President John Nicol: A new season brings new faces, new names to remember and new challenges to take on. What isn’t new is the commitment, passion and desire required and demanded for our club to be among the elite. This is my 10th year as president and I’m as hungry and keen for success as ever, as I know every person involved at the club is. We’re 50 years young and we have an exciting plan for the future of this great football club. Make sure you are a part of it. Go Tigers!

As I have said before, we need people involved in our club who are going to help us drive the positive outcomes that we’re all looking for. We need Werribee people to stand up and be counted – a call to arms as such – to get behind the club for 2015 and beyond. We want to have a playing group that’s going to play with real spirit and enthusiasm. The players want to be a group that has a strong trademark and culture. We want to take the game on and play a sustainable brand of football. We’re after a winning season: that is, to have more wins than losses and make the nals. From there we will be aiming to win a nal and then reset and go again.
Senior coach John Lamont.
I’m really proud to be the captain of the Werribee Tigers, joining the likes of players such as Dom Gleeson and Robbie Costello, who I have so much respect for. I’ll be well supported in the role by three great vice-captains, Scott Sherlock, Ben Speight and Jesse Crichton. The playing group is very excited to get the season under way, having started sweating it out on the training track in October. We have spent the best part of ve months gearing up for round one against Geelong at Avalon Airport Oval on Friday, April 17. The excitement levels are building as the date creeps closer. We have a lot of new faces but will remain the same hard-nosed team you have come to expect from us under John Lamont’s coaching. Our rst two games for the season are at Avalon Airport Oval, including that rst round under lights. We would love to see a big crowd helping us ignite our 2015 VFL campaign. So bring your friends and show your support. I guarantee we’ll be giving 100 per cent effort to put on a good show.
Captain Michael Sodomaco. 2015 is going to be another big year for the club. It’s great to have
Ballan Holden back as the major sponsor for the 16th year in a row. Our social venue, the Tigers’ clubhouse, has a new look inside after renovations last year. I highly recommend you take the family for a meal there soon. We continue to work with Wyndham council towards redeveloping Avalon Airport Oval at Chirnside Park, and we hope to make a major announcement on this very soon. If you have an event such as a birthday or family celebration, keep in mind our function room upstairs, Chirnside’s by the River, as a possible venue. Get behind the club and show your colours and your support in 2015.
CEO Mark Penaluna.

Reminiscing with John Lloyd, 1971 best & fairest.“I had a pretty good year in ’71. I was playing ruck rover so I was getting a fair bit of the ball and I thought I’d be there or thereabouts [for the best and fairest]. I won the Bridge Hotel award as well. We had some good players like John Comben; Jimmy Burke was a young player coming through, and Bruce Montgomery had a good year as well.” John remembers Bruce Comben was something of a conspiricist as a coach. “He was funny; he’d be out on the ground at three-quarter time and he’d be worried who was listening. He thought someone might be able to sneak secrets back to the other side. He didn’t have any great strategies or anything, but he did look at the opposition. I remember one day we were playing Brunswick and he said to me, ‘They have a guy, an up-and- coming player. I want you to get on him and give him one. You know, get into him, sort of thing.’ So I followed instructions and the Brunswick players came after me from all angles. That up-and- coming player was future Brownlow medallist Keith Greig”

Community engagement.In 2009, the Werribee Football Club became the first VFL club to appoint a full-time community development manager (Chris Gallagher). His focus is on the sports development and participation programs in the city of Wyndham and surrounding areas. Under Chris’s direction, Werribee staff, players and coaches share in helping educate young children, aspiring athletes and community clubs through seminars and sessions that cover aspects of leadership, healthy living and other benefits gained through sport.
The Werribee club also has appointed a multicultural development officer (Shaggy Bol) who undertakes a number of initiatives, which include:
■ Increasing participation of young migrant people in sport and recreation activities;
■ Increasing opportunities for participation in sport and volunteering in the community;
■ Raising cross-cultural awareness of organisations to enable them to provide increased sporting opportunities for young people; and
■ Addressing specific barriers to participation, thereby increasing the uptake of these programs.
The goal of these projects is to increase new arrivals’ and other migrants’ involvement in sports clubs and other recreational facilities in and around Werribee. Participation can include joining a sporting club as a player, volunteering in a club or just going along as an observer.
Building strong connections in the local community has always been a priority of the Werribee Football Club, and it’s only made possible by the support of community partners Bendigo Bank and Pacific Werribee.
