On Sunday, September 11, Broadway celebrated a Renewal of Baptism Sunday.
We welcomed 15 new members, including 8 adults who were baptized that morning, and
renewed our own baptismal vows in preparation for another year of ministry together.
Following the service, we enjoyed each other’s fellowship at a picnic on the lawn.

For October, the Karon Book Club will be reading I Shall
Not Want by Julia Spencer Flemming. This is the last of
the Rev. Clare Fergusson / Chief Russ Van Alstyne series.
We will meet at the new Osaka Buffet on John Deere
Road, formerly the Old Country Buffet, at 11:30 on
Wednesday, October 12.
I Shall Not Want
In the small Adirondack town of Millers Kill, New York, life
doesn’t stop for heartbreak. A new officer in the police
department, a breaking-and-entering, and trouble within his
own family keep Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne busy
enough to ignore the pain of losing his wife—and the
woman he loves. At St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, the
Reverend Clare Fergusson is trying to keep everyone
happy, while denying her own wounded soul. When a
Mexican farmhand stumbles over a Latino man killed with a
single shot to the back of his head, Clare is sucked into the
investigation. The discovery of two more bodies executed
in the same way ignites fears that a serial killer is loose.
Now two would-be lovers, who thought they had lost
everything, must find a way to trust each other again, as
the violence strikes ever closer to home…
Our November luncheon will be at D’Allessandro Italian
Cuisine (1524 4th Ave., Rock Island). Please note that the
date for our November meeting has been changed to
Wednesday, November 16, at 11:30. This will be the last
time we meet in 2011. The book we are reading for that
month is Making Rounds with Oscar by David Dosa, M.D.
Making Rounds with Oscar
Dosa, a geriatrician with a strong aversion to cats, tells the
endearing story of Oscar the cat, the aloof resident at a
nursing home who only spends time with people who are
about to die. Despite hearing numerous stories about
Oscar’s uncanny ability to predict when a patient’s time is
nearing, Dosa, remains skeptical. Slowly, he starts to
concede that there may be something special about Oscar.
Dosa starts to pay more attention to the cat’s decidedly
odd behavior, noticing that Oscar seeks out the dying,
snuggles with the patient and family members until the
patient passes, sits outside a closed door until admitted, or
refuses to leave a dying patient’s bed. Dosa discovers how
powerfully Oscar’s mere presence reassures frightened or
grieving family. Ultimately, the good doctor realizes that it
doesn’t matter where Oscar’s gift comes from; it’s the
comfort he brings that’s important. This touching and
engaging book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a well-
written and compelling story will find much to admire in its
unlikely hero.
We do not meet in December. The Karon Book Club will
resume meeting in January of 2012, weather permitting.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mary Cleaveland and Nomie Budelier, for healing and strength.
We pray for Adam Dobereiner, in Afghanistan, and Anne Marie in Georgia. May God keep
them safe as they serve our country.
We also pray for many blessings for Jean Appier, as she moves to Arizona.
Please note: If you or a loved one is hospitalized or scheduled for surgery, please notify the church office as soon as you are able.
