Welcome to the 27th Annual Celebration of Life Virtual Event 2021
We are so grateful to have the opportunity to co-chair this 1st virtual informational event. With all of the uncertainties that evolved from the pandemic in 2020 we felt it was important to help alleviate some of the fears people have concerns about.
The longer we are involved with the American Cancer Society, the more lives we see affected by this devastating disease. One of our concerns is seeing more people being diagnosed with late stages of cancer because under the pandemic conditions people are afraid to go to the doctor. The American Cancer Society is hoping to lesson those fears by sharing today’s important resources.
We want to thank all of the many sponsors and donors who give so generously year after year. With your support you are helping minimize the effects of this disease by attacking cancer from every angle.
We are dearly missing our models this year however we are diligently working to raise awareness and funds in the Memory of Shirley Lavorato. She was one of 3 ladies who had a vision that has lasted 27 years. Shirley had a gift for raising money for this great cause and she is missed very much.
We want to thank all of the people who have taken the time to be a special part of this event and share their personal stories with us. These stories are an important part of giving newly diagnosed patients Hope!
We thank Nancy Valdaz and the staff of the American Cancer Society for all of their hard work in making this new way of sharing important information come to fruition.
A very special thank you to Karina Rusk for her interviewing skills, and for helping make everyone comfortable in front of the camera.
A huge thank you to MagOne for their professionalism and expertise making today a success.
Once again thank you all for your continued kindness and support over the past 27 years and for joining us on this new endeavor.
With Grateful Hearts,Linda Micheletti and Mary Alice Victorino Event Co-Chairs

RACHEL CANNADYRachel Cannady is the American Cancer Society’s Strategic Director of Cancer Caregiver Support, where she serves as the knowledge expert for the Society’s caregiver initiatives and activities. She is responsible for developing a nationwide strategic framework for coordinating, communicating, and integrating interdisciplinary and inter-organizational caregiver research and program dissemination and implementation. She also coordinates the development and communication of key messages for internal and external audiences to advance the Society’s priorities and programs relative to cancer caregivers. Her motto is, “I care for people who care for people.”
LYNN MILLERFor my 70th birthday I received a priceless gift, early detection of breast cancer. I had no symptoms and, in fact, it did not show up on my annual mammogram. An MRI, recommended by my care team at Nancy Ausonio Mammography Center, picked it up.
Now, at 73, I’m grateful for great health and a blessed full life with my husband of 50 years, Jeff, our 2 children, Erin & Troy, and their families. Please, do not allow fear, Covid or anything else keep you from self care. Early detection could save your life!
LINDSAY MCMAINSThis is year 11 since my breast cancer diagnosis. I don’t know how I would have been able to navigate this journey without the unconditional love of my husband, Brian, my boys, and my unwavering faith. Here we are today sharing our story in order to give hope to others who may just be starting theirs. We aren’t promised a life without pain, laughter without sorrow, nor sun without rain- but God did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears, and light for the way.

This video series offers educational and psychosocial support for caregivers as they assist with the everyday needs of cancer patients. Research has shown that the quality of life for caregivers may be maximized when their needs in the context of cancer are met. A survey showed that the most common primary needs of cancer caregivers are:
Information on how to provide care (cancer, its treatment, long-term and late side eff ects)
Emotional support/stress management (anxiety/depression/fear/anger)
Shared responsibilities for medical decisions
Communication and problem-solving skills
Financial concerns/employment benefi ts
Respite services/social support
Instrumental support (cooking, transportation)
Managing their own wellness, health, and health behaviors
Caregivers Need Support, Too. An estimated 17 million Americans with a history of cancer were alive on January 1, 2019, and this number is projected to reach more than 22 million by January 1, 2030.* As they battle this disease they depend on their caregiver for support. Like patients, caregivers contact the American Cancer Society via telephone and email requesting information, service referrals, support programs, and other general service requests. Last year alone, caregivers accounted for nearly 30% of the total service requests received.
In addition to their normal day-to-day tasks, caregivers juggle many roles – driver, cook, appointment planner, companion, legal assistant, fi nancial planner, and home health aide. How they cope with these responsibilities can have a huge infl uence on how the cancer patient
deals with their illness. If the caregiver can fi nd balance in their life and feels supported, they in turn are able to off er encouragement to help the patient stick with a demanding treatment plan and take other steps to get well, like eating healthy meals and getting enough rest.
Caregivers are part of a cancer care team. When a loved one has cancer, the caregiver is the one person who knows everything that is going on with the patient. They coordinate the patient’s care, serve as the primary communicator to family, friends, and medical staff – all while trying to help their loved one live as normal a life as possible.Caregiver Resource Guide

The American Cancer Society is committed to providing much-needed support to cancer caregivers. As part of this commitment, we provide targeted information, education, and support to meet their needs. Our Caregiver Resource Guide was developed to improve: a) their confidence in their role as a caregiver; b) their caregiving
skills in key areas; c) their ability to manage their own health and wellness (psychosocial and physical); and d) their access to services through multiple modalities and channels. With your help, we can distribute these guides to caregivers across the country.
Providing our Caregiver Resource Guide to your patients’ loved ones could be a critical first step in helping answer so many of their care-related questions, and provide them with the guidance they need to be confident and supportive caregivers.
