TOP HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS LAUDED WITH NHG AWARDS
Record number of 36 individual and 12 team awards presented
15 July 2016 The National Healthcare Group (NHG) gave out its highest accolades today at the annual NHG Awards Ceremony, to recognise staff who have made significant contributions towards public healthcare in the fields of clinical, operations, education or research. 36 individual and 12 team awards were presented – the largest number since the awards were established in 2001. All winners received a plaque, certificate of appreciation and a cash prize. Three new categories were also introduced – the Distinguished Senior Clinician Award; NHG Young Achiever Award and the NHG Team Recognition Award – bringing the total number of categories to seven. Guest-of-Honour and NHG Chairman, Madam Kay Kuok commended the efforts of these staff who have helped shape a world-class public healthcare system. She said, “Singapore is recognised as one of the top public healthcare systems in the world. It is an achievement which we must commend our healthcare workforce for their tireless dedication and their relentless pursuit for excellence. Their commitment and contributions have raised the quality of care and will inspire a new generation of healthcare professionals.” NEW CATEGORIES DISTINGUISHED SENIOR CLINICIAN AWARD The Distinguished Senior Clinician Award recognises veteran doctors or surgeons for their contributions in clinical, education and research practice. The three inaugural winners of this award are: Professor Leo Yee Sin who has made major contributions in the area of Infectious Diseases, both locally and internationally, and has diligently established a strong Department of Infectious Diseases in Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), which included the development of the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology (IIDE). As Clinical Director at the Communicable Disease Centre (CDC), Prof Leo assumed a pivotal role in overcoming the SARS crisis in 2003 and provided clinical leadership to the healthcare team in TTSH on the management of SARS cases right from the onset.
She also developed clinical protocols for SARS for the Ministry of Health and hospitals in Singapore. Professor Chong Siow Ann, Vice Chairman, Medical Board (Research) of the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), who has been instrumental in building up mental health research across the nation and in advancing key areas of research including epidemiology, early psychosis, schizophrenia and health service research. He has also made significant contributions to training of mental health professionals, including the formulation and implementation of the roadmap for mental health research in IMH and throughout Singapore. As Medical Advisor and former Director of the National Skin Centre (NSC), Professor Roy Chan has demonstrated great clinical acumen in his management of dermatological cases and sexually transmitted infections. He spearheaded the expansion of the Centre’s subspecialty units - the cornerstone of NSC’s success as a Tertiary Dermatology Centre of Excellence - and supported the timely introduction of new advances in dermatology to ensure the highest standards of clinical care. In 2013, Prof Chan collaborated with A*Star and the Nanyang Technological University to establish the Skin Research Institute of Singapore (SRIS) to nurture a world-class dermatology research programme. NHG YOUNG ACHIEVER AWARD The Young Achiever Award aims to develop a new generation of healthcare leaders by recognising the contributions of staff between the ages of 30 and 40. The 10 winners represent the clinical, nursing and allied health professions, including: Dr Glenn Tan who is a dedicated clinician and teacher; he undertakes the training of healthcare professionals and medical students from the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine), and oversees the development of the School’s surgical curriculum. As a Consultant with the General Surgery department, he pioneered the Fenestrated Endovascular Aneurysm Repair Programme in TTSH, which involves a surgical procedure to treat thoracic aortic disease and performed the first ever procedure in the region which led to the uptake of this surgery to treat patients across Asia. Dr Tan has also received the NHG Education Leaders Award. As the nursing lead for patient safety at IMH, Mr Darren Lim is responsible for setting the strategic directions in quality management for the Nursing Department. He is part of the Patient Safety Monitoring committee to improve the monitoring of high risk patients and he has worked with the Suicide Prevention Taskforce to develop the patient safety monitoring system at IMH. Mr Lim is known for being approachable in his management style, often going beyond the call of duty for his colleagues and patients alike.
Ms Lai Phui Ching, Assistant Director at the Primary Care Transformation Office at National Healthcare Group Polyclinics (NHGP) has helped set up the Patient Safety and Clinical Quality unit. She also championed improvements in the Patient Safety and Quality Framework which contributed significantly to NHGP’s JCI Accreditation in 2012. A pharmacist by training, she was the project manager for NHG’s Medication Safety Reconciliation Collaborative, and led in safety initiatives which helped in the redesign of medication systems to improve medication safety across various institutions in Singapore. NHG TEAM RECOGNITION AWARD The growing chronic disease burden has resulted in more complex patient needs, which has in turn made teamwork an essential part of care delivery. The NHG Team Recognition Award recognises top-performing teams which have contributed significantly to the improvement of healthcare delivery processes. 12 teams were commended for their exemplary achievements, including: The TTSH Virtual Hospital (VH) team which has received the Gold Recognition Award. The programme was established in 2012 to address the needs of frequent admitters, and is a new model of care designed to support patients who are at high risk of hospital readmission. Through a 6-month quantitative programme concluded in March 2016, Emergency Department attendance has been reduced by 32% and inpatient admissions to the hospital down by 44%. Additionally, there is a reduction of 2,427 days in total length of stay for patients who have reached six months of care under the VH team. This shows that patients are spending more quality time at home and in the community, supported by the medical attention given through VH. NHG GIVES OUT HIGHEST HONOURS In addition to the three new categories, NHG also celebrated the achievements of winners who have received the Lee Foundation-NHG Lifetime Achievement Award, NHG Distinguished Achievement Award, NHG Outstanding Citizenship Award and the NHG Education Leaders Award. The awards given out for the remaining categories were:
