URDU (URDU)URDU 401 Beginning Urdu-Hindi, Part IThis introductory course core proficiency in Hindi-Urdu up to theintermediate level. It is designed for students with little or no priorexposure to Hindi or Urdu. The course covers all four language skills(speaking, lsitening, reading, and writing) and all three models ofcommunication (interpersonal, presentational, interpretive). Students willdevelop literacy skills in the primary script of their choice (Hindi or Urduscript). All written materials will be provided in both scripts. All meetingsare interactive and students acquire the language by using it in realisticcontexts. URDU 421 Intermediate Urdu Part IThis course allows students to continue improving their Urdu proficiencywhile also gaining a broad foundational understanding of Urdu societyand culture throughout South Asia. The course provides students thetols needed to handle a variety of authentic written and spoken Urdusources including film, music, media reports, folk tales, and simpleliterature. Student will also continue to increase their speaking andwriting proficiency to be able to discuss a broad range of concrete, real-world topics. The course is designed for students with one year previousUrdu or Hindi study or the equivalent proficiency. URDU 422 Intermediate Urdu Part IIThis continuing second-year course allows students to continueimproving their Urdu proficiency while also gaining a broad foundationalunderstanding of Urdu society and culture throughout South Asia.The course provides students the tools needed to handle a variety ofauthentic written and spoken Urdu sources including film, music, mediareports, folk tales, and simple literature. Students will also continue toincrease their speaking and writing proficiency to be able to discuss abroad range of concrete, real-world topics. URDU 431 Advanced Urdu: Language and LiteratureThis course is designed to give in-depth exposure to some of the finestworks of classical and modern Urdu prose and poetry along with thehistorical and socio-political trends they represent. Figures covered rangefrom Ghalib (b.1797) to Faiz, Fehmida Riaz, and post 9/11 Urdu proseand poetry. The course is open to both undergraduates and graduatestudents, subject to having intermediate level proficiency. The course isrepeatable, and hte content changes every semester. Multi-media contentsuch as music, videos, blogs etc. will be actively incorporated. Everyeffort will be made to accommidate individual interests.
