What is

The Roger G. Cook Greenway?Hightstown’s Greenway has along history. In 1987, the ideafor a greenway first appearedas a way to link the town’s nat-ural and historic features; by1997 the Greenway Plan wasmoving forward as a tool forpreserving important aspectsof Hightstown for futuregenerations.

The Greenway Plan incorpo-rates three different types of greenway: Riparian Greenway -protects environmentally sensitive areas that include streamcorridors, floodplains, wetlands, and habitats for State-listedthreatened species; Greenway Linkage - connecting publicopen spaces and the four Borough parks through a greentravel corridor; Heritage Trail - protects historic landmarkslike those associated with the Camden and Amboy RailroadCorridor including the Ely House, the stone arch bridge, thedam, and areas that display the original stone “sleepers” (usedbefore wooden railroad ties).

Additionally, another important goal of a greenway is to linkcommunities together. The current greenway intends to linkwith East Windsor so that our residents and visitors can enjoyexploring more of the region’s natural beauty and areas ofhistoric interest by foot or on bicycle. On a larger scale, cre-ating a greenway in our community complements the state’sefforts to expand the amountof green acres and open spacein New Jersey.

In 2006 Phase I of thegreenway was completed anddedicated to long-term sup-porter of the greenway, RogerCook. Phase II is currentlyunderway and will soon becompleted. Thanks to the hardwork of Mr. Cook and numer-ous other volunteers, this green corridor that comestogether in the Borough’s center and extends out into itsfour corners and beyond will benefit the community andenvironment well into the future.
