VALUES & NEGATIVE SPACE
VALUE-different shades of grey between white and black.
-creates form with light and shadows.-Tone is when GREY is added to color
-color has value
Valuescale:a grey scale with a developed range
of values from 0 (black) to 10 (white) *for our
purposes
All Value transitions should be handled either
as a soft edge or a hard edge.
NEGATIVE SPACE-empty space around an object or form; also called white
space-important to utilize for accuracy of positive space
-should be explored as a design element and compositional tool
KEYHigh Key-using values towards the upper range on the
scaleLow Key-using values towards the lower range on the scale
Contrast-Comparison of strong unlike qualities such as value, size, etc to create emphasis or focal points
DESIGN PROJECT:-Draw negative spaces surrounding a figure in action.
-Once negative shapes are identified, divide the image into equal thirds (can also add additional divisions for design)
-Using pencil, shade each area as : high key values, low key values, and a range of all values.
