Farewell HaruHosting a youth from another

country can be a very rewardingexperience, and the Lasslett

family of Newberry has beenenjoying just that for the pastmonth.

On July 25 the family of four

welcomed Haru Suzuki intotheir home. Haru is 12 years oldand visiting from Niigata,Japan. By shinkashen, the pop-ular bullet trains, it is about 100minutes away from Tokyo orfour hours by car. She is an onlychild and has a dog named Padi.She has been staying withJason, Jennifer, Dakota andMarissa Lasslett for the pastmonth and enjoying a U.PAmerican home stay.

Upon her arrival, Haru hadthe opportunity to jump rightinto some 4-H programs and ac-tivities, such as: 4-H CloverBud Camp, 4-H Teen Camp,visiting the Garlyn Farms Zoo,4-H Rock Hounding Club andeven giving a presentation onJapanese culture to the 4-HReading Buddies program.

The family also has taken herto several areas throughout theU.P., including the St. IgnaceFish Festival, Oswald’s BearRanch, Lake Superior, GrandMarais, Paradise, WhitefishPoint, Crisp Point, several wa-terfalls, including Tahqua-menon, mouth of the Two Heartand a trip to Munising wherethey enjoyed the glass-bottomboat tour.

While here, one of Haru’s fa-vorite things to do has beenswimming. Visits to RoundLake were a common occur-rence. Time for the Lasslettfamily has flown by, and unfor-tunately, the visit will come toan end this Friday, August 21 asHaru heads back home to Japan.

4-H Teen ExperiencesJapan

Hosting a youth from anothercountry for a month opens youreyes to another culture, but hav-ing the opportunity to visit yourhost brother in his country takesthe experience to a whole otherlevel.

My son, Mitchell Edison, had

the opportunity to do this. Heleft Newberry July 8 and flew toSeattle, WA where a group of200 exchange students fromthroughout the country met fora final debriefing. The follow-ing day Mitchell headed to hisdestination of Musashi-Muriyama, Japan. It is approxi-mately one hour from Tokyoand four hours from Mt. Fuji.

Mitchell experienced somuch throughout his visit.When reunited with his host

brother, Naosuke Katano, it wasas if a year had never even goneby. He commented that the onlydifference was that “his voicehad deepened.” The Katanofamily consists of father, Hi-roshi, mother, Natsuko, sister,Ayuka, little brother, Shunsuke,and dog, Don.

While in Japan Mitchell hadthe opportunity to see the infa-mous Tokyo tower, visit Mt.Fuji, swim in the Pacific Ocean,

eat some unique foods, visit aShinto shrine, watch a table ten-nis tournament, enjoy severalfestivals, take in a couple Seibu

Lions baseball games and makemany new friends.

Mitchell returned from hismonthlong trip onAugust 6, jet-lagged but full of stories. Whilein Japan, Mitchell and Naosukediscussed how they would keepin touch and have since com-municated via phone, e-mailand now even Facebook. Nao-suke would like to return for ayearlong home stay here inNewberry. He loved Newberry

and would like to experiencemore of it.

Mitchell commented,” It wasthe coolest thing I’ve done. Iwill never forget it. I considerthe Katanos my second family.I think everyone should tryhosting a student, whether fromJapan or anywhere. I hope nowthat my friends have seen whata great time I had that they willthink about doing it, too.”

Hosting was a wonderful ex-perience for our family and onethat we will definitely be par-taking in again.

Matthew and Bethany Mar-cott have announced the birth oftheir first child, Seth Theodore,Wednesday, July 15, 2009 atMarquette General Hospital.

The baby weighed sixpounds, 11 ounces and meas-ured 19.5 inches in length.

Grandparents are Rick andDenise Marcott of Helmer andArthur and Lois Williams ofFlorida. Great-grandparents areTed and Betty Marcott ofHelmer, Bill and SharonZelinko of Florida and Gil andJune Thompson of Marlette.
