WWD1 - Walking With Dinosaurs – Episode 1 – New Blood.
Teaching Notes.
Précis – This episode follows the evolution of the dinosaurs during the major periods of history –
the Jurassic, Triassic. It examines the impact of the environment of the evolution of animals.
This episode examines the competition between the species.
PART A (90 minutes)
File: PART A – Movie Closure Sheet - Hand out the closure sheet.
Teaching Suggestion:
1. (15 minutes) Prior to the movie, have the students work through the closure sheet in
small groups of 2 or 3. Have the children look at the words that might fill the spaces.
2. (60 minutes) Watch episode in small segments. Stop at appropriate intervals and discuss
the segment with the students. Until the students get in the groove, it may be necessary to
rewind and RE-LISTEN to the sections.
3. (15 minutes) Have students work in small groups to ensure they have the answers to the
closure activity.
PART B (30 – 45 minutes)
File: PART B – Crossword Activity and Answers
Teaching Suggestion:
1. (10 minutes) Go though the crossword closure exercises with the students. All these
words occur in the movie. Inform the students that you will be testing the spelling of
these words at the end of the lesson.
2. (20 minutes) Students work through the crossword and place words in the appropriate
locations.

3. (10 minutes) Mark the sheet – you could place the answers on a PowerPoint and show it
on a screen or hand out the answer sheet.
4. (10 minutes) Test a few words as a spelling activity.
PART C (45 minutes)
File: PART C – Rewrite the jumbled sentences.
Teaching Suggestion:
1. (5 minutes) Present the students either with the worksheet or the PowerPoint
2. (20 minutes) The students work through the jumbled sentences from each period of
history. Students unjumble the sentences to make sense
3. (5 minutes). Correct the answers by initiating discussions.
PART D (45 minutes)
File: Part D – Word Search
1. (10 minutes) Subsequent to jumbled sentence. Have student read and understand the
words. All this words appear in the jumbled sentence activity above.
2. (20 minutes) Once students have all the words, they must search for these words in
the word frame. The word may be placed in any direction. Only the correct word
must be included or it won’t exist in the frame.
3. (10 minutes) Correct the word press frame using the answer sheet.
