2) In your notes create a bubble map on the French Revolution
3) You need at least 15 events of the French Revolution & we will add some together as a class
The French Revolution I. In July 14, 1789 French citizens
began their own revolution to get rid of their own monarchy
II. French citizens decapitated Louis XVI and launched a reign of terror.
III. Radical revolution that focused on taking power from a wealthy monarchy and giving it to the middle class.
IV. French would become a democracy!!
V. French Revolutionaries would declare a war against all monarchies including Great Britain!
The French Revolution I. The USA was split on how to feel
about this Revolution
II. D-Rs: happy/excited A. Saw it as an extension of the
American Revolution
B. Revolution of the people against a King
III. Federalists: worried A. Saw mass hysteria and mob
violence as a threat to themselves

The Problem for the U.S. I. The majority of Americans supported the French
Revolution at the beginning. A. The French helped the USA in our Revolution B. We should be excited they are following our lead
II. In 1793 France declared war on Great Britain A. G.B. is USA’s number 1 trading partner
III. U.S. still is required to help France because of the the Franco-American Alliance of 1778
IV. D-Rs favored honoring the alliance (they helped us)
V. Federalists supported Britain (stronger trade with G.B.)
Washington’s Proclamation of Neutrality (1793)
I. Washington believed the country is not militarily prepared to fight another war
II. Washington issued the Proclamation of Neutrality saying the U.S. would not choose sides, but would stay out of it
A. Wanted a friendly relationship with both France & Great Britain
III. U.S. still traded with both sides à but angered both France & Great Britain in the process
Jay’s Treaty (1794) I. By 1794 Britain still had not left some forts in
Northwest Territory & attacking U.S. ships in the Caribbean
A. G.B. is trying to stop the U.S.A. from trading with France
II. John Jay sent to London to create a treaty to ease tensions
III. The USA and Great Britain agreed to Jay’s Treaty in 1794:
A. British agreed to pay for seized ships, abandon frontier forts but US could not trade in the Caribbean
B. American agreed to pay pre-revolutionary war debts to British merchants
IV. Not incredibly helpful; but did prevent war with Great Britain
Problems With Spain
I. During Washington’s presidency the Spanish had closed the valuable port of New Orleans to Americans due to border disputes in 1784
A. The port of New Orleans controls the Mississippi River à important trading route through the U.S.A.
II. Pinckney’s Treaty A. US Ambassador Thomas Pinckney was sent to Spain
to negotiate a treaty
Pinckney’s Treaty (1795) I. The United States needed to secure
land west of the Appalachian Mountains.
II. Thomas Pinckney negotiated deal with the Spanish
III. Pinckney’s Terms: A. Spain gave up all land east of the
Mississippi River (except Florida)
B. Established a boundary between the U.S. & Spanish Florida
C. Allowed the U.S. free navigation rights of the Mississippi River
D. Allowed the U.S. the use of the port of New Orleans
Washington’s Farewell Address
I. Washington chose to step down after two terms in office (1789-1797)
A. Washington served as POTUS for 8 years
B. Felt like he had done his duty and wanted to let others take charge
C. Wanted to make sure no one man ever had too much power as President
D. His farewell address is his most famous speech

II. 2 important ideas included:
A. End Political Partisanship – there should be NO political parties à should not divide ourselves
