GREENVILLE: PROJECT BEHIND SCHEDULE, FUNDING LOST
Securityissues delaybuildingMAGRIET THERON
@magrietron
The last stumbling block in the way offurther development of low-cost hous-ing outside Durbanville, seems to be a
hold-up with security. This comes after a restraining order was
issued by the Western Cape High Court inApril to prevent irateFisantekraal residentsfrom entering the construction site of theGreenville housing development.Building has been halted since then, but
could continue as soon as riot police couldbe mobilised to ensure the safety of the de-velopment team, says Thembi Sithole, project manager. She says they are merely awaiting a com-
mitment from the police andMetro Police tocontinue construction. “They [the police]need to engage thePublicOrder Police –whoare able to manage a crowd if necessary –and this takes time to organise,” Sithole saysabout the hold-up.
Protesters smashed vehicleGreenville construction workers and ben-
eficiaries faced crowds of up to 250 peoplewho protested against construction at thesite before the court order was issued.“They [protesters] smashed the vehicle of
the contractor and forced open a gate to gainaccess to the site,” Sithole says.“This resulted in a three-month standstill
– which is very frustrating,” she says.Sithole says the crowd, many of whom
were not housing beneficiaries, have beencontesting the urban densification of the ar-ea.“But the majority of the people are happy
about this development,” Sithole claims.
Construction will eventually deliver atown of 18 000 houses, which will be devel-oped in various phases. The first phasewill see 868 low-cost houses
constructed.Sithole says not only was the project de-
layed, but they also lost available funding.“Since it was the end of the financial year,
funds from the City have been re-allocated.We are dependent on the City and the availa-bility of funds,” she says. The project was scheduled to take three
years to complete. The developer, the Garden Cities Group,
brought anurgent application against six re-spondents following the violent disruptionof construction in April.
Dreams have been put on holdActingJudgeDerekWille thengranted the
order for interim relief restraining the re-spondents and others from interfering withthe building operation, or damaging alreadyconstructed buildings.CEO of the Garden Cities Group, John
Matthews, says in a statement: “On the re-turn date [to court] in August, the respon-dents and other interested parties will, ac-cording to the ruling, have to show reasonswhy a permanent order should not be grant-ed.“The respondents can choose to appoint
legal representatives to oppose thematter incourt on the return date,” he says.“The result has been that more than 2 500
people living in the informal settlement, aswell as backyard dwellers in Fisantekraal, havehad their dreamsput onhold ofmovinginto new homes,” Matthews says.

A woman working for a pizzeriain the Tygervalley Centrecaused a domino-style car pile-
up when she reversed into severalparked cars.
The woman spoke to TygerBurgeron the scene in the parking lot of thecentre on Monday, shortly after theaccident happened around 11:00.
“I was parked and had to reverse fora person to come out of their parkingbay. While I was reversing, I realisedthe car had no brakes – it would haveto stop on its own,” she said.
In this case, stopping on its ownmeant crashing into the three carswithin the trajectory of the reversingcar. These three cars in turn werepushed backwards and crashed intothe three cars behind them.
“I hurtmyneck, but luckily nothingelse,” the woman said. Sonia Smart isa manager at the pizzeria where thewoman works. “We’ve been standinghere for almost two hours and no po-lice or ambulance,” she said. “I haveto wait here to see what happens to
her.”The licence disc mounted on the in-
side of the windscreen of the woman’sgreen Audi, sporting Lesotho numberplates, had expired in 2013. This wasa fact pointed out by at least three ofthe six owners whose cars were in-volved in the incident.
Valerie Samuel from Goedemoed in
Durbanville was one of these people.“I was with my grandson. I had to
phone my daughter to come and pickhim up. Luckily we were not in thecar! “The woman said she tried brak-ing and her brakes failed. But I thinkshe had her foot on the accelerator in-stead,” Valerie said.
Theresa Cooper from Bellville was
of the sameopinion andadded shewasstill in shock. “At least I won’t haveto pay the [insurance] excess. I feel sosorry for the woman. She said to me:‘Thank you, your car stopped mycar’,” Theresa said. “I don’t knowwhether to laugh or cry.”
Cheryl Parks and Nadia Esterhuyz-en from Durbanville are colleaguesand were working at the centre onlyfor a part of the day. Cheryl said:“These are both our own vehicles. Acolleague came into the store [insidethe centre] and told me, ‘Cheryl, youneed to come and look if your car ispart of the pile-up outside. A womanjust knocked into six cars!’ I stillthought no, this won’t happen to me,”she said.TygerBurger confirmed the woman
had a licence disc expiring in Marchof 2016 in her possession. She said she“never got around to putting it ontothe windscreen”. The woman alsosaid the car did indeed belong to her-self. The centre management con-firmed theywould not be commentingon the incident.Besides thepain to thewoman’s neck, no-one elsewas hurt inthe incident.

The project took nine years ofplanning to reach the constructi-on stage, he says.In a statement at the time of the
disruptions, Matthews was repor-ted as saying: “Even if they [pro-testers] were in line for a houseand didn’t like what is being pro-vided, they have the right not toaccept a house in this develop-ment.“These homes are individual
properties built specifically forthe beneficiaries of a governmentsubsidy – nobody is being forcedto accept the houses at all.“But there are many who very
much want them.”
Matthews reiterated all princi-ples and criteria set out by bothnational government and the lo-cal authority were met in a priva-te/public partnership. His company then made the
land available for the project.According to Matthews, Green-
ville Garden Cities has been eng-aging with the elected representa-tives of the community for sometime.“We do understand, however
that one will not always be able tosatisfy everyone and there will bepeople who are unhappy for onereason or another,” Matthewssays.
“Garden Cities set the higheststandardswhen itwas establishednearly 100 years ago inCapeTownandhas been responsible for someof the most successful suburbs intheCity, formany thousands of ci-tizens across the economic spec-trum.“We take our responsibilities
seriously andGreenville is part ofour ongoing promise to providequality housing and infrastructu-re for the people of the Cape,” hesaid.Greenville Garden Cities has
sent all beneficiaries a letter up-dating them on the status of theproject, Matthews says.

Conflicting reports on an incident said to have taken place at the Tyger Manor parking lot, aredoing the rounds. PHOTO:MICHELLE LINNERT
‘Shooters’ at TygerManor Kwikspar?MICHELLE LINNERT
@linnertmb
Witnesses say police cornered threecriminals in the parking lot at Tyg-er Manor last Wednesday after a
chase up Durban Road. However, police say the incident was
nothing more than a common robbery inthe parking lot of the centre that went awry.
A somewhat bizarre tale ensues at thesame parking lot where a shoot-out tookplace in front of the Eastwoods nightclublast year. This time around, at least threepeople believed police caught three sus-pects in an armed robbery on Wednesdaymorning, and that the chase ended at TygerManor with their apprehension.
But Bellville police spokesperson, War-rant Officer Jacques Mostert, said the onlyevent listed for that parking lot, was onethat had happened on 27 June. In this inci-dent, a complainant was allegedly robbed ofa few hundred Rand. “The incident in ques-tion happened on 27 June, and not last
Wednesday (1 July),” Mostert confirmed.“In that case a complainant was robbed ofan undisclosed amount of money. Threerobbers hit the complainant over the headwith a firearm, took his money and fled.“One shot was fired through the wind-screen of the complainant’s car.” Mostertsaid no other similar crimes were reported.
However, Jandré Binneman, a trainee atthe resident KwikSpar, toldTygerBurgerhehad heard at least five shots going off.
“I was working behind the tills when weheard the sirens of the police vans outsidein the parking lot. We saw one guy runningand the police pulling up,” he said. “Weheard at least five shots being fired. It couldhave been more,” he said.
Manager of Yummy Zone restaurant, Ga-vin Huang, said he also heard shots. “Theincident happened last Wednesday around10:40,” he said. “I saw one of the men hada firearm. A police officer on the scene saidan armed robbery had taken place in Avon-dale Street and the police then chased thesuspects to Tyger Manor.”

‘Deaf or dead’ not the only optionsMICHELLE LINNERT
@linnertmb
A medical doctor from Stellenberg al-most went deaf from TB medicationafter contracting the dreaded multi-
drug resistant (MDR) strain of the disease. Now she is advocating for cheaper, safer
new antibiotics for TB treatment throughTB Proof, the NGO she now works for.
“I didn’t lose my hearing completely,” DrDalene von Delft told TygerBurger.
“The TB medication that causes hearingloss is anantibioticweuse to treatMDRTB,”she said.
This strain of the bacteria causes the samedisease as “regular” TB, but Dalene explainsit is resistant to first-line antibiotics becauseit has become mutated.
Dalene contracted MDR TB through herwork in 2010. Because the bacteria is air-borne, inhaling it causes the majority (up tothree quarters) of MDR cases in the country.
“We are currently using a very old regi-men of medication with a very old combina-tion of drugs for treating MDR TB,” she said.
Hearing loss a sideeffectThis usually consists of six or seven differ-
ent kinds of antibiotics – including a groupof antibiotics called the aminoglycosides –used to treat different types of bacterial in-fections.
“These antibiotics are widely used; theyare ‘old’ drugs which have been in use sincethe 1950s. It is still frequently used in hospi-tals, but for short periods, usually less thantwo weeks. In MDR TB one has to use it longterm,” she said.
The World Health Organisation’s (WHO)guidelines recommended treatment withaminoglycosides for MDR TB for eightmonths, with total treatment lasting up totwo years.
“Unfortunately one of the side-effects ishearing loss.”
Some of the antibiotics from the aminogly-coside class most frequently used in SouthAfrica are kanamycin and amikacin, Dalenesaid.
“Because these drugs are already 60 yearsold, their patents have long expired andthey’re very cheap and made by differentmanufacturers,” she said.
“Yes, it comes with a warning that it couldcause hearing loss, but it’s not like you cansue the drug company, because it is used ‘off-label’.
“This means the drug companies do notrecommend long term use of these drugs forthe treatment of MDR TB, but doctors areforced to use these drugs as there are no al-ternatives, and it is a deadly disease,” Da-lene said.
The WHO recommends regular screeningfor hearing loss by means of audiograms,”she said, explaining this meant hearing atdifferent frequencies and amplitudes.
“We don’t understand how it causes hear-ing loss, but it affects the nerve responsiblefor hearing – the cochlear nerve – and theouter hair cells which pick up high frequen-cy tones, are affected first,” she said.
“Low tones still sound okay for patients, but they start struggling with consonants ‘f’,‘s’, ‘k’, ‘p’, ‘t’. They might not pick up highsoprano notes.
“Sometimes people are unable to pick upif their high frequency hearing is deteriorat-ing. Some report ‘going deaf’ overnight.”
Studies estimate that about one third ofMDR patients lose their hearing, Dalenesaid. And there are no alternatives.
“You either become deaf or dead. In mostcases you cannot stop the old treatment eventhough you might lose your hearing.”
So when Dalene learnt these were her onlytwo choices, she tried to access a new drugbeing tested in South Africa.
“I didn’t want to accept that. If I becamedeaf, I wouldn’t be able to listen to music orconversations anymore; I wouldn’t be ableto practice as a doctor anymore,” she said.
She spoke topeoplewhohavehadcochlearimplants, Dalene said, one of them a nursewho contracted MDR TB and had the im-plant done, but still had trouble using astethoscope.
“I realised this was a career ending situa-tion. Week after week it just got worse. My
hearing deteriorated. Then I heard of a newdrug – the first new TB drug in 40 years,”she said.
Janssenpharmaceuticals (part of Johnson& Johnson) were doing clinical trials inCape Town on a drug called Bedaquiline, of-fering a slim chance of hope.
“Treatment of MDR TB has been at a deadend until recently.”
She found out about the new drug and con-tacted the principal investigator and tried toget the drug available on compassionate use.
“Sometimes they make new drugs availa-ble before the clinical trials are completed, seeing as these can take years and years. Italready took about 25 years to develop Be-daquiline.
“We are very lucky. So far small studies
suggest that this new drug is effective andthere’s a chance it might replace the olddrug,” she said.
“It was a gamble, but I applied to be a partof their programme. Luckily the drug com-pany and the Medicines Control Council ap-proved my participation. It ended up beingvery successful,” she said.
Advocating for new drugDalene only lost her high frequency hear-
ing and can still use a stethoscope.“I took it for six months and there were
no major side effects. So I started advocatingfor it. There are some concerns that the newdrug has an effect on the heart, but it seemsto be safe so far.
“They’ve opened the clinical access pro-gramme for the new drug. The drug has beenaround for about two years.
“This year our government decided the re-sults of the drug look so promising, althoughit still costs about R10 000 to R15 000 per pa-tient per six-month treatment, they are go-ing to make it available for certain patientsin the public sector,” she said.
Another new development – with a SouthAfrican technology partner – is the KUDUw-ave portable clinical audiometer.
“Now clinic sisters can readily test peo-ple’s hearing, because this machine is porta-ble,” Dalene said.
If a patient qualified to get the new drug, the cost would be about $900 for a six-monthcourse, Dalene said.
“Yes, it’s still a bit expensive, but how canyou put a price on hearing? One cochlear im-plant costs about R250,000,” she said.
The drug company recently donated 30 000treatments for MDR patients globally. Thedonation programme, led by USAID, willmake the drug available to patients from lowincome countries, Dalene said.
According to her the situation is lookinga bit better now in SA.
“Now we have portable audiometers andhave started screening patients. If hearingloss is picked up, they can apply to qualifyfor the new drug. There is hope on the hori-zon.”
Dr Dalene von Delft advocates for a new MDRTB drug that has shown its effectiveness inpatients like herself.

In the latest in the spate of armed robber-ies at shoppingmalls inCapeTown, threearmed robbers held up a family restau-
rant on Sunday night. The robbery at the Spur restaurant in the
CapeGate Shopping Centre took place afterclosing time at about 00:15, Warrant OfficerErica Crous, spokesperson at the Bracken-fell police station said.
“A mall cleaner spotted the three suspi-cious-lookingmen at the bottom of the esca-lator, but before he could get away to warnsecurity, they held him up,” Crous said.
According to Crous the robbers, with thecleaner in tow then proceeded to the restau-rant on the top floor of the mall.
“The doors were already closed, but the
robbers gained entry by jumping over theopen railing on the side of the shop.”
Inside, they ordered one of the threeman-agers to open the safe, while the other twomanagers and the cleaner were tied up inthe storeroom.
“No shots were fired and no-one was in-jured.”

Police are warning the public about a newscam targetting recipients of social grantsthat may be spreading across the WesternCape.
In Bishop Lavis and surrounding areasSAPS communications officer Captain Ma-rieLouwsays the fraudstershave identifiedaway inwhich to defraud receivers of Sassagrants in Bishop Lavis and surrounding ar-ea.
“A call is made by a person acting as ifhe/she is officially employedbySassa.Theyask to identify yourself and to confirm itand also to give the last four digits of yourSassa card number. The person is told theywill be receiving a food parcel after supply-ing the information. This clearly never hap-pens and the victim later finds that with-drawals have been made from the account.
People must be aware of this scam if theyare called or if they are visited by personspromising these hampers.”
ABonteheuwel residentwhodidnotwantto be named also pointed out that there wasalso a trend for these scamsters to visit peo-ple in various areas as well. “Mymother-in-law was approached by a young personclaiming to be a student working for Sassawho was armed with very official lookingdocuments,” he said.
His mother-in-law had left her card withhis wife and when she called them to bringit to her the man left saying that he wouldreturn later. It was later discovered he hadduped some residents into ‘filling’ out thoseforms for grocery hampers. They laterfound that illegal withdrawals were madefrom their accounts.

A new traffic calming policy, aimedat addressing a backlog of 500 pro-jects and protecting vulnerable pe-
destrians such as children on their wayto school, is being considered by the Cityof Cape Town.According to a statement, residents
are requested to air their views duringthe public participation process that iscurrently underway.City mayco member for transport,
Brett Herron explains each year they re-ceive more than 400 requests for the im-plementation of traffic calming meas-ures.There is currently abacklogof 500 traf-
fic calming projects to the value of R30million.
Increase in requestsCounting among these are requests for
speed humps, raised pedestrian cross-ings and intersections, mini-traffic cir-cles, roadmarkings and road narrowingas devices to force drivers to slow downon residential roads.“Over the past years, we have seen an
increase in the number of requests fortraffic calming measures, which can beattributed to the deterioration in driverdiscipline and a general disregard forthe rules of the road by all types of roaduser.“Given the current backlog and the
steady increase in requests, it has be-come necessary to revisit the current re-gime. As such, a new policy which seeksto prioritise the implementation of these
measureswhere pedestrians, andpartic-ularly children, are most vulnerable atschools, parks and libraries is now onthe table and ready for public comment.”He explains thepurpose of thenewpol-
icy is to provide for a system that is fi-nancially sustainable in the long-run; re-sponsive to critical safety problems onresidential roads; and that will assist ineliminating the backlogwithin a reason-able time.
Calming measures near schoolsPart of the new policy proposes that
the transport department implementtraffic calming measures on roads adja-cent to existing schools as amatter of pri-ority with the benchmark of at least 50schools per year.It also proposes that ward councillors
may identify, motivate and fund trafficcalming measures in response to a prov-en history of accidents on a road or inresponse to a recent and very urgent in-cident that demands immediate inter-vention.In addition the policymakes provision
for individuals or organisations may al-so fund traffic calming measures, sub-ject to the prescribed conditionsThe draft policy also lists various di-
rectives about where and how trafficcalmingmeasureswill and can be imple-mented.V Public participation on the new policy is Sunday 16 August and you can find the policy at yournearest subcouncil office or library. You can alsovisit www.capetown.gov.za.

Residents call for N7 footbridge
Concern over pedestrian deaths and accidents along the N7 is mounting following the death of apedestrian and a cyclist in the last two weeks. PHOTO: MONIQUE DUVAL
MONIQUE DUVAL@monique_duval
A footbridge between Dunoon and Rich-wood could curb pedestrian fatalitiesalong the N7.
This is one of many proposals the provin-cial transport department is considering, following a public meeting on the issue.According to a recent statement by the de-
partment, the portion of the N7 behind Du-noon has been declared a hot spot for pedes-trian fatalities. Low visibility due to mist, coupled with bad lighting, wet roads andspeeding motorists are a recipe for disaster. However, along this stretch of theN7 there
is an added risk as pedestrians run acrossthe busy highway as they make their wayto work in the morning. Each morning bak-kies and trucks can be seen parked in theemergency lane as men run across the roadto get to the vehicles.
Calls for pedestrian footbridgeIn the afternoon, young boys are seen run-
ning across the N7 as they make their wayto an open field situated between the two la-nes to play soccer. In a letter to TygerBurger, motorcyclist
Francois Geldenhuys, who travels along theN7 regularly, raised his concerns about pe-destrian safety after seeing a body coveredin a silver blanket on Tuesday 23 June.“The body was lying in the left lane of the
N7 right opposite Dunoon, in the directiontowards Cape Town. Paramedics and policewere already on the scene and had blockedoff the left lane. The bodywas completely co-vered with a silver blanket, blood was strea-ming fromunder theblanket. Not somethinganyone should ever have to see,” he writes.Geldenhuys said in October last year he
nearly became a statistic when a pedestrianran across the road into the back of his mo-
torbike causing it to swerve violently fromside to side. After two near misses along the N7, Gel-
denhuys has questioned when a pedestrianfootbridge will be constructed to reduce pe-destrian fatalities.“Howmuch bloodmust be spilt before our
government will erect a pedestrian bridgeover the N7?” he asks.On Thursday 2 July, Geldenhuys saw yet
another body covered with a silver blanket.According to a report fromBothasig police
the accident took place at about 06:55 closeto the Plattekloof Road off-ramp.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Jac-quesMostert says the cyclist, a security offi-cer working at Shoprite Bothasig, wasstruck by a vehicle as he tried to cross theN7 towards Dunoon.“He died on the scene as a result of the in-
juries sustained during the accident. A caseof culpable homicide has been opened andis currentlyunder investigationbyBothasigpolice,” he says.Police are also calling on witnesses to co-
me forward.According to the transport department,
between June and August last year 164 pe-
destrians died in the Western Cape.Department spokesperson Siphesihle Du-
be said of the 164 fatalities, three occurredalong the N7 near Dunoon. This included anincident involving a nine-year-old boy in Ju-ly. In August, two men aged 32 and 64 alsodied along this stretch of road.
Various interventions proposedDube explains the roadhas been identified
as a hot spot due to the high volume of pedes-trians crossing it daily.“Pedestrians cross the road to go to work.
They see it as the shortest route to their res-pective destinations. There is also a preva-lence of people being picked up on the sideof the N7 by motorists, whether they be em-ployers or otherwise.“Most of these pedestrians are not wea-
ring reflective clothing for motorists to beable to see them. This is an even bigger issueover the winter months when days are shor-ter and night time longer,” he says.Dube says the department will be clam-
ping down on vehicles parked in the emer-gency lanes. He said during a recent publicmeetingwith Richwood residents, a numberof interventions were proposed.“This includes the construction of a foot
bridge along the N7 as a possible long termintervention. There is an underpass at apoint along that road. Other short term in-terventions have included education andawareness activities, particularly at theschools, warning children about issues sur-rounding pedestrian safety.”
V Anyone with information about teh accident isasked to call Constable Godwin Oppel on021 558 3688 during office hours.V Are you concerned about pedestrian safety alongthe N7? What do you think the solution is? Send usa letter with your thoughts to briewe@tygerburger.co.za

There are now two shootingranges being used on a Satur-day, one on either side ofKlipheuwel Road (opposite eachother). From 08:00 till about 17:00
there are loud gun shotsringing out from both ranges. At the range on the left handside (leaving Durbanville) - theshooting point is above streetlevel and nothing has been putin place to absorb/deflect thenoise. Also, it is open on allsides! The sound of gun shotscarry and can be heard as faras Vierlanden (loudly). The opposite range does have
a berm - but clay pigeonshooting is now done out in theopen - also less than 100m fromthe road. Both shooting rangesare about 1.7 kilometres fromthe nearest homes in Graanen-dal.Who, in their right mind,

A Kuils River runs through it ...RICHARD ROBERTS
@richardjohn_rj
Ever wondered where the Kuils Riveroriginates, or perhaps where exactly itends up? Often wondered how long,
wide, dirty or clean it is?Well perhaps this is somethingCapeTown
photographer Dillon Marsh can shed somelight on.Marsh, a professional photographer, re-
cently took a series of photos capturing thedifferent parts of this meandering river –from Durbanville to where it eventuallyflows into the sea in False Bay.The photos, 16 in total, form part of the
photographer’s landmarks portfolio, enti-tled “A Matter of Course”.“From the source in the affluent suburb
of Durbanville, it passes through the starksuburb of Kuils River, to which it gives itsname. It then continues past the poor farm-ing communities of Blue Downs, the inform-al settlement of Khayelitsha and finally theperipheral suburb of Macassar where it ex-its into the Atlantic Ocean in False Bay,”Marsh describes the story of the river on hiswebsite.Asked what motivated him to undertake
the project, he commented: “I have oftendriven through the town of Kuils River, and
Cape Town photographer Dillon Marsh tookseveral photos of the meandering Kuils River, capturing many faces of the often tranquil, butalso polluted river.
the river itself has always intrigued me. Itis obviously a major feature of the town, butits banks have been fortified with concreteand people seem to avoid interacting withit.”Two years ago he decided he wanted to
find out more about the river.“So I followed it from its source to its
mouth. The fact that it passed through somany different settlements made for an in-teresting progression, and because it’s heav-ily polluted, the river also seemed to havethe character of an outcast,” explainedMarsh, who holds a Bachelor’s Degree inFine Art from the University of Stellen-bosch.The photo series was completed towards
the beginning of 2013.“I worked on it on and off, over a three-
month duration.” He did so by drivingaround the area near the river, finding pla-ces where the road came close enough to theriver or crossed over the river.“I did walk along the small sections of the
river, but I did not stray too far from mycar,” he added. One of the things, he ex-
plained, that struckhimmostwas the river’ssolitude. “It just seems to pass by withoutpeople really noticing it or interacting withit. This may of course be due to the fact thatit is quite polluted, but it paints a sad pic-ture,” he said.He added: “All I really want to draw atten-
tion to is the river that seems to have been
forgotten. I cannot realistically expect myphotos to enforce positive change to the pol-luted nature of the river, butmaybe they canhelp people becomemore aware of their nat-ural surrounding and treat their environ-ment with more care.”V To view the rest of the photos visit www.dillonmarsh.com/amatterofcourse

Origami unlocks teens’ creativityKyoko Morgan, founder and director of Origami for Africa. PHOTOS: RICHARD ROBERTS
RICHARD ROBERTS@richardjohn_rj
The art of skilfully folding pieces of pa-per into all sorts of ornaments, isslowly but surely beginning to take
shape in Wesbank. This practice, thanks to the generous
help and coaching of one woman, KyokoMorgan, is aimed at building the alreadycreative minds of local teenagers.
Helps to empower childrenKyoko, a Japanese national who moved
to South Africa 23 years ago, has beenteaching youngsters in the crime riddenarea for over three years to fold papers aspart of her origami class. It is here, as partof a school holiday programme, where theyare taught how to fold paper into books, wallets or swans.
Origami, from ‘ori’ meaning folding, and‘kami’ meaning paper, is the art of paperfolding which is often associated with theJapanese culture, according to the onlineencyclopaedia, Wikipedia.Kyoko, founder and director of Origami
for Africa, started teaching children at theWesbank No 1 Primary School as part ofaholidayprogramme.Theprogrammewassoon expanded and now offers free classesto more teenagers at the Multi-purposeCentre during school holidays.“I used to do origami as a child and as
you grow up you do not forget. It is like agame for children in Japan.“I was asked to do it at schools and also
did it with the awaiting trial youths atPollsmoor Prison,” Kyoko said.Apart from this, she also taught children
displaced as a result of the recent xenopho-bic attacks.
“From their reaction I then realised thatorigami actually helps empower children, giving them confidence.“I never thought of it before, but realised
that for some children here it is interest-ing, they find it magical and it is also heal-ing.“It is a great activity people can do either
by themselves or socially,” Kyoko said.
Teaches disciplineHer aim now is to bring origami to town-
ships and underprivileged communitieslike Wesbank.“It is good for all, it helps you physically,
mentally and intellectually,” Kyoko said. The activity, she explains, though not as
action packed at ball games, appeal to bothboys and girls.“Their reactions vary.”Her aim is to train children locally who
can in turn teach others.Ayanda Mpikwa (14) from Leiden High
School in Delft, is one of those students.“I have been doing it for about four years
now. When I started I did not really under-stand origami. When I am down and feelstressed, I take a piece of paper and fold it,it relaxes you,” Ayanda said.He said over the years origami has
taught him to concentrate and pay close at-tention to many other aspects of his life.“It also help to discipline us,” he added.Kyoko said: “Some shapeshave six steps,
others have 600 steps. There is slow pro-gression, and that is what I think makes itso exciting.”A group of Wesbank teenagers will be
showing off some of their origami skills tomembers of the public at the IzikoMuseumin Cape Town this week.V Contact Kyoko on [email protected]

the empire built by James Logan after he de-veloped Matjiesfontein into a renownedhealth resort attracting the rich and famousof the late 19th century.
Logan is said to have made his fortunethrough business, politics and a high profileassociation with the Empire’s favouritesport – cricket.Allen will explain how Logan developed
the game of cricket in South Africa and exa-mine the controversial, but little-known 1901South African cricket tour to England – aventure funded by Logan himself in themidst of the Anglo-Boer War.The pivotal role of Matjiesfontein in the

er at the launch of Leadership for All byMa-rius Ungerer, Hohan Herholdt and Janniele Roux.Rowland is honorary president of the
South African National Council for theBlind.According to Rowland only about 5% of
the country’s blind population was able toread braille, even though braille is largelyconsidered themain form of literacy for thesight impaired.“I have read lots of academic books in
braille, but never a business book,” Row-land said.“This being the age ofmotivationand self-
improvement it is right and applicable thatthis particular book on leadership is mademore accessible.”He said the challenge with braille is the
surprisingly limitednumberof blindpeoplein South Africa who are able to read it.Rowland said this was the reason it was
equally important that books are madeavailable in audio version, or “text-to-speech”.“Braille is our form of literacy,” he said.“This book extends leadership to blind
people as well, leaving no one behind. Thisis what the launch is all about – it is a cele-bration of opening doors.”This is the first ever translation into
braille of a book by a USB academic. It came as the result of an initiative by
USB Management Coaching student Carin-na Krantz.Last year Krantz worked with visually
impaired business leaders for the practicalpart of her Master’s degree in ManagementCoaching. This iswhen she realised the critical need
for management and leadership literatureto bemade accessible to the blind communi-ty.Ungerer, co-author of the book and a USB

but like somanymusicians on the Cape Flatsit started in the church, leading to ChristmasBands, and eventually touring the world.“When I was still in school I never in amil-
lion years thought that this would be mybread and butter,” he says thinking back tohis beginnings.Joining Abdullah Ibrahim’s jazz pro-

these musicians but one of the highlights ofmy career and travels was when I got the op-portunity to perform with Jonathan Butlerin Kenya, Nigeria, Cape Town and Johannes-burg. Also recording with Kirk Whalum onhis latest Gospel According To Jazz Chapter4 with bassist Jonathan Roubain was a phe-nomenal experience.”With his show at the Baxter he is inviting
audiences to discover that journey into mu-sic.“This show has also kind of forced me to
dig a bit deeper into my heritage to find outexactly where I come from and the impact ithad on where I am now.”In more recent years Donveno has shifted
into the chair of musical director for produc-

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), would like to provide communities with the
following information regarding social grant deductions:
The SASSA branded payment card, was introduced to allow social grant beneficiaries the convenience of
accessing their social grant anywhere and at any time. The SASSA payment card is a debit card and
allows for cash to be withdrawn from ATM's, purchases to be made from suppliers and legal deductions to
be made. The introduction of the SASSA payment card into the banking system unfortunately also
provided an opportunity for social grant beneficiaries to be exploited through unauthorized deductions.
Before the social grant is paid into the bank account of a beneficiary only deduction is allowed to be
made for a funeral policy, which may not exceed 10% of the total value of the social grant. This premium is
deducted by SASSA before the social grant is paid to the beneficiary and then paid over to the relevant
insurance company.
Once the social grant is paid into the bank account that is linked to the SASSA debit card, legal deductions
instituted by financial entities will take effect for purchases that were made ie: airtime, electricity, micro-
loans, credit instalments, policy premiums etc. Any disputes should be resolved directly between the social
grant beneficiary and the entity that instituted the deduction.
Social grant beneficiaries are requested to report any illegal deductions to the nearest SASSA
office/service point where they will be assisted to complete a claim form so that the matters can be
investigated. Alternatively beneficiaries can contact the SASSA call centre @ where
SASSA staff will record the relevant details and refer the matter for investigation. Where beneficiaries have
not authorized deductions or for their SASSA cards/account details to be used by others, the deducted
amounts will be paid back to them. This is usually done within a period of 3 working days. Should any
social grant beneficiary not receive the required assistance from a SASSA office or staff member this must
be reported to the office manager or the
• Do not to respond to SMS messages offering airtime, electricity and other services. By responding
to these messages, beneficiaries are actually taking on a "subscription" service and the amounts
will be deducted off the bank account through the EFT debit system every month.
• Do not use your SASSA payment card as security for loans and to purchase any financial services
products.
• Do not authorize deductions to be made against your card except for the one funeral policy
deduction that should not exceed 10% of the social grant value.X1Q9Q24H-AL080715

FEEDBACK RECEIVED FROM THE
SELLER
68 SUIKERBEKKIE STREET
After seeing Mimi’s “FOR SALE” signs aroundJoostenbergvlakte for many years we decided togive her a call so we could meet her and ask for a
valuation. Mimi is warm, friendly and caring“people Person”.
Her valuation was spot on with what we had inmind and we signed a sole mandate with Mimi.
Our property was sold within a week at a verymarket related price. At all times Mimi was very
professional and kept us up to date.
The buyers were clearly vetted and we did nothave loads of people passing through our house.
I would recommend Mimi to anyone in the blink ofan eye!!

others in need.Kat, as he is known tohis friendswas iden-

left-over pocket money from his trip over-seas to buy soccer boots and shin guards foran underprivileged deaf soccer team, thePhillipi Deaf Stars. This gesture was so well received that the
schoolboy swiftly launched a non-profit or-ganisation designed to assist township chil-dren with a passion for sports to receive therequisite equipment. The NPO, Katleho’s Give2Talent, also
knownasKG2T, has as its primary objectivethe donation of sports equipment to teamsand individuals from previously disadvan-taged areas. cricket, where in conjunction with DistrictNorth Cricket and the Peninsula CricketAcademy in Bellville, he has embarked ona drive to collect second-hand, unwanted orunused cricket equipment for re-distribu-tion to under-privileged schools.ThisGive2Talent cricket initiative, which

Ek is baie trotsop my prestasie vroeër vanjaar in Johan-nesburg toe ekmy land verteenwoordig het
Droom“My grooste droom wat ek baie
