Jane Hindley (a younger sister).
Annie Burgess was from Cogshall Lane, Anderton. (More detail and a picture on page 6.) It is lucky
that her date of birth, 13th August 1854, has passed down to us through the generations as
there was another Annie Burgess in the Northwich area, registered in the same quarter,
with a birth date of 2nd July 1854. At some later date Annie Burgess became known as
Hannah Hancock.
At the time of the 1881 Census Thomas and Annie were living on Runcorn Road, Barnton,
with 4 young children.
In 1885/6 Thomas Hindley qualified for a vote by virtue of living in a house in Lydyett Lane,
Barnton. Around 1886 Thomas had a house built at 1 Nursery Road, Barnton, by
Appleton’s of Winnington. Electoral records (up to 1900) tell us that he qualified as a voter
at this address for the years 1887-1900.
The 1891 Census lists Thomas and Annie at Nursery Road, Barnton, with 5 children.
THOMAS HINDLEY (1851-1936) 1851THOM/2
Disaster struck the family on 17th August 1891 when Hannah died during what would
have been her 8th child. She was 37 years old.
On 3rd October 1896 Thomas married Ellen Hazeldine, a domestic cook, who was living in
Thelwall at the time. Ellen had been born at Nottingham in the last quarter of 1851, the
eldest child of William Hazeldine, engine fitter, and Mary Ann Woolley, lace maker, who
married in 1849(Q2).
Two of the witnesses were Ellen’s brother, Frederick, and Thomas’s brother, Edward. Jessie
Wynne later married George Hindley, son of Thomas. May Wynne was a sister of Jessie.
At the time of the 1901 Census Thomas and Ellen, both listed as 49 years of age, were
living at 1 Nursery Road, Barnton with Ann’s children, George, Harry and Lucy.
The 1911 Census tells us that all the children had left 1 Nursery Road, and that Ellen’s
mother, Mary Ann aged 79, was now living with Thomas and Ellen.
Mary Hazeldine’s death was registered at Northwich in 1917(Q4). She was 86. Her daughter,
Ellen, succumbed to breast cancer and she died on 16th
November 1918.
Several people came to look after Ellen when she was very ill,
including the Astburys who lived opposite “The Poplars”, and
Mary Stock ( right) who was to become his third wife in July
1919.
The Civil Registration marriage of Thomas and Mary was
registered at Northwich in 1919(Q3). Mary Ann Stock was
christened at Barnton Church on 26th December 1902. Her
parents were James (labourer) and Hannah Stock of 13 Lydyett
Lane, Barnton. There was one girl from the marriage.
Thomas continued to work at Brunner Mond as a shipwright and
carpenter until his retirement at 70 years of age in 1921.
THOMAS HINDLEY (1851-1936) 1851THOM/3
Brunner Mond became part of ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) in 1926. Thomas and Mary continued
to live at 1 Nursery Road, Barnton, until 1936 when Thomas died on 6th October 1936.
He was buried in the churchyard at Barnton.
Thomas was a keen gardener and his land was stocked with many fruit trees, particularly
apple and plum trees. He did not think much of education and this restricted his children’s
development but he did believe in hard work hurting no one. His son George had to read
books in secret. Sometimes Thomas took on an extra job making coffins and George had to
help his father sand them down.

Son George lived at number 29 (bottom of this road on the left) when he married.
THOMAS HINDLEY (1851-1936) 1851THOM/4
Thomas was a strict teetotaller, as illustrated in the following passage from “My Life Story”
by Walter Atkinson, husband of Thomas’ daughter Annie Hindley. From page 52:-
“Annie’s father was a total abstainer and strongly demurred against taking any
intoxicating liquor. After very strong persuasion from the whole of the party he yielded to
temptation, broke his pledge for once, and honoured the toast to his eldest daughter’s
health by sipping a little port wine.
Mr Thomas Hindley came to stay with us for a few days soon after we were married
(Nov.1901). He had never been to London before so I took him round to see the principal
sights, it must have been a wonderful experience for him.”
Thomas Hindley with granddaughters Ethel and Mary at Staple Hill, Bristol, in 1926 or 1927. Ethel and Mary
married Terrell brothers in the 1930s and lived on their farms in Somerset.
Towards the end of his life Thomas had virtually no money. His younger brother, Edward,
used to visit Thomas once a week in his chauffeur driven car, a distance of only a quarter of
a mile. Edward would hand over ten shillings to Thomas to keep him going. Later the ten
shillings was drawn from a bank on Runcorn Road, Barnton.
Thomas’s last Will was drawn up by Moss (of Moss and Haselhurst, Northwich) a few
months before he died but he was too ill to sign it. Thomas’ third wife, Mary Stock, and her
daughter were allowed to live on at I Nursery Road, but they had to take out £100 mortgage
on the property. The family finally ended their stay at the house after Mary Stock died in
1968. Under the terms of the Will the house was sold and the proceeds were split into
several portions.
THOMAS HINDLEY (1851-1936) 1851THOM/5
Cottage in Cogshall Lane, Anderton. Once the home of Hannah Hancock (Annie Burgess), Thomas’ first wife.
This oil painting of a cottage in Cogshall Lane, Anderton, Northwich, was painted by
“Bramley” in 1968. The cottage was demolished around 1940 and Bramley produced this
painting from a water colour and from the memories of Lucy and Walter Watkin who were
living at Tyddin Felin, Cogshall Lane, Anderton from 1965 - 1986.
A Mr Hough (who married Lily Kidd) used to walk along Cogshall Lane and one day he
stopped to talk to Lucy and Walter. They talked about the cottage that used to be up the
lane. Mr Hough mentioned that Mrs Kidd (probably his mother-in -law) who lived in
Broadway, Barnton, had a small water colour which had been painted when the cottage
was still intact. Mrs Kidd loaned Lucy and Walter the water colour and introduced them to
Christopher Bramley, a painter, whose mother-in -law, Jessie Stephenson, also lived in
Broadway. Lucy and Walter thought the painting was quite a rough portrayal of the cottage
so they gave Chris Bramley a more accurate description based on their memories. Bramley
agreed to produce a painting for them and some time later returned with this oil painting.
The cottage was about a quarter of a mile up Cogshall Lane from Marbury Road, a short
distance off the lane on the left hand side, also accessible from Cowmuck Lane, off Hough
Lane. This cottage was part of the Marbury Estate and Samuel Hancock who was employed
as a gamekeeper lived here in the second part of the 19th Century. Samuel’s daughter Annie
(also known as Hannah) married Thomas Hindley (1851 - 1936). Lucy (Hindley) and Walter
kept the painting until 2003 when they moved to Norley. They kindly donated the oil
painting to David Hindley for inclusion in Hindley family history.
