Cross sections were computed from thethree-dimensional model of stratigraphic units based on the elevationmaps shown in figure 14 (sheet 2). Difficulties were encountered inmapping the stratigraphic unit comprising the Wedron and MasonGroups and Cahokia Formation, especially in the southwestern partof the study area, where these sediments are thin or absent. To inte-grate this unit with the upper Glasford Formation, which is in placesexposed, required assigning the Wedron and Mason Groups andCahokia Formation a minimum thickness of 15 ft (see discussion onsheet 1 under “An internally consistent geologic model and set ofmaps,” fourth paragraph). This permitted a smooth integration ofthe Wedron and Mason Group surface with the upper GlasfordFormation surface across the area. The assumption of a minimumthickness also affects areas where modern streams have incisedGlasford Formation and older deposits; there, the top of the olderdeposits in these valleys has been effectively lowered by 15 ft, pro-ducing a minimum 15-foot thickness of Cahokia Formation alluviumin the riverbeds. The presence of Cahokia Formation alluvium is rea-sonable and is generally supported by field observations. However,as a consequence of the assumed minimum 15-foot thickness, thinsurficial deposits also are shown along valley margins where theymay not actually occur; in such places, modern erosion has locallyexposed upper Glasford Formation and older deposits.
