Formula Student has provided the team with experience of the complete design process. As the leader for the current season, I have the task of managing a group of 30 engineering students with the aim
of producing a successful race car in time for the annual competition at Silverstone.
Last year’s design was the most ambitious to date, with an emphasis placed on integrating a stable aerodynamics package and the implementation of advanced composite materials to produce the bodywork. As a result the team produced one of the most aesthetically pleasing cars at Silverstone and were subsequently nominated for the ‘Outstanding Style Award’ at Formula Student Germany. The team looks to continue the progress this year designing the new car to be the best yet.
The role of sponsors is vital, the project simply wouldn’t
be able to run without help. The team relies on the
provision of funds, materials, manufacturing and expert
advice in order to be successful. Effort would be for
nothing without this very valuable support.

INTRODUCTION
Formula Student is Europe’s biggest educational motorsport event. It challenges student engineers to innovate, design, build and compete as a team with their own single seat racing car. The annual event is run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and was first held in the UK in 1998. The competition aims to inspire and develop enterprising and innovative young engineers, by promoting the skills required in industry; creativity and technical ability; teamwork and communication; logistics and the ability to manage budgets and time. The competition starts at the beginning of the university year when teams start to design their cars. They are to assume that a manufacturing firm has commissioned them to produce a prototype car for the non-professional autocross or sprint racer sales market with the intention of selling 1000 units per year. The team’s hard work culminates in July at the annual event, which has been held at the famous Silverstone
Racing Circuit since 2007. It’s here that the teams demonstrate to the judges through a series of events, that
their car is fit for purpose, as well as presenting a business plan that sells their concept to potential investors.

ULM001 2005-2006The first car to be produced by the
students. It has a steel space frame and a 4
cylinder Triumph motorcycle engine. Now
retired this historic machine has been put
to rest in the university archives. This car
sported a blue livery to reflect the colour
of the University Crest.
ULM002 2006-2007 The first use of an ambitious aluminium
monocoque design and an Aprilia engine.
This significantly reduced the weight of the
car in comparison to ULM001. In 2006/07
the decision was taken to produce cars to
match the School of Engineering’s
graduation colours.
ULM003 2007-2008 Featured a shorter more compact
monocoque chassis aiding acceleration
and manoeuvrability. The reduced wheel
size from 13 to 10 inch improved
suspension dynamics. The car performed
well but didn’t finish the final endurance
test.
ULM004 2008-2009 Saw the most developed iteration of the
monocoque chassis design. ULM004 was
the lightest car ever produced, weighing
significantly less than the 200kg limit set
by the 2008/09 team. Overcoming
adversity, the car completed the entire
endurance event.
ULM005 2009-2010 Marked a shift in the design vision of the
ULM cars, returning to a steel space frame
chassis. ULM005 aimed to be simple, low
cost and reliable. This focused design
vision resulted in a highly developed car
while still reflecting times of economic
austerity.
ULM006 2010-2011 Continued the design vision of ULM005,
once more using a steel space frame
chassis. ULM006 aimed to develop and
build upon the simplicity, low cost and
reliability of ULM005. 10 inch wheels
minimized the unsprung mass and
improved its handling and acceleration.
ULM007 2011-2012 Featured a high strength, light weight, low
cost steel space frame construction with
user-adjustable suspension geometry. The
car had high manoeuvrability and
responsive handling achieved through high
track/wheelbase ratio. Having successfully
completed all events, ULM007 was the
best car to date finishing 4th out of the UK
universities.
ULM008 2012-2013 The first of our cars to introduce carbon
fibre bodywork, which has been used as a
template ever since. The Aprilia was up-
graded to a race prepared Yamaha R6, a
more reliable engine with a higher power
output. In addition, this team also focused
on driver integration by including a be-
spoke seat placing the driver in a more
comfortable, reclined racing position.
ULM009 2013-2014 The first car to consider full aerodynamics,
including initial design work done on the
integration of wings, the bodywork
produced through the use of CFD analysis
and an undertray designed to reduce drag.
The car also included a revolutionary
removable rear sub-frame on the chassis
for easy engine maintenance.

ULM010 is our latest car and most ambitious build to date. It features: lightweight magnesium rims, upgraded data acquisition
equipment (including a CompactDAQ unit provided by National Instruments), a state of the art Pectel SQ6 ECU provided by Cosworth, a
full aero package including stable front and rear wings and an innovative triple diffuser undertray. The bodywork of the car has also
attracted a lot of attention from around the formula student community with ULM010 being nominated for the ‘Style Award’ at Formula
Student Germany.

As Formula Student aims to develop well rounded engineers, each team is assessed not only on their car’s performance and their understanding of the engineering behind their design, but on their overall business proposal. This is done in a series of static and dynamic events.
DESIGN 150 POINTS
Students must be able to explain how and why the different materials, components, and systems have been chosen and assembled, and how their design meets the needs of the intended market. The car must illustrate the best use of engineering to meet design goals, while the whole team must show a full understanding of the design.
COST 100 POINTS
Here teams provide an accurate estimate of the cost of their car in a limited production. They should be able to show the judges where they’ve spent the money and added value.
BUSINESS 75 POINTS
In this event, each team has to present a business case that sells their concept. They must identify the Key features of the car, the design process, the manufacturing feasibility, and a business proposal.
FUEL ECON 100 POINTS
Due to the rise in fuel prices, and the reduction of fossil fuels, potential customers will expect their car to be as green and fuel efficient as possible. To avoid penalties cars must achieve a corrected mileage of 26 litres per 100km during the endurance trial.

ACCELERATION 75 POINTS
This event focuses on the car’s engine performance and
drivability As well as the suspension’s ability to provide
maximum tyre grip. Each car’s acceleration is measured
as the total time it takes to travel down Silverstone’s pit
straight from a standing start.
SKIDPAD 50 POINTS
In motorsport straight line speed isn’t everything so the
skid pad lets teams show how well their car corners. Cars
need to have good lateral grip to complete a figure of
eight in the quickest possible time.
SPRINT 150 POINTS
This tests the car’s manoeuvrability and handling
qualities on a tight 800m course. To do well, cars have to
be quick as well as nimble around the corners.
ENDURANCE 300 POINTS
The biggest test of the teams is the 22km endurance race
where cars have to prove their durability. There is also a
mandatory stop, driver change and hot restart that really
tests reliability and the team’s ability to efficiently make
changes to pedal positions, seats etc.

Each year the team has competed at Formula Student UK held at the prestigious Silverstone circuit.
This year FSUK celebrated its 18th year. Over 2000 students from 28 countries attended the event in
July.
Upon arrival to Silverstone, the car immediately caught the attention of other teams as well as the
FSUK sponsors. Its bright blue metallic paintwork caught the sunlight and its elegant design meant
people couldn’t help but stop and admire the bodywork. ULM010 was hands down the best looking
car in the pits (if the team doesn’t say so themselves)!

In recent years, the team has chosen to participate in an international event in addition to FSUK. This year the choice was to attend Formula Student Germany (FSG) at the Hockenheimring. On the 27th July, the journey began by setting off from Liverpool to start the 1400 mile trip to Hockenheim, Germany. Upon arrival it was clear that competition would be fierce. A total of 110 teams were competing in
the event including the elite from around the world. This was unlike anything experienced before, a
new challenge that was exciting to take on.
