The SES™ TS Series from T-Lon® provides universal application in severe operating conditions. The U-Cup seal design is made from PTFE and other polymer alloys and is mechanically energized with a corrosion resistant , SlantPitch™ spring. The spring maintains a constant live compression load and is further energized by system pressure. The TS series is available in standard and custom Rod, Piston and Face seal designs to meet your specific application requirements.

Seal Selection Guide The matrix below is intended to help in the selection of the correct seal configuration for your application. Use the top bar to determine which operating conditions apply to your application and then go down the chart to see the seals that meet the criteria (marked with an X). Since several seals may fall into one or more categories, look for the design that satisfies the widest range of parameters most important to your specific applica-tion. For further explanations please refer to the page numbers listed within the chart. Contact the factory with any questions or to discuss your specific requirements.
Note: The chart on this page is intended as a “guide” only for use in the seal selection process. Applications contain many variables that can affect the seals perform-ance. Testing of the seal by the user in their specific application, under all possible conditions, is required to determine the ultimate suitability of any seal.

The standard beveled lip is used on radial rod and piston seals in lubricated or dry operat-ing conditions where no abrasives are pre-sent. The beveled lip allows lubrication or PTFE particles under the seal lip to extend life. If abrasives are present we recommend the TV series seal design (see inside back cover). Part Number Prefix: Industrial: TS10S Mil / Aero: TS20S Flange: TS30S
The Snap-In lip is designed for use in Step-Cut glands described on page 4. The seal has one lip that is squared off to lock under the retention step of the seal groove. This allows the seal to be snapped in place without the need of a two piece separable gland. For rod seals the OD lip is squared and for piston seals the ID lip is squared. Extended Seal
Extended length seal designs are intended for use in pressures over 3000 and up to 10,000 psi. They are also used where exces-sive clearance gaps (beyond those recommended, see page 4 and 8 - 10) are present. The increased material thickness at the back of the seal acts as a built in back-up ring to help prevent seal failure due to extrusion. Extrusion (see illustration at right) occurs most often when high pressure is combined with high temperature and large gaps behind the seal. The extended seal design is available

Flanged Seal Design Rotary & Reciprocating Applications.
Rotary: In rotary applications the seal must remain stationary inside the gland and never rotate with the shaft. The standard TS series seal is suitable for slow rotary motion of less than 50 sfpm (surface feet per minute). To prevent seal rotation, the seal must be mechanically locked into the gland. The flange on the OD of the TS30 seal design is squeezed by the retention plate to act as an anti-rotation device. The TS30 flanged seal can handle speeds up to 400 sfpm at pressures under 100 psi. The determining factor is PV or Pressure (psi) x Velocity (sfpm). The TS Series seals have a PV rating of about 40,000 depending on all of the operating parameters. To determine the maximum pressure divide 40,000 by the sfpm. As the speed increases the pressure must decrease and vice versa. Remember to consider the maximum speed rating and pressure limitation of the seal. Other factors including seal material, media, temperature and dynamic surface hardness contribute to the life of the seal and shaft. Reciprocating: The flange seal is also used in reciprocating applications. The flange keeps the seal locked into place preventing axial movement of the seal in the groove. The flange also acts as a secon-dary seal to prevent any leakage past the OD seal lip.

Gland Designs
Two Piece Gland Spring energized seals generally require a two piece gland design to insure against dam-age during installation. Since the seal is made from stiffer polymers, it is not easily stretched or compressed like an o-ring that fits into a one piece gland. There are some combinations of diameter and cross section that allow the seals to fit into one piece glands without any adverse affects. Please consult the factory with your specific re-quirement. Step Cut Gland An alternative is the “Step Cut” gland where the front of the one piece groove is cut down to ease installation. The retention step is adequate to retain the seal in most applica-tions. The seal must go into the groove from the back (closed) side with the open side facing the pressure and retention step. The seal should never be installed open side first in this type of groove since there is no sup-port to back it up. Snap-In Lip Seal It is recommended that the Snap-In Lip de-sign (see page 3) be used in step cut glands. The square lip snaps in behind the step to improve the retention of the seal. The Snap-In lip should be located on the OD for rod seals and ID for piston seal step grooves.

Surface Finish The surface finish of the hardware is extremely important to the success of the seal, especially on the dynamic surface. Finishes that are too rough will cause seal leakage and excessive wear in dynamic applications. Unlike elastomer rubber contact seals, PTFE seals do not need surface imperfections to hold lubrication and can run on very smooth surfaces with or without lubrication. Testing over the years by PTFE resin manufacturers has demonstrated that the optimum surface finish for dynamic PTFE seals is between 4 - 8 Ra. Static seals can be used with finishes as high as 32 Ra depending on the media. Light gases like helium require better finishes than viscous liquids like hydraulic oil. Please refer to the charts for additional infor-mation.

Dynamic Surface Hardness The hardness of the dynamic surface of the hardware is important in order to prevent wear caused by the seal material, and to in-crease seal life. The recommendations in the chart are based on seals running in non-abrasive, lubricated or dry medias. If the media is abrasive, the dynamic surface hardness should be in-creased to prevent damage to the hardware. Please consult the factory with your specific application requirements.
¹UHMWPE is only recommended for slow rotary speeds less than 10 sfpm.

The graphics to the right are a general comparison of surface finishes and how they effect the mating seal material. They are exaggerated and intended for illustration purposes only. The better the surface finish, the bet-ter the surface contact of the seal. This increases the sealing capability in light gases and lowers the seal wear in dy-namic applications.

Formulating A Part Number The TS series part number consist of seven designators for product options that come after the TS series prefix. 1. Seal / Gland Type 2. Seal Length 3. Lip Style 4. Dash Size 5. Spring Material 6. Spring Load 7. Seal Material By utilizing your application operating conditions and the information in this design guide, you can prepare a part number for your specific requirements. If you are having trouble or consider your application to be outside the TS series product capabilities, please contact the factory. An applications engi-neer will be happy to discuss your needs and determine the right product. Custom designs are available and seldom require any tooling charges.
Part Number Steps: 1. Utilize the information in this design guide and your spe-
cific application requirements to determine the correct seal and gland configuration. Start with the selection guide on page 2. Use the matrix to find the part number prefix for your seal. This includes the seal / gland type, seal length (where applicable) and lip style.
2. Go to the gland dimension tables on pages 8 -12 to deter-mine the correct dash size for your hardware.
3. Use the material matrix on page 6 to select the correct seal and spring materials.
4. Determine the spring load per the information on page 7. Example: Industrial Reciprocating Rod Seal, 2000 psi, on a 1.500” rod with a hardness of Rc 45. Part Number = TS10S-222-BM-36

SlantPitch™ Spring The SlantPitch spring is made from round wire stock, coiled and angled to a pitch that creates a compression spring in the radial direction. The result is a spring with a very flat load versus deflec-tion curve. Because of the consistent load the SlantPitch spring is well suited to dynamic applica-tions and where friction is critical. The SlantPitch is available in three different loads to correspond with the application. Moderate : Most applications dynamic and static. Light: Very low friction dynamic applications when some leakage is acceptable. High: Static or very slow dynamic Applications.
