SUBJECT: Risk estimates assuming residential BATE: 1 August 1990future use scenario at Cokers Site
FROM: Roy I. Smith, Ph.D,Toxicologist (3HW15)
TO: Lesley BrunkerDE/HD Section (3HW25)
The risk calculations you requested are attached. Theseestimates assume future residential use of both landfills, underthe following conditions:
• Buried waste is disturbed during construction, and leftexposed in yards where future residents contact it daily.Contaminant concentrations in residential soil are assumedequal to the maximum observed in the waste.
• Residents obtain potable water from shallow wells installed/directly through the landfills, Contaminant concentrations in-'vtap water are assumed to be the maximum observed in leachate,
• Adults Heigh 70 kg; children (ages 2-6) weigh 17 kg.
• Exposure to carcinogens is assumed for 30 years of a 70-yearlifetime for adults, and for 5 years (ages 2-6 inclusive) of a70-year lifetime for children.
• Exposure to non-carcinogens is averaged only over the exposureperiod, and not over a 70-year lifetime either for adults orchildren,
The risk estimates consider the following routes ofexposure: (1) ingestlon of drinking water, (2) inhalation ofVOCs volatilized during bathing or showering, (3) dermal contactwith VOCs during bathing, (4) ingestion of residential soil, and(5) dermal contact with residential soil. More details aboutthe exposure scenarios are provided with each table of results.
Obviously, the assumptions regarding soil and tap waterconcentrations are extremely conservative, and should be consi-dered a worst case rather than a reasonable maximum. However, the RI data do not support any more realistic future residentialEcenarioe. Let me know if I can provide any other assistancewith thin site.
