The Word and Will of God Logan Edmison When Jesus was tempted in the Wilderness, He responded three times to the devil using the book of Deuteronomy. He had the entire Old Testament to draw from but He could single handedly ward off every temptation with only one book. A preacher once asked the question, “What if your response to temptation was solely based on your knowledge of the book of Deuteronomy? How would you do?”
At the beginning of the book of Deuteronomy, Moses recounts the journey that the Israelites had made thus far. God says, “Then I commanded your judges at that time, saying, ‘Hear the cases between your brethren, and judge righteously between a man and his brother or the stranger who is with him… you shall not be afraid in any man’s presence, for the judgment God’s’” (Deuteronomy 1:16-17). What I love so much about this passage is the courage that God wants His people to have in enforcing His word. He is telling them that if they enforce His word, then when they make a decision according to His word, it is not really their decision at all. The decision we make is God’s when it is from His word. Obviously, the passage is in the context of resolving conflict, but the principle seems potentially much broader in application.
When Jesus responded to the Devil using the word of God, Jesus was making a decision. Whose decision was it? Well it was Jesus’ decision. But because He was making His decision according to God’s word, it was God’s decision. Thus, when Jesus acted according to God’s word, He acted according to God’s will. The evidence of this point is conveniently summed up in the phrase, “As it is written…” Now consider what Jesus says, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). We can know God’s will by knowing His word. “Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:17). Consider when Jesus said, “I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me” (John 5:30).
“He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked” (1 John 2:6). Jesus’ decisions were God’s decisions. When you and I make decisions, are they also according to the will and word of God?

DUST TO DUST
“Come you who are blessed by my Father,
take your inheritance, the kingdom pre-
pared for you since the creation of the
world.” Matt. 25:34
A young boy impressed by his Bible School lesson
from Genesis that man had come from dust and
would return to dust, called his mother to his room
to view the upswept floor under his bed. He said
to her, “I don’t know if he’s coming or going, but
there’s someone hiding under there.”
We sometimes forget that we are essentially a
composite of dust. In moments, we live as if we
would live forever and forget that our return to
dust is inevitable. Ecclesiastes 3 tells us there’s “…
a time to be born and a time to die.” (Eccl 3:2). But
dying does not have to be a moment to dread. We
are told in Ecclesiastes 12 “Remember your creator
in the days of your youth…” With the proper
preparations, focus and perspective, the moment
of departure from this life in reality is the door
through which we go to receiver eternal blessings.
C. S. Lewis observed, “If I find in myself a desire
which no experience in this world can satisfy, the
most probable explanation is that I was made for
another world.”
May we mature in Christ so that our desires have
no worldly satisfaction.
