2 . 1 UNPACKINGRemove t he TS-180S trom its shipping box andpacking ma te ria l and examine it for visible damage. Ifthe equipment has been damaged in shipment notifythe transportat ion company immediately . Save theboxes and packing materia l for f ut ure shipping ormov ing.
The following accessories are furnished with theTS- 180S transceiver :

to wire the power connector directly to the vehiclebattery , and that a fuse or circuit breaker rated at 20amperes be installed in the positive supply line closeto the battery .
2.4 ANTENNAFixed Station - Any of the common antennasy st ems designed for use on the high-frequencyAmateur bands may be used with the TS-1S0S . Thetransmission line should be coa xial cab le, and th eante nna system should show a standing wave ratioof less than 1.5: 1 when usin g 50 ohm co axialtransmission line. If open wire or balanced transmission line is usad, a suitable antenna tunar is recommended between th e transcei ver and the f eed line oCon struction and operating methods for such tunersare described in deta il in the A RR L A nrenna Hend
book, and similar publications. For operation on the7 5 and 40 meter bands, a simple dipole antenna, cutt o resonance in the most used portion of the band,w ill perform satisfactorily. For operation in the 10,15, and 20 meter bands, your stations efticiencywill be greatl y enhanced if a rotary beam antenna isused . Remember that even the most powerfultran sceiver is useless without a good antennasyste m.If the ante nna system SWR is too high, the resultmay be damage to the final transistors or deterioration of transmit signal quality. Make sure that theantenna syste m SWR is less than 1.5 :1. If it cannotbe reduced to less than 1.5:1 , use of an antennatuner IAT-1S01 is recommended .
Mobile Station - Mobile antenna installations arecrit ica l, since any mobile antenna ter use on thehigh -frequency bands represents a number of compromises. Many Amateurs lose the efticiency of theirant enna through improper tuning . Remember thefollowing points when using th e TS-l SOS with amobile antenna.
The " Q" of the antenna loading coil should be ashigh as possible. There are several commercialmodels available which use high " Q " coils.
The loading coil must be capable of handling thepower of the transceiver without overheating. In theCW mode the power output of the transceiver w il lexceed 100 watts.
The SWR bridge is a useful instrument, but unfortunately it is quite often misunderstood, and overrated in importance. Basically, the SWR bridge willindicate how closelv the antenna load impedancematches the transmission line. With long transmis-
sion lines, as used in many fixed-station installations, it is desirable to keep the impedance matchfairl y close in order to limit power loss . This is par ticularly true at the higher frequencies. The longerthe line , and the higher the frequency, the more important SWR becomes. However, in mobile lnstallations the transmission line seldom exceeds 20 feet inlength, and an SWR of even 4 : 1 adds very littlepo wer loss. The TS-1S0S final st age is, however,equ ipped with a built-in protection cir cuit whichdetects the SWR of the antenna system and lowersthe transmit power output t o about one-tenth whenthe SWR exceeds more than 3: 1. Therefore, makesure the SWR of the antenna system is less than1.5 : 1. If the TS-l SOS is to operate into an antennasyste m w here the SWR cannot be made less than1.5 : 1, an antenna tuner (such as the KenwoodModel AT-1S01 should be used . By using an antennatuner, matching between the tran sceiver final stageand the ante nna can be opt irnized , and the TS-l SOScan be operated safely at full power.
The really important factor w ith your mobile antennais that it should be carefully tuned to resonance atthe desired operating frequency . The fallacy in usingan SWR bridge lies in the fact that it is sometimespossible to reduce the SWR reading by detuning theantenna. Field strength may actually be reduced inan eftort to bring SWR down. Since field strength isthe primary goal, we recommend a field-strengthmeter ter antenna tuning .
For antenna adjustment s, the transceiver should beloaded at minimum power, using the RF PWR controlinstead of operat ing at full power output, This w illlimit f inal-staqe transistor dissipation during adjustments, and will also help t o reduce interferenceto fellow operators. In any case, do not leave thetransmitter on for very long at one time. Transmitjust long enough to tune, and get a field-strengthreading . Start with the antenna at the center of itsadjustment range and ob serve the ñeld-strenqthreading. The field-strenqth meter may be set on topof the dash, on the hood , or at an elevated locationsome distance from the car.
Change the whip length one -half inch, and againcheck the field strength . Continue this procedure until the point of maximum field strength is found. Thisadjustment will be most critical on 75 rneters,somewhat less critical on 40, and on 10 meters theadjustment will be quite broad. After tuning theantenna to resonance , the finals can be loaded to fullpower.

2.5 MICROPHONE
Attach the rnicrophone connector to a suitablernicrophone, as shown in Figure 2-2 . Be sure themicrophone PTT switch is separate from themicrophone circuir. as shown in Figure 2-3.It should be noted that a microphone with a 3P plugusing a common ground terminal should not be used.
The microphone input is designed for 500 to50 kohm microphones. The choice of microphone isimportant for good speech qua lity, and should begiven serious consideration. The c ryst al lattice filterin the transceiver provides al! the restrictionnecessary on audio response, and further restrictionin the microphone is not required. It is more irnportant to have a microphone with a srnooth , flatresponse throughout the speech range .
Follow the microphone manufacturer's instructionsfor connecting the microphone cable to the plug .With many microphones, the push-to-talk buttonmust be pressed to make microphone audioavailable . For VOX operation , this unwanted featuremay be eliminated, if desired, by opening themicrophone case and permanently connecting thecontacts which control the microphone audio .

If CW operation is desired, connect a key to the KEYjack. Use shielded cable, and a standard (mono or2Pl phone plug.
2 .7 EXTERNAL SPEAKER ANOHEAOPHONES
Receive audio output from the TS -1 SOS is 1.5 wattsat 4 to 160hms. The TS -1S0S has a built-inspeaker. An external speaker may be connected tothe SPEAKER jack on the rear panel. The speakermay be an S-ohm permanent-magnet type, 4 inchesor larger. The internal speaker is disconnected whenan external speaker is used. Headphones should alsobe 4 to 16 ohms impedance. When the headphonesare connected to the front-panel PHONES jack. thespeaker is disabled.
2.9 GROUNO
To prevent electric shock, and reduce the possibilityof TVI and BCI, connect the transceiver to a goodearth ground through as short and heavy a lead aspossible .
2.8 RTTY (FSK)
For RTTY operation, connect a teletypewriter to theRTTY KEY jack on the rear panel of the transceiver.

4.2 RECEIVER TUNINGTurn the POW ER switch on. The meter, dial sca le,and VFO indicator will light ind icating the transcei veris operat ing. The input to the receive RF amplifier is attenuatedapproximately 20 dB, providi ng distortion less reception . This feature may be used in cases of receiveroverload , caused eit her by a strong local signal, ordu ring weak signal recept ion when a strong adjacentsignal may blank the rece iver .W hen a st rong signal appears adjacent to the signalbeing received, place this switch to the " RGC" position, and the RF gain control c ircuit is activated toprevent cross modulation . The RGC function is ava luable and unique featu re of the TS- l 80S, preventing fr ont-end overload, w hich is a prob lem cont inge nt t o many t ransceivers. When the RF A GC isactivated by adjacent-channel signals, the S-meterreading for t he on-channel sig nal will be reduced .Th e RF AG C detects adjace nt st rong signals at thefi rst mixer and automatica lly activates the PIN diodeattenua tor. W hen the RF AG C functions , crossmo dulation at the first mi xer it prevented . VOX (Vaice Operated Transmit) OPERATIONAdjust the t ransceiver as described in paragraph4 .14 . Place the STANDBY switch in VOX and, whilespeaking into the microphone, increase the VOXGAIN until the VOX just operates . For VOX operationit is desirable to clase-tal k the microphone to preventbackground noises from tripping the TS -1 SOS intotransmit mode. Check that voice peaks are stillwithin the 1 S dB COMP range on the meter. Ifnecessary, readjust the MIC GAIN.If the VOX circuir is activated by speaker noise, adjust the ANTI-VOX control (on the rear panel) . Inc rease the control as necessary for proper VOXoperat ion. Excessive ANTI-VOX will inhibit VOXoperation.
Do not use more VOX or ANTI-VOX gain thannecessary. If the VOX circuit transfers betweenwords, or holds too long, adjust the hold time constant by the DELAY control.

4.15 CW OPERATIONAdjust the TS-1SOS as described in Section 4 .12and 4. 13 . Connect a key to the rear panel CW KEYjack, and place the MODE switch to CW (WI DE orNAR). Place the standbv switch to SEND fortransmitting.CW sidetone is monitored through the transceiver'sspeaker.
OPERATlON W ITHOUT CW FILTERTo receive CW, set the IF SHIFT control to its centerposition and the RIT switch to OFF. Adjust the rnaintuning for about an SOO-Hz beat and your transmitfrequency will be tuned (zeroed) to the transmit frequency of the station you are receiving. Duringreception, the side tone is activated by the key (VOXoff) . In this case, listen to the side tone superirnposed on the rece iv e signal and adjust the main tuningfor similar side tone and incoming CW aud io tone. Bydoing so, t ransmit frequencies will be zeroed . Youmay now adjust the RIT fo r a pitch which suits yourpreference. If interference is encoutered, adjust theIF SHIFT. For more convenlent and effective CWoperation, use of t he op tional YK-SSC CW fi lte r isrecommended .

The ACSY connect or on the rear panel provides forint erconnect ion w ith an amplifier. See the ampli f ierinst ruct ion manual to determine whether th e linearrequires a normally opened or normally closed (during receivel relay contacto Connect th e amplif ier control line to either pin 5 (N.C.) or pin 4 (N.O.duringrec eive) . Connect the Ground (Shield l of the ControlLine to Pin 2 and Pin 7. Connect amplifier A LC to pin6 of the ACSY connector. The TS-1 SOS output isquite adequate to drive most amplifiers to full rat edoutput.
4.17 RTTY OPERATIONFor RTTY FSK operat io n. a demodulator andteletypewriter are necessary . Th e demodulatorshould be des ig ned to operate from an audio inputand be equipped w it h a filter for 2 12 5 /229 5 HzINARROW, 170 Hz shift).
To key the FSK circuir, insert a relay coil into theteletypewriter closed loop circui t and connect therelay contacts to t he RTTY KEY jack on the rearpanel. Fig. 4 -S shows the relat ionship betweentransmit and receive frequencies. Sett ing the M ODEswitch to FSK automatically decreases final stage input power permitting extended operation .For AFSK or SSTV operation , signal may be inputt hrough t he M IC Jack. Set MIC GAIN or RF PWR forapproximately 50 % Duty (112 Power). Read eitheron the RF or IC meter position .
4.18 SPEECH PROCESSORThe TS - 1SOS Speech Pro cessor uses the receive IFamplifier as a compression amplifier during transmitoA separate AGC ci rc uit is provided in the transmitmode. 4 .20 MIC ATTENUATIONThe TS -1 80S is provided with a speech processorcapable of 30 dB maximum compression . Since thegain between the microphone and transmit IFamplifiers is quite high, microphone gain control forshallow compression with a high output microphonemay be difficult . In such cases, a 20 dB attenuatorcan be inserted between the microphone and inputamplifier. Th e changeover can be done by changinga jum per pin on the IF unit , as shown in Fig . 4 .9 .

• When SLOW COM P is selected, the meter returnsslowly . Thi s is normal and is not a malfunc t ion.
2) Thermal ProtectionThe TS-180S is furnished with a heat sink largeenough to dissipate final -stage heat. However,when final -stage temperatu ra rises abnormallydue to continuous transmission in CW. transmission w ith an incorreet load or over long sessions ,this protection circuit detects the corete mperatu re of the final -stage transforme r anddecreases transmit power output ,Th is ci rc uit resets w hen the heat sink t emp erature returns to ambient level.

6. 1 Receiver
The receiver is of the sing le conversion type using an8 .8 3 MHz IF circuit.The NB (noise blanker) circuit is of the double conversion t ype . The signar from the ANT or RX ANT isapplied through the PIN diode (BA3 79 x 2) RF ATTcircuit in the RF unit to the antenna coil in the CoilPack un it.The signar is stepped up by the antenna coil, ampliliedby the RF AMP 03 (3 SK73) in the RF unit, and is ledto the balanced mixer circuit 07 and 08 (2SK125 x 2)via the buffer amplifier 0 6 (2 SK125), to obtain an8 .83 MHz IF signal. Th is IF signal is fed to the IF unit(X48-1 240-00) where it is divided into two signals.One signar is amplified by 03 (2 SA 101 5), detected byD1 and D2 (IN60), and is amplified by 04(2S C94 5).Then, it is fed to the RF unit and amplified by 0 4(2SCS45) to control the RF AT T circuit oThe other signar is appl ied to t he ceramic fi lter (CF1)via buffer ampli f ier 0 1 (2 SC460). Th e signar from 01is also fed to t he NB MI X circui t 06 . The signar fromCF1 is ampl if ied by 0 2 (2 SK 19) and is fed to thecrystal fi lte r (X F1 fo r SSB; XF2 [op tion) lor CW)th r ou gh th e N o i s e Bl an k er gate D7- 10(1 S 158 7 x 4 ). The signar f rom the crystal filter isampli fied by 01 5, 16 and 17 (3 SK73 x 3) and is fedto t he buffer amplifie r 02 8 (2 SC4 6 0) via the (op tionall SSB filter. Thi s sig nar is then det ect ed by theproduct detector D43 and 44 (IN60 x 4 ) t o producean aud io signal. Audio passes throug h the active LPF029 (2 SC 10 0 0 ), and is fed to the AF VOX un it. Thissignar is applied to the power amplifier Q 1 to dr iv ethe speaker .
6 .2 T ransm itter
The microphone signar is applied to the M IC preamplifier 032 (2S C1 0 0 0) , the M IC gain control, and theMIC amplifier 033 (TA 7140P). Microphone inputimpedance may be 500 ohms to 50 k ohms. If themicrophone output level is too high, the 20 dB at tenuator can be inserted by moving the jumper onthe IF un it. The MIC amplifier (033) output is fed tothe balan ced modulator D60-64 (IN60 x 4) where itis swit ched by the carrier signar from the bufferampl ilier 034 (2SC460) to produce a DSB signal. ThisDSB signar is applied through buffer ampl ifier 035(2 SK 19) to the crystal filter and is converted to anSSB signal. Amplified by th e 3- stage IF amplifier015-17 (3 SK731 , it is fed to the optional 2nd SSBcrystal filter. 0 1 5-017 also function as t he processor Compression am plif iers, operating continuous ly during SSB t ransmission . Processor con trol is accomplished by switching th e tra nsmit ALCcircuit time constant for the Com pression am plifiers

to SLOW or FAST. The signal Irom the Compressioncircui t is led to the optional SSB crystal lilter,amplified by IF amplifier 022 (3SK73), and appliedto the RF unit. The IF amplifier 022 also controls RFPOWE R, external and internal ALC. The signar fed tothe balanced mixer 04 and 05 (3 SK73) in the RFunit is mixed with the VCO (Voltage ControlJedOscilJator) output to produce the final frequency,which passes through a 1-stage tuning circuit and isfed to 01 (3 SK73) where the power is reduced lorgain compensation and protection operation. Thissignar also passes through the B.P.F. (Band PassFilter) and is amplified by wide band amplifiers 02(2 SC1 59 5) and 03 (2 SC741), and output is fed tothe Drive unit through wh ich 10 W output is obtained by 01 (2 SC207 5) and the push-pull amplifiers0 2 and 03 (2 SC2 50S x 2) . This output dri ves t heFINA L un it where it is amplified to 100 W out put by0 1 and 02 (SRF1714 x 2) . The 100 W output is fedto the antenna through the LPF (Low Pass Filt er ) andthe antenna relay . In the LPF unit, the antenna SWRis detected and the rectified error voltage is f ed backto O 1 in t he Co il Pack uni t to red uce the drive forOutput prot ect ion. Th e LPF unit also detects ALC.
6.3 NB CIRCUIT
Th e TS -1 80S NB (noise blankerl circuit va ries the input of the no ise amplilier across th e IF bandpass toobtain excelJent noise separation. The IF signar fedto 01 (2SC460) 01 the IF unit (X48-1240-00) isdivided into two signals. One signal is applied to theNB gate circuit D7-1 O (1 S1 587 x 4) via the ceramicfilter and IF AMP 02 (2SK 1S ). The ot her signar is fedto the NB mixer 06 (2SK 19) w here it is mi xed withthe 8 ,375 kHz signar Irom 014 (2 SC4 6 0 ), the NBosci lJator. Thus, th e out put of 06 is converted to8,830-8,375 =455 kHz. Since the NB oscilJat orcan be varied by ± 75 kHz with the NB TUNE control , the ou t put of 06 is adjustable from 530 to380 kHz . This output is amplilied by 07-9(2SC460) and detected by D3 and D4 (1N60). Thedetected out put is DC amplil ied by O 10 (2SCS4 5),011 (2SA 1015) and 012 (2SCS45), and l ed to theNB gate circuit D7-1 O. In this circuit the input signalis switched OFF according to pulse no ise duration.The switching period is generally several microseconds and does not affect the signar w hendemodulated. The total circuit has a signal subci rcuitand a noise amplifier circuit; the signar path is adjusted for noise timing beca use 01 the difference inthe circuits (phase lag). This signal-to-noise timing isob tained by the ceramic filter inserted in the signalcircuit o
6 .7 IF DUAL FILTER
The IF amplilier has a crystal lilter XF 1 at its input . Ifthe option 2nd SSB lilter (YK -88S) XF3 is added tothe output 01 the IF amplilier, the lollowing 3 effectswill occur. (The IF amplilier now has two SSB lilters,hence the name IF Dual Filter.)

6.6 SPEECH PROCESSOR
The TS-180S speech processor uses the receiver IFampl iliers as a compression amplil ier duringtransmission (see IF unit X48-1240-00) . The signallrom the SSB l ilter IXF 1) is amplilied by the IF AMP015, 16 and 17 13SK73). The output 01 017passes through buffer amplilier 019 12SC460) andis rectilied by D17 and 18 (1 N60) to detect signalpeaks. This rectilied output is amplilied by 021 andis led back as an AGC voltage to 015 , 16 and 17 tomaintain a constant signal amplit ude. Compressionis always ON. Th e transmit AGC circui t has bothSLOW and FAST time con st ants. In SLOW mode,R115 (4 7 ohm) and C9 4 11 0 I' F) are connected tothe RFB terminal th rou gh the CM 1 terminal to lorm aSLOW time co nsta nt circ uit along with R114(2 .2 M ohm). In FAST mode, the CM 1 terminal isshorted to the CM2 terminal to lorm a FAST timeconstant circuit with R114 (2.2 M ohm), C93(0.022 I'F) , C55, C58 and C61 (0 .0022 I'F). Selec tion 01 the AGC circuit t ime constant betweentransmission and reception is made by relay RL1-2.In rec eive mode, the gain 01 016 and 17 would betoo great lor transmission . This gain is reduced bychanging the sou rc e resistance 01 016 and 17 during transmission . In receive mode, 018 is ON by+ 8 V present on its base , holding the sourceresi stance 01 016 and 17 to 330 ohms IR66 andR70) . In transmit mode, 018 ls OFF because its basevoltage is O V, so the source resistance 01 01 6 and17 is 470 ohms (R74) and circuit gain is reduced.
6.4 RF ATT CIRCUIT
The TS -180S RF ATT circuit, (shown in Fig. 6.1),uses two pin-diodes to attenuate the input signa!.The pin -diodes 18A379) have an excellent lorwardbias current vs. high Irequency resistance characteristic. Therelore, the RF AMP bias voltage will alwayssell-adjust to the point at which optimurn crossmodulation characteristic is obtained. By applying abias volt age to the RGC term ina l, the high Irequencyresistance 01 D1 and D2 is varied and the ci rcu itlunctions as an attenuator. In Fig. 6.1 the inputsignal lrom the antenna is led to the coil pack RFamplilier v ia the RAA terminal , Cl , Dl and C5 . 01and 02 (2SC1815) lorm a differential amplilier. Inreceive mode, + 8 Vis present on the RLR t erm inal,so 01 turns ON. Thus D 1, connected to the collector01 01, is lorward biased. When the A TT switch isturned ON or RF AGC voltage is detected du e to ahigh inp ut signal, DC voltage is applied to the RGCterminal and , hence, 02 is energized and a currentIlows to D2 . Th is reduces the resistance 01 D2which in term s 01 high Irequency, redu ces theresistance between the signal circuit and ground ,and thus the input signal is attenuated . Differentialamplilier 01 current is also reduced which, in turn,reduces D1 current , and thus D 1 resistance is increased. In transmit mode, the RLR terminal isgrounded, so 01 is OFF, D 1 ls OFF, 02 is ON and D2is ON. Thus, the input to the RF amplilier is groundedand therelore separated frorn the antenna circuir.eliminating any RF input during transmission.
6.5 PRE MIX UNIT
Various frequencies are mixed in this unit . This unitcontains the FIX CH CAR oscillator FIX/M RIT, 01(2SC460). 02 is a buffer amplilier lor the output ,and 03 is a buffer amplilier to l eed the FIX CHIVFOoutput to th e memory unit. Th e VFO , extern al VFOand memory input s are each l ed t o th e diod e switchD4, D3, D2 and D 1, and to the lo w pass l ilter (DC to8 MHz) where the harmonic component ls removed.The input w ithout harmonic component is led to thebuffer amplilier 04 (2SC460). This output is mi xedwith the FIX/M RIT output (46 .6 MHz) oscillator bythe DBM (double balanced modulator) 07ISN76514N), through buffer amplilier 06 (2SC460).This converted output is 40.0-40.5 MHz , which isled through buffer amplilier 08 and 09 12SC460 x 2)to the COUNTER ASSY unit. This signal is also mixedw ith the CARRIER oscillator output 013, 14 and 1512SC460) bythe DBM 011 (SN76514N). This outputls 48.83 -49.33 MHz, and is led to the PLL unit viabuffer amplilier 012 12SC460).
