But how do you “listen” to what your equipment can tell you?
The Cat VIMS™ System gives your equipment its own voice. The Cat VIMS™ System enables your mining equipment to provide you withup-to-the-minute information about its own health and the working conditions aroundit. The key to letting you “listen” to this information is an integrated combination o ftwo systems:
The VIMS On-Board System -This hardware-based system captures machine data, delivers instant feedback to theoperator and makes vital machine-generated data available for download.
The VIMS Off-Board System -Primarily a software solution, this system helps you drill into the information, glean the relevant facts and make well-informed maintenance, operations andmanagement decisions.

The electronic sensors and control systems on your Cat® equipment generate a
wide range of data while you work—temperature readings, engine rpm, hydraulic
pressures, ground speed, filter status—hundreds of signals every hour of every shift.
In fact, today’s Cat equipment generates huge volumes of data that can help you:
• Monitor machine health and condition
• Track equipment hours and usage
• Optimize work flows and production cycles
• Maximize equipment uptime
• Reduce costs per ton
With all this data available, your Cat equipment can tell you a lot about its own
performance and health.

Message Center and KeypadThe operator receives instant feedback from the VIMS On-Board System through thein-cab Message Center Module. This information helps the operator better assess thecondition of the machine and adjust his or her operating practices accordingly.
The On-Board System comes as standard on a range of Cat haul trucks, loading tools andother equipment (see back of brochure).
VIMS System Main ModuleThe Main Module is the heart of theVIMS On-Board System. It acquiresdata from the ECMs and sensors, storesit away and compares it againstpreprogrammed specifications and limits.
Capturing Data
The VIMS™ On-Board System includes a central data recorder networked with
the machine’s Electronic Control Modules (ECMs) and an array of sensors that
monitor the machine. It also offers downloading interfaces and a port for wireless
transmissions. Recorded data can be downloaded in the shop or field or transmitted
wirelessly to an Off-Board System.

The Message Center Module provides three types of alert messages:
Category 1 - No immediate action is required, but the condition should be addressed bythe end of the shift.
Category 2 -Th e operator is instructed to change operating procedures or to havemaintenance performed immediately. If no action is taken, machinecomponents could be damaged.
Category 3 - The operator must perform an engine shutdown as soon as safely possible. If no action is taken, components could be severely damaged, and evenpossible operator injury could occur.
This VIMS System in-cab interface also includes a keypad that lets the operatoracknowledge an alert and “talk back” to the system as required.

The VIMS Off-Board System helps you categorize and evaluate data so you can efficientlymanage machine health, performance and productivity. Two available applications allowyou to choose the right software for your needs:
VIMSpc is the standard, single-machine download and analysis software solutionavailable for all machines equipped with the VIMS System.
VIMS Supervisor provides custom fleet production and maintenance reports. Its user-friendly architecture can filter and sort Event, Payload and Trends data to createdynamic reports for operations improvements, fleet management and more.
These applications provide service personnel with a broad overview of operator andmachine performance—including a history of past and potential problems. They arealso valuable in helping production managers diagnose operational bottlenecks and otherproductivity issues.
Event ListThe Event List records up to 500 “events” that occur during machine operation. An event is defined as any measurement that falls outside of predetermined limits.
The Event List puts each event into context, identifying when it occurred, how long itlasted, which component or system was affected, which operator was involved andwhether it prompted a Category 1, 2 or 3 alert. This is “bread-and-butter” data for yourmaintenance and service operations.

includes a number of specialized features aimed at specific operational and
management issues.

Managing Operations
H a u l T r u c k S p e e d M a n a g e m e n t T o o l s
MAX Payload Speed ManagerOverloaded haul trucks cause all kinds of safety and operational problems—fromreduced tire and brake life to lower fuel economy and excessive haul road wear. Theuser-configurable VIMS MAX Payload Speed Manager helps alleviate these issues byautomatically limiting travel speeds when haul trucks are overloaded.
The VIMS System manages two features for limiting travel speeds on Cat Haul
Trucks: MAX Payload Speed Manager and TKPH Monitor.
Meeting 10/10/20 GuidelinesUsing the VIMS second-gear reweigh function—which recalculates the weight of thepayload for greater accuracy as the truck shifts into second gear—the MAX PayloadSpeed Manager encourages operators to manage their truck’s payloads to meet the Cat10/10/20 guidelines. (The 10/10/20 guidelines state that no more than 10% of allpayloads may be 10% over the truck’s rated capacity, and no loads should exceed 20%over capacity.)
When the VIMS System determines the machine is overloaded, the transmission shiftrange is limited, the engine speed is reduced to control truck ground speed and theoperator is instructed to dump the load safely. After the payload has been dumped, themachine returns to normal operation.
TKPH MonitorThe VIMS TKPH feature monitors loads and manages speeds to help operators reduce therisk of tire damage or failure from overheating.
TKPH is a measurement tire manufacturers use to rate a tire’s ability to carry a load overa period of time. If the TKPH value for a particular tire is exceeded, the tire will overheatand may eventually fail.
Real-Time TKPH ValuesDuring truck operation, the VIMS System calculates a real-time TKPH value based onload, speed, ambient temperatures and distance travelled. If the preprogrammed TKPHvalue is exceeded, the VIMS On-Board System will display a warning on the in-cab dis-play instructing the operator to reduce speed.
If the TKPH value is exceeded for 10 minutes, the truck will be automatically limited to aconfigurable top speed that allows the tires to cool down. When the tires return to asafe operating TKPH, the speed limiter will disengage and allow the truck to resume itsnormal maximum speed.

For more than a decade, the Cat VIMS™ System has proven itself in miningoperations around the world. These are just a few examples of the value it hasdelivered for Cat customers like you.
The VIMS System RemembersA new operator ran up on a berm, lost control of his truck and rolled it on to itsside. After the operator was safely removed from the cab, the companyretrieved the data from the Event Recorder.
When the data “snapshot” was reviewed, it indicated no major damage toengine components due to oil starvation. A technician verified the diagnosis byremoving the oil pan and examining one key bearing. The truck went back towork immediately.
Without the VIMS System data, the only way to find out the machine’s truecondition would have been to disassemble, inspect and reassemble the entireengine, a process that would have taken the truck out of production forseveral days.
