PaUl KRUEGERPresident and CEO
A lot has changed for Make-A-Wish® south Dakota over the last three decades. from granting six wishes in 1984 to granting around 70 wishes a year today, we have certainly grown as a chapter. the early wishes cost around $1,000 and the average wish today is nearly $7,000.
A lot has also stayed the same in 30 years, as our goal of granting a sick child’s one heartfelt wish remains at the center of what we do. Volunteers continue to be the grassroots force to help us reach every child in south Dakota. support from individuals, businesses and events continues to allow us to grant a wish to every child who qualifies. to everyone who has been involved over the years and today, thank you!
As we celebrate our 30th anniversary throughout the year, we encourage you to visit our 30th Anniversary page on our website, which includes powerful quotes from kids and families who have received wishes as well as a timeline about our chapter.
Wish kids, wish families and volunteers: We are holding four special events to celebrate you this summer. the first was at Walk for Wishes in Rapid city on May 17 and a good time was had by all! celebration events will be held in Watertown June 14, Aberdeen July 26 and Sioux Falls september 13. You are welcome to come to whichever event works best for you. Please call us at 335.8000 for more information, and watch your mailbox.
As summer approaches, please visit our online calendar at southdakota.wish.org. With a tractor run, car show, poker runs, kids carnival, Hot Harley Nights and golf tournaments, just to name a few, there is something for everyone!
We also want to extend a special invitation to you to join us for our 14th Annual Golf Tournament and 30th Anniversary Celebration in sioux falls on July 21. this year’s event includes a concert by cMA, AcM and cMt nominated country duo Love and Theft. Please see the back cover for all of the details. We hope to pack the place to raise both awareness and significant support for our important mission.
Let’s celebrate!

MissionWe grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
Vision We are dedicated to making every eligible child’s wish come true.
on the coVer: Raena, 13, of sioux falls, and her family traveled to Atlantis this winter for her wish.
if someone had asked me what Make-A-Wish was 10 years ago, two years ago, two months ago, i would have told them it is a nice “fluff” organization. After all, what child (or grown up) wouldn’t wish to have their biggest fantasy come true?
each time that word escapes my lips now, especially in the company of the amazing Make-A-Wish staff and volunteers, i feel like i am
disrespecting them and all they have worked for as though it doesn’t matter. i say this word, repeatedly and with intentful purpose, though, because it’s the only way i know how to emphasize just how far from “fluff” Make-A-Wish actually is.
Dylan is our wish kid. she was born eight weeks early via a lifesaving emergency c-section, weighing in at 2 lbs. 5 oz. she was born with congenital heart defects and hemifacial microsomia. to date, she has undergone 13 surgeries – 11 in relationship to her microsomia, two major open-heart – and a list of known, and unknown, planned for her future. Her status of ‘Wish Kid’ occurred on March 26, 2012, and is a moment i will never forget.
We were with her cardiologist and had just been told it was time to schedule her second, and more invasive, open-heart surgery. the doctor then asked if she could refer Dylan to Make-A-Wish. Underneath all of the “fluff” that i believed Make-A-Wish to be was the more prominent and underlying stigma that a child who receives a wish is terminal. My world completely stopped and i broke.
Her doctor reassured us that wishes were intended for children with life-threatening medical conditions, not just terminal conditions, but even now, as i write this, it’s hard to
separate terminal and Make-A-Wish, as that is all i’ve known for the last 30 years. But Dylan is not terminal. she is an amazing kid with a lifelong medical journey ahead of her, and now we are blessed to have Make-A-Wish as part of her story as well.
Dylan’s second open-heart surgery took place on June 12, 2012, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. even with all of the unknowns of her surgery (Ross Procedure), the hardest part was saying goodbye to her little sister, Bergen. through most of Dylan’s medical history – appointments and surgeries, local doctors or those in other cities – Bergen has had to stay behind, and our trip to Michigan was no exception.
How do you explain and reassure a [then] five year-old that you will be coming back? that the reason she can’t come is because you need to take care of her sister without any distractions? that her sister could die? these were all conversations we had. All questions and concerns we tried to calm. But in the end, we still had to give kisses goodbye through all her tears.
it is because of those moments without Bergen in tow that Make-A-Wish is no longer a “fluff” organization to me. they gave us a gift that continues to render me speechless; has left me feeling blessed and full with no true way to explain it. it gave us a celebration as a family. it gave us lasting memories as a family. it gave us tears of joy as a family. it gave us a reason to smile, laugh, and love each other more as a family. Most importantly, it made us whole on a journey where that hasn’t always been possible, and for that we are eternally grateful. We want to say a special thank you to Ace Ready Mix and Myrl and Roy’s Paving inc. who adopted Dylan’s wish.

Volunteer
name: laurie Danforthhometown: watertown
About laurie:Married mother of three boys, 23, 21 and 20. I worked as a nurse for 30+ years and now fill my time with volunteering for multiple organizations. I enjoy traveling and follow our son who plays baseball for SDSU.
your connection with Make-A-wish? I am a wish granter and an event volunteer. I help each year with the watertown Make-a-wish event in November.
how long have you been a volunteer? I have been a trained volunteer for five years, but have been actively involved for 10 or more years.
why do you volunteer for Make-A-wish? Make-a-wish is near and dear to my heart. when I was working as a nurse at a local clinic I had the opportunity to be a part of several Make-a-wish childrens’ medical care. these children stole my heart. I also was able to participate in another child’s care most every day for a year after I was not working at the clinic. Miss Emily taught me so much about life and giving I knew I would continue to be a part of Make-a-wish for a long time. Volunteering for Make-a-wish is not work. It is fun. to see the smile on children and their family’s faces when going on a grant visit or presenting them with a wish is love beyond words.
tell us about a memorable wish experience: Every wish experience is memorable to me and they are all unique and precious. the joy and excitement on wish children’s faces when they are granted a wish is so memorable. No matter how extensive the wish, they all bring joy. I do believe being able to be part of Nicole’s wish party where she received an iPad® was breathtaking. Nicole was as excited for the party, complete with balloons and cake, and all the special guests, as she was for her wish gifts.
if you could encourage someone who is thinking about volunteering for Make-A-wish, what would you tell them? First and foremost, I would encourage anyone to take the time and attend a Make-a-wish event. there are many throughout the state. I am sure it would only take once to get hooked. Being a Make-a-wish volunteer has so many opportunities. One can be as involved as time permits for them. the opportunities and rewards are endless. Being a part of Make-a-wish South Dakota has been one of the most rewarding opportunities I have chosen. there is nothing more rewarding than the smiles on the faces of family when they are granted a wish. Volunteering for Make-a-wish is far from work. I encourage anyone who has the slightest thought they might want to be involved to make the step. you will never regret you did.
