Hello everybody!Today I am very happy to be with you all.
Let me start off by telling you a bit about myself. (in Chinese)
我叫
My name is Shaz Lawrence
When I arrived in Taiwan..
My Chinese friends wanted to find the bestChinese name for me.
My friends decided my name should be ‘Sha Rong’.
Of course, When I had just started learning Chinese, a lot of the sounds sounded the same.
When I heard them say: ‘Sha Rong’...
I thought they said: Sha Ren (killer)
I said: “NO WAY”! Of course they all laughed at me.
So this is a very good lesson for learning Chinese...
Therefore my Chinese name is Sha Rong not Sha Ren.
I am Australian.
In the past, I studied Chinese at Fu Ren University in Taiwan.
Also, I studied Chinese at Nanjing Normal University.
Around 1980, the Australian Government mandated that every student from 5-17 learn a second language.
The priority languages were: Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian.
Therefore, I have been teaching Chinese for a long time and have taught many different grade levels.
......From very small children to Secondary students.

The results found that a chunking mechanism underlies the perception of Chinese characters so learners tend to organize
information into chunks to reduce processing load.

Beginner learners use global strategies to identify characters. Beginners try to set up a relationship between the characters with some pictures that already exist in the brain.
For learners at the Intermediate and Advanced level, the radicals play a more important role in the process of perception.
Chinese characters can be perceived by two basic modes:
Global to local (global perception) and
Local to global (local perception)
Local perception is more efficient than global perception

What does this look like in the classroom?
• From Day 1, students are engaged in exploring characters using radicals.
• Radicals are what unlock characters
• Radicals provide ‘hooks’ for memory
