If New York's Playboy Clubonly had had its cabaret license. . . what a show it could havebeen! In the Playroom of theclub last Sunday evening, therewere five Rolling Stones,America's Roy Orbison andBritain's newest rage, TomJones.

It was all part of LondonRecords own hat -tipping trib-ute to its great British groupand their new find, the Jonesboy, and the party followedthe appearance of both on theEd Sullivan show. Also attend-ing were a host of press, radioand TV people, along with aflock of Bunnies who wereparticularly excited over theStones' Mick Jagger.

Turning out in force werenumerous members of thebrass from London, includingBritish Decca chief, Sir Ed-ward Lewis and Lady Lewisfrom England; D. H. (T. B.)Toiler -Bond, head of BritishDecca-owned London Recordsof America, and such Londonexecs as Walt Maguire, HerbGoldfarb and Moe Shulman.

Present too, was WesleyRose of Nashville's world-wideAcuff -Rose publishing record-ing and management interests,which has the American man-agement for Tom Jones. Join-ing Rose was his new vicepresident, Bob McCluskey,singer Roy Orbison, who is alsomanaged by Rose, plus suchother A -R family people asLloyd Greenfield, who handlespart of the New York end ofthe business and Colin Berlinfrom the London office.

Newport's New SiteThe Newport Jazz Festival

will be held in Festival Field,Newport, R.I. this year, on July1, 2, 3, and 4. Festival Field, ac-cording to prcilucer GeorgeWein, less than a mile from thecenter of Newport on ConnellHighway, "may very possiblybe the permanent festival sitelong sought after in Newport.It is an ideal location for ourFestival activities."

Talent set for this year'sFestival includes: Count Basie,Miles Davis, Duke Ellington,Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Car-men McRae, Joe Williams, theModern Jazz Quartet, JohnColtrane, Thelonious Monk,Herbie Mann, Buddy Rich, ArtBlakey, Les McCann, LouisBellson, Billy Taylor, BudFreeman, Wes Montgomery,

the opening night show on July1, called "The Family Of Jazz."On this program will be bluessingers Muddy Waters, Mem-phis Slim, Willie Dixon andJoe Williams, Dizzy Gillespie,and the Modern Jazz Quartet.

Rutgers Rocks

The student radio station atRutgers University in NewBrunswick, N.J., WRSU, hasbeen on the spot in coveringthe arrival of British rock actsto the U.S.A. During AprilWSRU deejays Mike Jarmusand Ed Osborne, and engineer-deejay Howie Feldmesser, haveobtained exclusive interviewswith Herman's Hermits andWayne Fontana and the Mind -benders. They have workedwith the Christ the King CYOin Manville, N.J., which hiresperformers for its weekly band-stand show, and with the co-operation of deejay Stu Kayeof WAEB in Allentown, Pa.

Station covered the Hermitsconcert at Rutgers April 19,

and the Wayne Fontana con-cert April 25. From now on in-terviews of top pop artists willbecome a regular part of theWRSU programming.

Pet In Movies Too

Petula Clark will be featuredalong with Herman and theHermits, Rita Pavone and Ger-man star Peter Alexander inthe new movie "Pop Goes TheWorld." Stars of the picturewill be Groucho Marx, StanleyHolloway and Buster Keaton,as three thieves out to rob abank at Monte Carlo during apop music festival. Two Amer-ican pop singers are expectedto be added to the cast shortly.

Country Show MissesSome of the top country acts

in the nation came to NewYork on April 30 to star in aweek long country music showat t' -e recently re -opened NewYork Paramount. The acts in-cluded stars Hank Snow,Flatt & Scruggs, Kitty Wells,Dave Dudley, Johnny Wright,Dick Curless, Bill Phillips,Ruby Wright and Juanita Rose.They gave what critics calleda whale of a show. But attend-ance was poor, and the grossfor the week was only about$25,000 at a $3 top.

A show of this stature shouldhave done much better, butNew York, with rare excep-tions, has not cottoned muchto country shows. An Oprybooking at the old Astor Roofback in t 1950's was a dis-

The answer to the failure ofcountry shows to make it inNew York might very well bedue to overambitious bookings.A one nighter with top countrynames, as long as it is inten-sively promoted and adver-tised, might be the best wayfor a country show to bebooked in the big city. Thereare a lot of country fans in theNew York area but they arenot easily enticed away fromTV plays and movies.

Paramount FutureThe failure of the Country

Music show at the New YorkParamount Theater, after thesuccess of the Soupy Sales rockshow the week previous (April16) has made Morris Levy,producer, decide to orient allfuture Paramount Theatershows toward the teen-ager.After the Xavier Cugat Show,which opened May 7, showsslated at the theater featureClay Cole and rock acts, plusthe much touted Electronovi-sion movie, "Harlow," a showwith Mary Wells, then an IrvinFeld rock show, another showstarring Gary Lewis, and ashow with the RighteousBrothers.

Capitol Record ClubABC Paramount Records and

its subsidiary labels, Impulse,Command, and Westminster,are now going to be availablefor distribution through theCapitol Record Club. Theagreement was set by ABCParamount president LarryNewton and Capitol presidentAlan Livingston, who signedthe deal the first week in May.It was negotiated through Ed-ward L. Nash, head of the Cap-itol Record Club.

This is the first time thatABC -Paramount product hasever been available through adisc club, and it marks the firstmajor outside label distribu-tion deal by the Capitol Club.

Initial product from ABC -Paramount for the CapitolClub totals 22 ABC -Par LP's,seven Impulse sets, twelveCommand, and two Westmin-ster packages. The Capitol Clubwill make additional selectionsregularly from the catalogs ofthe four labels.

Some of the names whose al-bums will be available includeRay Charles, the Impressions,Barry Sisters, Frank Fontaine,Soupy Sales, Carol Channing,Carlos Montoya, Gary McFar-land, John Coltrane, CharlieMingus, Enoch Light, RayCharles Singers, and ShirleyScott. Classical LP's will fea-ture John Williams and Her-man Scherchen.

Dunhill Label StartsDunhill Records was formed

last week by a four-way part-nership consisting of Jay Lask-er, Lou Adler, Bobby Robertsand Pierre Cossette. All of thepartners are men well expe-rienced in the record business.Jay Lasker was formerly withr

Kapp and Reprise Records andmost recently was executivehead of VeeJay.

Lou Adler, a long-time suc-cessful indie producer, former(he started Jan and Dean)vice-president of Aldon Music,is a partner in the record pro-ducing firm with Cossette andRoberts called Dunhill Pro-ductions, which is responsiblefor the record career of JohnnyRivers. Dunhill Productionsalso has signed to it suchnames as John Bubbles, theFantastic Baggies, Shelley Fa -bares, and Terry Black.

Pierre Cossette and BobbyRoberts are partners in a man-agement firm that representsAnn Margret, Vic Damone, Janand Dean, Shelley Fabares,Johnny Rivers, John Raitt,Anna Maria Alberghetti, DickShawn and Terry Black.

The new record firm intendsto start with a small roster ofartists, and will concentrate onboth the singles and albumfields. Jay Lasker expects toset up distribution for the Dun-hill label during May, and tohave records out on the newlabel in June. Firm's address is321 South Beverly Drive, Bev-erly Hills, California.

Rudy The DoctorRudy Valentyne, the Rou-

lette Records star, deliveredhis own baby Thursday (6).He was on his way to the hos-pital with his wife, but wasunable to hail a cab. He flaggeddown a car, placed his wife inthe back seat, and deliveredthe child himself, a 5 lb. 4 oz.baby girl. Mother, daughter,and father are all doing well.

Chellman's New SlotChuck Chellman, formerly

with Starday Records, hasjoined Monument Records asvice-president in charge of

marketing. Chellman succeedsJohnny Sippel, who left Monu-ment about two months ago tojoin Mercury Records in Chi-cago. Fred Foster, head ofMonument, said that ". . .

Hechter to AtlanticConnie Hechter has been ap-

pointed Director of Advertisingand Publicity for Atlantic andAtco Records. The announce-ment was made in New Yorkthis week by Jerry Wexler,Vice President of the labels.Hechter replaces Bob Altshuler,who joined Columbia as Di-rector of Publicity.

Hechter will be responsiblefor all advertising and publicityfunctions for the corporation.He will also direct national al-bum promotion.

Prior to joining Atlantic,Hechter was the National LPPromotion Manager for PhilipsRecords. He came to Philipsfrom KDWB Radio, Minneapo-lis, a Crowell -Collier affiliate,where he was Advertisingand Sales Promotion Manager.Hechter first entered the rec-ord industry as Midwest Pro-motion Manager for MercuryRecord Corporation.

A BIG MAN. Al Hirt is a big man-there must be close to 250pounds of him-with a big black beard, a big (though non -jazz)trumpet sound, a big family (eight children plus Mr. and Mrs.)and big plans for the summer, when he'll take over CBS' JackieGleason slot for 13 weeks.

"I've been playing this horn for 36 years," Hirt told us a fewweeks ago while relaxing between his two debut concerts atCarnegie Hall a few weeks ago (April 22). "I've paid my duesall right. But nothing ever happened so big as it did when I gotmy first hit record, "Java," on RCA Victor. That does it forany artist.

"They used to put me down-I mean the critics put me down-when they talked about me in a jazz sense, but man, they saidit, not me. I've never claimed to be jazz. I don't improvise whenI'm blowing. I only wish I could, like say, Dizzy. But I've hada little experience.

WORKED EVERY GIG. "I played in grade school, in highschool and then in the service I used to blow for the troops atthe Embarkation Center in Boston. I worked about every gigthere is, behind strippers, in the society bands and in the theaterpits. I played lead trumpet with the studio band at WWL, NewOrleans and with Ray McKinley and Tommy Dorsey. But thelead man doesn't take the solos; he doesn't improvise. I justalways tried to entertain.

Hirt and Steve Sholes"My Carnegie Hall concert was a thrill .

"I got as big a thrill when I played with the Boston Symphony . . .

"When it comes to entertaining, some of these jazz cats couldtake a few lessons. Some of them get so inside themselves thatnobody understands what they're trying to say. When you getin that bag, people don't even try to understand. The publicgets to feel they're intruding. The jazz aficionado has to be made;he's not born and he has to be weaned on what he can dig."

Al Hirt cut his first records for the Southland label in NewOrleans and later went to Audio Fidelity, before signing withVictor to do some albums with Marty Paich and Billy May onthe Coast. Still looking for his first hit, Al took the advice ofVictor's vice president, Steve Sholes, and went to Nashville tomeet Chet Atkins. The first session there produced the hit, "Java."

CAN'T FORGET NASHVILLE. "I can't forget those cats inNashville," he continued. "They are great musicians and don'tneed charts (arrangements). They don't use 'em. I'd say 'Is thisa recording session?' And one of them would say, 'Okay, let'stry this' and it would come out man, it made it. When that 'Java'started moving, my whole catalog of all the older stuff startedselling.

"I've done most all of my recording there since, although myCarnegie Hall concert was cut live for an album. I think it willbe great because we had about the best guys in New York play-ing in that Carnegie band. In fact, it was a little embarrassing

standing up there in front of cats like J. J. Johnson, JeromeRichardson and Seldon Powell. They really blow.

"That was a thrill, but I think I got just as big a thrill when Irecorded with the Boston Symphony. There I was in SymphonyHall playing ethereal music with 93 musicians. Their pitch isso perfect, you've got to play a little sharp to be exactly right.I thought I was flat a few times. I stood up and told them theywere the greatest.

"I have a lot of favorites. The Beatles I like. They helped meand every record artist by getting people to the record stores.I like Dizzy, of course. Who wouldn't want to play like him?Clark Terry and Don Fagerquist are both good. And I admirethe technique of some of the country guys too, like Grady Mar-tin, one terrific guitarist, and the same with Hank Garland andChet Atkins and for piano, Floyd Cramer. Hank Williams wasall by himself, of course. I even remember the Bird (CharlieParker) digging Hank Williams."

LIKES TO BE HOME. Hirt tries to never be away from homeand his night club in New Orleans for too long. He's still got sixkids on the home front, with one daughter already married, andanother on the West Coast working as a dancer with Nick Castle.

"I'll be spending a lot of time in New York this summer withmy TV show. I'm really excited about it, and the people around

me. Ed Sullivan's producer, Bob Precht, is producing our showand we have Mort Lindsay as the musical director. You remem-ber the great stuff he did with Judy Garland? I'm picking theplayers for the orchestra myself and I can tell you I'm goingfirst class all the way.

"We'll be using singers and instrumentalists of all kinds. I'dlike to have some Nashville guests and maybe we'll have a panelor two of great musicians. Maybe we'll even have my daughterdancing on the show. She should be good if she works with NickCastle, but she'll have to audition like all the rest.

A BIG JOB. "With my other kids, well, there's a lot of themand I hate to be away too long. I think my wife and I will bringtwo of them up to New York at a time. My father-in-law, who'sa retired school teacher, will be home to take over too. Mybrother is the headmaster of a school down in New Orleans andhe'll help while we're away. It's a big job."

Meanwhile, Al Hirt is happy about a few trumpet recordsdoing so well, in addition to his own. "Bert Kaempfert has donesome good things with a trumpet lead and that's all to the good.You hear a good bit about Billy Butterfield and Ray Anthonytoo and that's also good. I say let's all keep working to keep themliking that horn sound and make some good bread while it'saround to be made." REN GREVATT

Mickie The Most

The English producer's hit string could make him hissecond million. He made his first in the stock market.Now it's Herman, the Animals, and American acts

FIVE GOLD DISCS. On April 26, 1965,Mickie Most accepted an award of fivegold discs for Herman's Hermits. He's thesuccessful producer of all Herman's rec-ords-and has also produced best sellingdiscs by The Animals, Nashville Teens andBrenda Lee.

Just a couple of weeks ago, the Most(as he is known in hip disc circles), pro-duced Bobby Vinton's session in England,to create an image for the multi -millionseller artist in that country.

In a year, Mickie Most discs have soldover 15,000,000, and he has become a mil-lionaire. Ironically enough, his first milliondollars came not from producing hit rec-ords, but by making shrewd stock marketinvestments.

ON SECOND MILLION. His secondmillion will doubtless come from the re-cording industry, for Mickie holds hide -pendent contracts with three major com-panies-MGM and Epic in this country,and EMI in Britain-which are worth aguaranteed $750,000. That's a lot of greenstuff when you've only been producingdiscs for a year.

Eight years ago, Mickie Most was onehalf of a singing duo called the MostBrothers. Between dates he worked ina London coffee bar. The other half of

the group was Alex Murray, today a suc-cessful producer in his own right, whorecently scored heavily both here and inEngland with "Go Now" by the MoodyBlues.

"Funny how the circle turns," saidMickie over a breakfast of apple pie andvanilla ice cream. "In those days, JackGood was producing his first TV Showcalled "6.5 Special," which pioneered beaton British television. Tommy Steele hadjust had his first hit record, and now he'sstarring in his own musical on Broadway.Lionel Bart was celebrating his first suc-cess as a songwriter, and I was trying formy first show business break.

"Every one of us made the Americanscene-sooner or later. My scene was later.but somehow we all seem to have met up."

SOUTH AFRICAN SAFARI. Shortlyafter the Most Brothers split up, Mickiewent to live in South Africa where hemade an excellent living as a singer. Hestayed there four years and returned toEngland about two years ago-much thewiser for his international experiences.

"In Africa, I started producing my owndiscs and recording other people. It wasnothing serious, but it gave me a taste ofthe industry, and a far better understand-ing. I was a singer who learned the tech-nical side. This is an advantage.

"When I returned to England, I wentout on the road as a British type R & Bsinger with a couple of packages, includ-ing one with the Everly Brothers. I startedrecording other people. My first hit was"Baby Let Me Take You Home" by theAnimals. Then we had "House of the Ris-ing Sun," which happened for them in theStates too. It took the group 15 minutes torecord that number. The shortest sessionwe ever had."

EVERYTHING A SMASH. Then all theother groups started happening for Mickie.Brenda Lee specifically requested he pro-duce her while she was in London. Nearlyeverything he put out was a smash.

Record companies started falling overthemselves for his services as an indieproducer.

"I listened to offers till I thought mybrain would burst. I didn't know what todo, or what to accept, or which were betterthan others. It was very confusing. AllenKlein came to me and said he could makeme a million dollars. I wanted to runaway. I didn't think it could be straight.But he did. He also unconfused my fuddledmind."

Mickie set up gigantic corporations,handling everything from record manu-facturing to producing and promotion. Thebusiness is now so expertly handled hesays he even makes money in his sleep.

"Isn't that beautiful. While I'm sleeping,someone, somewhere is making me money.That's a great life."

HERMAN'S BIGGEST. According toMGM Records, "Mrs. Brown, You've GotA Lovely Daughter" is one of the fastestchart riding pop singles ever released inAmerica. By the time it was issued, it hadan advance order of over half a million,and it hit the charts well within the toptwenty.

"That record broke because of paid ad-vertising time on the album," said Mickie."We wanted to promote Herman's firstL.P. It had started selling a bit and wewanted to make it a monster. We boughtadvertising slots on selected radio sta-tions, and pulled out "Mrs. Brown" to sellit. We were hardly prepared for the chainreaction it set off, both in album sales anda demand for the single.

"I told MGM I'd let them issue the trackafter the L.P. had sold half a million.Herman had other records happening, anda new release at the time would haveclashed with "Can't You Hear My Heart-beat," and plans to issue "Silhouettes."When it hit half a million, the single wasreleased.

"Now Herman has a gold disc for thesingle and the album, which has totalledover $1,000,000 in sales. A new release,"Wonderful World," is happening for himin England.

Chips off the old blocksSOS and daughters of famous show business folk follow in their

parent's footsteps, but they do best when they find their own groove

MUSICAL COUSINS: Melinda Marx, (Groucho's daughter), and Bill Marx(the late Harpo's son) discuss their musical careers in Hollywood. Both Melindaand Bill have had records released recently by Veday.

A HAPPY FAMILY. The pop recording field is literally one bighappy family these days with more and more children of estab-lished performers making it as disk artists.

One of the newest star -scion groups is Dino, Desi and Billy,who make their network TV debut Wednesday (12) on ABC -TV's"Shindig." Desi is the son of Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball. Dinois one of Dean Martin's numerous off -spring. Billy Hinsche is thesole first -generation performer in the act.

The boys record for Frank Sinatra's Reprise label, which alsolists Sinatra's daughter Nancy on its artist roster and SammyDavis, whose father carried him on stage before he could walk.

Another second -generation show business group, headed bySoupy Sales' 13 -year -old son Tony, made its TV debut April 24on "Wonderama" (WNEW-TV, New York). Tagged "Tony andthe Tigers," the group also includes Tony's brother Hunt ondrums and actor Burgess Meredith's boy John on guitar.

NOT ALWAYS A HELP. Although a certain degree of nepo-tism is always a help in show business-or any other kind ofbusiness-many children of stars-particularly stars of legendarystature-ultimately conclude their heritage is a handicap. Audi-ences expect too much too soon. It's even more difficult when-as is often the case-genetics decree that the aspiring singer isa sound -alike of his famous parent.

Bing Crosby's sons have struggled against this "almost thesame but not as good" critical appraisal for years. Bing's brotherBob, also a Crosby sound -alike, fought a losing battle againstthe same critics during his singing days.

Judy Garland, may beat the jinx when she opens on Broadwaythis week in "Flora the Red Menace," since Mother has yet toappear in the legit medium.

Frank Sinatra Jr. is currently making a living by doing anout and out imitation of his father with the nostalgic TommyDorsey Band package. However, the mimicry obviously hasSinatra Sr.'s parental approval.

In a recent Life Magazine article, Sinatra Sr., said "When myson Frankie said he would like to start singing, we came upwith the idea of his going with the Dorsey band because itseemed to be one of the few that constantly works. In anotheryear, you see, he's going to have the best experience-experienceyou cannot buy anywhere. He works every single night to adifferent audience."

JACK JONES. Nevertheless, in the same article, Sinatra said"Of the male newcomers, Jack Jones is the best potential singerin the business." It's interesting to note that Jones (son of one-time MGM star Allen Jones and actress Irene Hervey) has delib-erately eschewed his father's light opera vocal style. In fact,Jack originally based his vocal technique on old Sinatra records.Today he admits "At first I imitated Frank Sinatra but then Idecided that if I wanted to make it I had better find my owngroove."

Another celebrity off -shoot, comedian Jerry Lewis' son Gary,also plays it his own style. Gary said his mother (former bandsinger Patti Lewis) advised him many years ago to learn to dosomething his father couldn't do.

Gary studied four instruments, (sax, guitar, drums and clarinet)that his father hadn't mastered. Today he is a best-selling artistin the rock and roll field, whereas Jerry Lewis' biggest recordsuccess was in the old fashioned Al Jolson groove.

It may or may not be significant that Jack Jones and GaryLewis are currently the most successful second -generation per-formers in the business.

OTHER HEIRS. Other would-be heirs to stardom on the re-cording scene today include Harold Lloyd Jr., Coral; Peter Ford,Capitol, son of actor Glenn Ford and dancer Eleanor Powell;Joey Heatherton, Coral, daughter of Ray "Merry Mail Man"Heatherton; Rick Nelson of Ozzie and Harriet lineage; CharlieChaplin's sons-Sidney, co-star of Broadway's "Funny Girl,"and Michael, London; Rex Harrison's son Noel, London; MarthaRaye's daughter, Melody Condos, RCA Victor; Dean Martin's15 -year -old daughter Deana, Columbia; Miami deejay MortonDowney Jr.; John Hammond, Jr., Vanguard; Bob Crosby's sonChris, Challenge; Betty Hutton's daughter Diane Lindsay, VeeJay; Doris Day's son Terry Melcher, a Columbia a. & r. staffer;Groucho Marx's daughter Melinda and the late Harpo's son Bill,both VeeJay; and ABC -TV's King Family-all 37 of them.

Show business has always been a family affair in the countryfield. There's Red Foley, father-in-law of Pat Boone; the CarterFamily, the Johnson Family, Ernest and Justin Tubb, and theWrights-Johnny, Kitty (Wells) and daughter Ruby.

The gifted producer -arranger has come upwith hit after hit for the pop market

A SOUND MARKET. With all due re-spects to the artist, songwriter, and lyric-ist, in our current market, the single mostimportant person in making a "hit" re-cording is most often the arranger (or, asis increasingly the case, the arranger -pro-ducer). For ours is a "sound" market, andwhen you lay your needle down on thefirst tracks of a recording, the sound youhear (which hopefully makes you want tolisten further) is the invention of the ar-ranger. He is the real hitmaker in ourbusiness. But since we indulge in a starsystem, he's generally the least wellknown to the public-though the industryitself is, for obvious reasons, very awareof his talents.

In the past two or so years, one of thehottest hitmakers in our business is ayoung (26 -year -old) chap from New Jer-sey, named Charlie Calello. Since you maynot recognize the name, consider theserecommendations: Charlie is the arranger -producer of three big current chart hits-Shirley Ellis' "Clapping Song," SoupySales "The Mouse," and the fast risingEddie Rambeau single, "Concrete andClay."

SEVEN ON CHARTS. While three hitsin the Pop 100 is a phenomenal achieve-ment for any one arranger, it does notrepresent any kind of a "record" for Cal-ello. "You might call it luck, coincidence,or whatever you like," said Charlie, "butin January, 1964, I had seven singles inthe Pop 100, three of which were in theTop 10. And in January, 1965, I had a simi-lar streak of hits-seven out of a hundred."Then he laughed and added: "And nobodyknew who I was."

We sat with Charlie after a session he'ddone for Colpix Records, recording foursides by the great blues singer, JimmyRushing. Charlie was obviously excitedabout this session. "You know, I can

hardly believe it. When I was a kid I dugall the jazz, as I think we all (arrangers)did. And some of my favorite records, hadbeen produced by Jack Lewis (of Colpix,who was producing this session), albumslike "Collaboration" with Shorty Rogersand Andre Previn. I find it hard to believethat I'm here now working on this sessionwith Jack. It's all happened so fast."

FRIENDS HELPED. "None of this couldhave happened to me if I hadn't had thefriends I do. You see, I've known FrankieValli of the 4 Seasons since I was fifteen.And Frankie always said: 'When I makeit I'm going to take you along.' I had myown band and we did those tough one -niters, and when 'Sherry' and 'Big GirlsDon't Cry,' made the Seasons, Frankiecalled me off the road and offered memoney to leave my band.

"Of course, the boys were out on theroad nearly all that first year, and theyreleased stuff already in the can, so thefirst date I did for them was 'Walk Like aMan.' Frankie was always the best press -agent a guy could have. In fact he forcedme into situations and commitments Inever thought I was capable of. Since BobCrewe (Genius, Inc.) produced the Sea-sons, I got to work closely with him. Hewas invaluable to developing my career.Things just fell into place. Bob started re-lying on me more and more, once I got thefeel of that unreal studio world, and finallygraduated me to a full-fledged producer."

Another champion of Charlie's is Har-riet Wasser, a promotion -minded younglady about Manhattan who was talkinghim up at every opportunity. "Charlie's sodarned modest," says Harriet. "Someonehas to push him . . . or had to, anyway.Now he's made it, and big."

STRING OF PEARLS. Besides the 4Seasons, Charlie has had a string of sin-gles hits with Diane Renay ("Kiss Me

Sailor," "Navy Blue," and "Watch Out,Sally."), Tracey Dey ("Gonna Get AlongWithout You Now," "Teenage Cleopatra"and "Here Comes the Boy."), the RagDolls ("Society Girl" and "Dusty"), LennyO'Henry ("Across the Street"), FreddieCannon ("Abigail Beecher"), the Reflec-tions ("Poor Man's Son"), the Orions("Knock, Knock"), the Four Evers ("BeMy Girl"), Johnny Tillotson ("Angel"),Shirley Ellis ("Name Game"), and manymore.

On albums, Calello has worked withSoupy Sales, Vi Velasco, Nancy Ames,Diane Renay, the Bob Crewe Orchestra,and, of course, the 4 Seasons.

Charlie's next, and biggest assignmentto date, is the scoring of the Joe Catesfilm "Who Killed Teddy Bear," which starsJuliet Prowse, Sal Mineo, Jan Murray andElaine Stritch. He is currently in Englandcompleting that assignment. While this ishis first American film score, he scoredthe Italian film, "Lipstick," last season.

BUSMAN'S HOLIDAY. Before settingout for London, Charlie couldn't resist theopportunity to "sneak" into a session be-ing conducted by Don Costa. Later he in-troduced himself. "I've always thoughtCosta is one of the greatest arrangers-forhis honesty and warmth. He did an intro-duction on one of the tunes the other daythat just knocked me out. Another favoriteis Billy May. I dig him for his humor andwarmth. (I use the word warmth the waysome people use the word soul)."

Like many arrangers, Charlie is also agifted composer, but he rarely mixes histalents on any date. "No, you see if I didone of my own numbers I couldn't be veryobjective about it. At least that's how Ifeel. If you're going for a hit, you have tobe ruthlessly objective. I can do that withsomebody else's material."

Keep your eye on . . . THE HOLLIESManchester's other group-the one with as many hits as Fred-

die and the Dreamers in England, but still to make it here-isThe Hollies. They are released in the U.S. on the Imperial label.

They kicked up a storm in New York at the recent Soupy SalesShow, were equally as musically excellent on "Hullabaloo," andat present are negotiating for a July return on the Dick Clarktour.

Just about a month ago, the Hollies became the third pop groupto join Harold Davison. His other two are Dave Clark and theAnimals.

What kind of image would the Hollies like to create in Amer-

ica? At home they're known as the clean cut, good soundinggroup from Manchester. They can always be relied on to comeup with good material on record and a well balanced program forpersonal appearances. Mostly their discs have been upbeatswingin' type ballads, but they're equally at home performingrock classics like "Rockin' Robin."

Just for the record, the Hollies are: Allan Clarke (vocals),Bobby Elliott (drums), Eric Haydock (bass), Tony Hicks (leadguitar) and Graham Nash (rhythm guitar and vocals). Theyalready have many American fan clubs who keep their eye on

Gary Stevens, fop -rateddeejay from Detroit, has be-come the fifth Good Guy onNew York's WMCA. This iswhat it's like

THE NEW SCENE. What's it like foran out-of-town deejay to move into NewYork and try to become part of a teamof Good Guys on a highly rated station inthe big town? How does he react to thechange of climate, change of scene, changeof audience and a change of hours? Howdoes he feel about four -sheets posted allover town reading "Is Gary Stevens real-ly a good guy? No. He's a great guy!"

Gary Stevens is the new Good Guy inNew York. He comes from Detroit, fromstation WKNR where he was a top -rateddisc jockey. He is now with StationWMCA in the 7 to 11 p.m. slot, the bigslot, make or break slot.

He came into New York after the big-gest radio nightime shakeup in Gothamin the memory of most record and stationpeople. The big guns, the big names whoused to hold down the top posts and whomade New York still seem like the swing-ing rock town it was when Alan Freedwas creating all kinds of excitement atWINS in the mid -1950's, have vanished.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW. Murray theK is no longer on WINS. WMCA's B.Mitchell Reed who had captured a bigsegment of the kid audience has left toreturn to his old post at KFWB in LosAngeles. Scott Mimi has been long gonefrom WABC. Only Bruce Morrow, thecousin Brucie of the laughs and the gim-micks is still swinging at night. The otherbig night names have fled, and the kidsget their sounds via TV.

WINS has turned to news. WMCA letits nightime slot be filled by swing -shift-ing its other good guys for almost twomonths. WNEW's new policy of playingslightly more raucous records has ledsome radio -record people to intimate thatthe station might go rock all the way, apossibility that seems as distant as themoon landings.

The Good Guys at WMCA give awaysweatshirts, appear in funny costumes,play baseball with the Playboy Bunnies,make all trade functions and are probably

the closest group of guys working togethersince the Harlem Globetrotters.

Gary Stevens has been through all thisbefore. He was a Good Guy at WFUN inMiami, which helped to originate theGoody Guy format. So he knows.

NEW YORK KIDS. What has surprisedhim is the New York kids. "They're morehip than the kids in Detroit," he said awhile back at a luncheon at Sardi." A lotof the things I used to do in Detroit havenot made out here. I guess it's because thekids are more sophisticated.

"It's all part of being in New York, Ithink," continued Gary Stevens. "In othercities you look for things that are hap-pening-here anyone or anything thathappens comes to you.

"I get calls from kids who want to talkto me about my show. They use words likegimmick and format, words you wouldn'thear used in Detroit by anyone exceptradio people. One youngster called me upa few days after I started at WMCA andsaid "Man, you need more gimmicks."

NEED TO BE TALKED TO. "Yet, inspite of all this, New York kids still needto be talked to, like normal youngstersanywhere. I'm willing to alter my style tofit the market, but I still want to be my-self. I'll use my own gimmicks, the Woo-leyburger, a ferocious animal that doesn'ttalk, only growls. I have to interpretwhat he says. I'll also introduce the Frog.He growls too, and I'll have to explainwhat he is saying.

"And I won't play Joe Nice -Guy, just

because I'm in New York. Some jockeyscome to the big city and try to pleaseeverybody. Not me. I'll be me.

"Even though the New York kids aremore sophisticated about things, they arenot more hip musically. In fact they arenot as aware of many of the new recordsas the youngsters in Detroit. That couldbe because they have so many radio sta-tions in New York with all kinds of dif-ferent formats. It also could be becausethere are so many things here to distractthem from records."

SHOW A MIXTURE. Stevens' show isa mixture of up-to-date and on the way uprock discs, a mixture of rock and rhythmand blues that lies more in the old AlanFreed tradition than that of his predeces-sor B. Mitchell Reed. He intersperses hiscommercials and straight announcementswith gags and sort -of -one line put-ons. Hedoesn't sound like anyone else in town,so he has to make it on his own.

With the help of the Good Guy imagethat is.

Is Gary Stevens a Good Guy? Can hebring to his shows that mixture of fresh-ness and audience appeal that WMCAwants to make that nightime slot the top -rated of the pop music stations? He's try-ing hard, with the Wooleyburger, one-liners, and smartly paced programming.

He'll probably learn a lot from thosesmart New York kids. And they mightlearn a lot from him. If they like himhe'll be a Good Guy for a long, long timeto come. BOB ROLONTZ

When Beatles new film isseen it will feature several newGeorge Harrison compositions.He told colleague Mike Cham-berlain that he likes playingaround on guitar and has want-ed to write for some time.

The trouble is that he nevergets any peace and quiet. Re-cently however he locked him-self in a hotel room for a dayor so and came up with twonumbers which will be in thefilm.

Apparently he played themover to the other three at a re-cent recording session for thefilm. They liked them andworked out arrangements sonow we have the debut ofGeorge Harrison-`composer.'

The Miracles, Vandellas, EarlVan Dyke etc. all travel bycoach. The Supremes travelfrom date to date by limousine.

If there are any howls thatthe tour lost money after it'sall over it might be worthbearing in mind that the Brit-ish accompanying musiciansare being paid $300 per weekon the tour. That's well over

Freddie And Dreamers ToStar In "Cuckoo Patrol"

Two short months ago GrandNational Films asked Freddieand the Dreamers if they hadany ideas for a comedy filmscript. This company has re-leased the boys three previousepics.

They did have, thousands ofthem, but they amalgamatedinto one to be titled "CuckooPatrol."

"Being idiots," Derek of theDreamers told me, "we decidedto centre the plot around fiveboy scouts, a scoutmaster andcook. Needless to say we playthe boy scouts-we all lookmarvellous in shorts."

"We're the type of boyscouts," Freddie continued,"who can do nothing right andhave all their good deeds mis-fire.

"It is planned to be seventyminutes long, and that for yourinformation is 4,200 seconds,and it's to be filmed exclusivelyin Britain."

"In the woods" Derek added."I've always wanted to be a

boy scout rubbing sticks to-gether in the woods. . . ." saidFreddie whimsically!

He continued to tell me thatthe epic is being based on theThree Stooges 1940s style."Except," he added, "that eventhey could have helped an oldlady across the road withoutageing her considerably."

"We'll stick to the script. Wethrive on "Ad Libbing" and thetime spent filming in May willbe no exception."

"Filming is great," ex-claimed Freddie whilst doing aFreddie type jump in the air.And in his next breath said,

"My impressions of Americawere of very very tall build-ings!"

On a slightly more seriousnote Mr. Frederick Garritycontinued.

"The American teenagers aregreat. They're interested in usas persons not just as lunaticswhich is very unusual! Theyused to ring us up at our hotelor stop us in the street. Sorryhigh -way. And ask us whetherwe liked the States andwhether we had shaved thatmorning!? Have you ever beenstopped in the street and askedif you'd shaved? It's very em-barrassing!"

"In Britain we get girls ring-ing us but usually all they dois ask who's speaking and thenburst out giggling. "Everybodywas very friendly over thereand we were met at the airportby Elaine Cordette, who is aneighteen -year -old song writer.(She used to write songs withJackie De Shannon.)

"Elaine drove us in herCadillac to our hotel and latershowed us round Los Angeles."

Derek interrupted at thispoint.

"Wish I could have broughta portion of that sun home. Itwas fabulous!

"Elaine took us to the"Knotts Berrie Farm," an oldwestern ghost town which hasbeen transported lock stockand barrel to Hollywood.Everyone wears ten gallonhats and holsters with guns!"

You can use your dailynewspaper to sell jazz for funand profit. Assuming, ofcourse, that you are a recorddealer, you've had troublemoving jazz, and you haveread my last column.

First, turn to the TV listingpage. Check to see whetherany jazz artists are makingappearances on TV shows.Usually they'll appear on thevariety shows, although theymay even pop up on the "To-day" or "Tonight" shows, theABC late -night show, the edu-cational channel, if you haveone, and even in old movies.

Flag Those AlbumsSay that Dizzy Gillespie has

appeared on Ed Sullivan'sshow. Bright and early onMonday, you could stack to-gether some of the Gillespiealbums you have in stock andeither flag them with a sign inyour bin or stack them in abrowser box on your counter.The sign can say, simply:"DIZZY GILLESPIE-featuredOn the Ed Sullivan Show."

This isnt earth -shattering,but it is a fact that what youare trying to do now is drumup some trade from the non -jazz audience. The jazz fanswill have found you. Often TVviewers are impressed by aperformer and will pick up analbum of his if they are re-minded of the performance. Itworks the other way, too, butthen there wouldn't have beena sale anyway.

The amusement pages of thedaily newspaper will carry adsor stories about jazz artists ap-pearing in clubs or concerts inyour area. It's a simple matterto feature their albums in yourstore. Again, you merely haveto hand -letter a sign that says:"CHARLIE BYRD - CurrentlyAt Jazz City" or "STANGETZ-Featured in the film"Get Yourself A College Girl"at the Plympton.

Promotional MaterialThese are obvious and sim-

ple promotions of your jazzstock. But too often they areoverlooked by the dealer whohas more pressing matters onhis mind. The record com-panies have promotional mate-rial available, particularlywhen an artist is in the area.He may even be available fora personal appearance at thestore, although this is a rareevent for both artist and fan.However, an autographed copyof an album will sell fasterthan one without a signatureon it. If Stan Getz were ap-pearing in my town, I'd havehim autograph every album ofhis in my store, and I'd featurethem prominently.

It's also good business to fol-low the charts in Music Busi-ness. If we possibly can, we'lltry to include more jazz albuminformation pointed at dealers.Jazz can be sold. The audience isthere. It can be weaned awayfrom the mail clubs becausewhen a jazz fan wants an al-bum, he wants it now . . . notby mail later on.

Summer Jazz FestivalsAnd no matter where you

are, why not tie in with thesummer Jazz Festivals? Assoon as it's available, we'llprint the program informationfor both the Newport Jazz Fes-tival, held July 4 weekend;and the Monterey Jazz Festi-val, held in mid -September.The artists who appear can befeatured during the actual Fes-tival weekend, and later onwhen Festival albums are re-leased.

One final note: if you haven'tyet spotlighted the NARAS"Grammy" winners, tie in thealbums with the TV show,"The Best on Record," featur-ing some of the Grammy win-ners. It'll be telecast Tuesday,night, May 18, on NBC-TV.

Capitol Country Music KickCapitol Records went all out

on a country music kick thisweek. The firm launched anextensive two month countrymusic promotion with the re-lease of five country LP's, plusa deluxe two -LP set called"The World Of Country Mu-sic." The campaign will haveas its highlight the 24 track, 24artist album, which was put to-gether by Capitol Nashvillechief, Ken Nelson. The demandfor the twin -LP album was re-ported so great by Bill Tallent,Capitol's CRDC vice presidentand national sales manager,that the firm pressed up 350,-

000 copies of the album priorto release date.

The other albums in thecountry campaign spotlightSonny James, Wanda Jackson,Faron Young, and Ferlin Hus-ky. On May 31, two more coun-try albums will be added tothe group, one by Ned Miller,the other by the Louvin Broth-ers.

The "World Of Country Mu-sic" LP will be made avail-able to dealers on a one -for -one basis: with each countryLP purchased, dealers maygive one of the deluxe sets atthe promotional price.

Ernest Tubb

Ernest Tubb, one of thegreat, all-time country acts inthe business signed withDecca in 1940 and cut hisgreatest hit "Walkin' the FloorOver You," in 1941. Both theseevents came in for a celebra-tion last week as Decca brasstossed a surprise luncheon forTubb in New York's venerableFriars Club.

The occasion was full ofnostalgia for the country -lov-ers as Tubb was presented withhis first gold record, for"Walkin' the Floor," by Deccapresident, Milton Rackmil, anda gold watch by executive vicepresident, Leonard Schneider,who quipped in making thepresentation, "We gave one toRed Foley too, Ernest, and youearned yours a long time ago."

Celebrating the occasionwith Tubb were Sydney N.Goldberg, vice president,Decca Distributing Corp.,Decca country chief, OwenBradley, vice president, MartySalkin, and director of promo-tion, publicity and advertising,Lennie Salidor.

riding high on the CountryWestern charts with "Tomb-stone Every Mile" by DickCurless, has just purchased"Arms Full Of Love" byPamela Miller from BiggKountry label. The cute 10 -year -old songstress is makingconsiderable noise with thistune by her famous father,composer Eddie Miller. "ArmsFull Of Love" already appearson some charts under the oldlabel. Tower releases the rec-ord May 10.

an agreement with the CapitolRecord Club to distribute itsalbums through the club.Starting this week 10 Stardayalbums will be available viathe Capitol Club. They includesets by Cowboy Copas, GeorgeJones, Roger Miller, JohnnyBond, the Willis Brothers andothers.

Starday will not give up itsown Country Music RecordClub with the new Capitolagreement.

The Starday Country MusicClub has also been busy itself.It has recently added a flock ofJohnny Cash albums from theSun label, and Flatt & Scruggsand George Jones LP's fromthe Mercury label. These areadded to the list of country al-bums from the Starday, Hill-top, King and Hickory labels.

Starday has also made a dealfor the Capitol Record Club inCanada to acquire Stardayproduct for sale through itsclub there.

In the auto cartridge tapefield, Starday has made a dealwith Muntz Stereo Pak ofCalifornia, and 20 albums fromStarday are being rushed intothe Muntz catalog.

Chad And JeremyDear Miss Harris:

I am a subscriber to MusicBusiness who has particularlyenjoyed your articles on theBritish music scene and on theindividual groups which arepresently enjoying popularity.Because you seem so well in-formed in this area, I am ad-dressing my queries to you.

I awaited with some antici-pation, the publication in MusicBusiness of the upcoming tourschedules. These finally ap-peared in the April 24 editionand while I was pleased withtheir thoroughness, the con-tents rather displeased me. Forstarters, I simply cannot under-stand why none of the DickClark Caravans are cominginto New York when placeslike Des Moines, Iowa andLincoln, Nebraska and Syra-cuse will get to see two of thethree. This seems terribly un-fair to me and I hope you cansupply a sensible reason forsuch an oversight.

Actually, the unit I am mostdistressed about is the onelabled the Gene Pitney Showerof Stars. I have long been anardent and faithful Chad andJeremy fan. I have tried tokeep acquainted with theirmovements and plans andMusic Business has certainlybeen of assistance. I had readelsewhere that my favoriteswould be touring this springin a Dick Clark package withGene Pitney and was hopingthat this tour would make itinto the city or at least some-where in New Jersey or Con-necticut so I could realize mydesire to see them perform inperson. I can't tell you howdisappointed I was to see thattheir closest scheduled appear-ances were in Connecticut andwere for that same week-toolate to obtain tickets or planto go. As I am twenty-two,live away from home and amfree to come and go as I please,I even made inquiries aboutthe Pennsylvania concerts. Thedistances, traveling times, andfares were just too staggeringfor my budget, however. I feelnow that I may never get tosee Chad and Jeremy live.Checking a few times with theWilliam Morris Agency hasnetted me no results and I'veno idea if any New York ap-pearances are planned for thefuture, or any television datesfor that matter. Miss Harris,have you any way of finding

out? I would be most gratefulfor any information you mightbe able to supply. Seeing Chadand Jeremy in person andmeeting them has becomesomething of an obsession withme, although I know better. Iwill truly appreciate your as-sistance.

I have noticed that the Coun-try and Western department inthis magazine has taken a backseat since you bought out theMusic Reporter. For instance,ever since Burning MemoriesAlbum was a pick in February13, 1965 issue, it has been listedas Kitty Wells-Decca DL -74612. It also has been in thetop twenty listing since March27, 1965, the same way. Ac-cording to other trade maga-zines, it should be BurningMemories - Columbia CL -2289(M) or CS9089 (S), by RayPrice. I don't think BurningMemories Album by Kitty hasbeen released long enough orselling that good.

The only reason I buy theMusic Business is for the C & Wsection. I don't mind your de-voting a major part to theR & B, Classical, etc., but Ifeel that Country and Westerncertainly should be representedmore than ever. This field iscertainly becoming one of thenation's best selling and loved,from all indications of radiostations changing formats tofull time C & W. I would ap-preciate seeing a bigger C & Wfeature in the future.

I must correct an error con-cerning the times and durationof his daily WNEW-TV show.Soupy conducts his mad ses-isons Monday thru Friday from6:30 to 7:30 PM and also onSaturdays from 6 to 7.

I find it necessary to disagreewith the author of this articleas to the age group in whichSoupy rates tops. Being a

sophomore at high school, Ifind that when asked for thename of his fave performer,all my classmates will indicateSoupy Sales, with very fewexceptions. His fads and lineslike "Hey, Boobie!" spread likefire with the crowd. On theother hand, with the exceptionof his pie -throwing antics,Soupy's brand of humor is notunderstood by the five to elev-en, or so, age group.
