WHAT IS LIFESMARTS?LifeSmarts is a FREE educational

program that develops the consumerand marketplace skills of teenagers in afun way and rewards them for thisknowledge. The Varsity program forteens in grades 9-12 and Junior Varsityprogram for teens in grades 6-8

complement any school curriculum and can be used as an afterschool activity.This program is appropriate for public and private schools, homeschools,alternative schools as well as clubs and youth organizations.

LifeSmarts: The Ultimate ConsumerChallenge was created in 1994. It is a program ofthe National Consumers League (NCL) and isbrought to Hawaii by the State Department ofCommerce and Consumer Affairs Office of theSecurities Commissioner in partnership with theHawaii Credit Union League. VARSITY PROGRAM OVERVIEWLifeSmarts helps students learn about their

consumer rights and responsibilities and developmarketplace smarts. Varsity teams must be ingrades 9-12 and must submit a release form toparticipate at in-person competitions.

Teams are formed under the guidance of anadult coach/teacher that must register with the NCLthrough www.lifesmarts.org. A team consists ofone coach and at least four team members. Teamsfirst compete in the online competition,independently completing three levels of questionsin the following categories:

Schools and organizations may enter morethan one coach and coaches may have multipleteams in the competition. Qualifying teams in thevarsity program will advance to the state in-personcompetition. The winning team will be eligible torepresent Hawaii at the national competition.

Coaches have access to useful tools:TeamSmarts monthly team activity, LifeSmarts U’svirtual classroom, pre-test and post-test scores toassess students’ learning, on-line lessons, practicerounds of competition, scavenger hunts, fast facts, aquestion of the day calendar and much more.FCCLA and FBLA teams will be eligible foradditional prizes. JUNIOR VARSITYPROGRAM OVERVIEW

For Grades 6-8

LifeSmarts helpsprepare middle schoolstudents in grades 6-8for the consumerdecisions that they willmake throughout theirlives. By using theInternet to researchconsumer issues,students will beginexploring today’sconsumer challenges.Teams are formedunder the guidance ofan adult coach in thesame manner as theVarsity program butonly compete online inthe JV competition.Top scoring teams willbe recognized online.Seewww.lifesmarts.orgfor more informationand to register.
