B4H is a ‘Social Enterprise’ which uses the power of business and its vast volunteer organiza=on to help people in developing countries with the gi> of mobility that a bicycle provides and the gi> of educa=on, data gathering and telehealth that a tablet enables in conjunc=on with a technology plaCorm. The B4H philosophy and approach is to provide tools that empower people to take charge of their own situa=on to improve their lives.
WHAT IS BICYCLES FOR HUMANITY
B4H has strong rela=onships in the developing world and an expanding base of over 50 chapters of volunteers collec=ng bikes. B4H will con=nue to expand this eco-‐system.
GLOBALLY SUPPORTED COMMUNITIES
GLOBALLY SUPPORTED COMMUNITIES
B4H has very strong rela=onships with partners in Uganda, Namibia and South Africa that deal directly with the communi=es and that are supported by many B4H Chapters. There is outstanding organiza=on on the ground within the local communi=es. The people within these communi=es, once empowered, drive ini=a=ves
B4H is harnessing the power of its volunteer movement to collect, send and distribute bicycles to the developing world.
B4H IN NUMBERS
Phase II has corporate and founda=on sponsors add tablets to a technology infrastructure to enable educa=on, data gathering and telehealth.
Bicycles provide mobility giving people beXer access to educa=on, healthcare, fresh water, economic opportunity and community.
THE BENEFITS OF A BICYCLE
Bicycles impact every aspect of a community. Jobs are created servicing the bikes, those with bikes can sell their products in distant markets, kids have more =me to go to school, healthcare workers can see more pa=ents, people can develop new businesses or extend their current business; example, people can get a beXer price for their goods, up to 3 =mes more, if they can get to market towns rather than sell to the traders who travel the back roads
An iPad or Android enables access to educa=on. See the following study to be awed by the power of self organized learning. hXp://www.ted.com/talks/sugata_mitra_build_a_school_in_the_cloud.html
THE BENEFITS OF A TABLET
Tablets enable the collec=on of community data about health, the environment and the myriad needs of the community. Tablets are also used to collect data of specific importance to corpora=ons and founda=ons to aid their projects. Data is then centralized for mining.
DATA COLLECTION
It starts with the Bicycle Empowerment Centre (BEC), a bicycle shop-‐in-‐a-‐box delivered to the community. Stocked with 450-‐500 bicycles, tools, spare parts and comprehensive training material on bicycle maintenance it is designed to empower people and their communi=es with transporta=on and the means to maintain it. The shipping container is turned into the shop.
HOW IT ALL COMES TOGETHER
The evolu=on of the BEC The objec=ve is to further empower the people with educa=on and the means to collect data to further their health care and business opportuni=es.
SKILLS EMPOWERMENT CENTRE
Adding tablets for learning, data collec=on and telehealth
Tablets have docking sta=ons for charging, syncing and onboard educa=onal so>ware. Tablets also enable access to the web. Front end so>ware on the tablet enables data collec=on for download to GHX database for medical, corporate and founda=on projects.
SKILLS EMPOWERMENT CENTRE
Evolving the BEC to a Skills Empowerment Centre and adding a telecommunica=ons plaCorm and a secure data repository to form the Global Humanity Exchange. Enabling educa=on, telehealth, social projects and business opportuni=es.
THE PROGRESSION, FROM BEC TO GHX
Contribute funding to bicycle shipping. B4H chapters are grass roots and many struggle with funding to ship the bikes they collect. Provide iPads/Androids and related equipment to turn a BEC into an SEC at very limited cost. Have local people collect informa=on to guide founda=on ac=vi=es. Access the main GHX database to determine funding ini=a=ves.
GHX and FOUNDATIONS
Volunteer Groups need informa=on. For example if a group is supplying water pumps; where are the sources of water, does it need purifica=on, where is the closest local tradesperson to keep the pumps func=oning. Pump delivery without all of these factors taken into account is not effec=ve. Educators supply informa=on and programs for the iPad/Android tablets and materials are available over the net
GHX and VOLUNTEER GROUPS
Tablets enable collec=on of community health data for medical studies. Data is centralized meaning it is available to all health organiza=ons. Local health care workers can gather individuals’ informa=on and history; data con=nues to be available as new groups are involved. Health care videos and educa=on available thru SEC.
GHX and HEALTHCARE
B4H enables a new way to reach consumers at home and in the developing world with a powerful, low cost, socially progressive approach that raises brand awareness and business success. Examples include: • Businesses in the developed world needing to improve their image and bring business into their stores
• Businesses in the developing world which need to gain compe==ve advantage
• Global businesses that need to enhance their image in the developed world by taking on socially progressive causes while, simultaneously, expanding their business in the developing world.
