What your support of our annual event means for the fmspCa
In 2017, you helped us raise funds to rebuild our dog runs that were in critical disrepair. Because of you, canines in our care for years to come will benefit from these improvements making a difference for thousands of dogs.
In 2018, you helped us realize a long held dream for our animals, to provide them with essential enrichment until they get their second chance for a forever home.
In 2019 the masquerade Ball proceeds will be used to resurface the flooring in our kennel areas which is in disrepair making it unsanitary for our animals with cracks and curl lines where germs and odours can fester. Replacing the kennel flooring will support clean-up regimes and help control the spread of disease throughout the kennel, including areas like feeding stations, interior and exterior turnout areas, bathing rooms, laundry areas, food prep spaces, isolation rooms, cage areas, and cat rooms. the end result? floor surfaces that are safe, sanitary, and easy to clean, while still being kind to tender paw pads for many years to come.
We are truly an animal shelter built by the community and your support of our annual Masquerade Ball directly benefits the animals in our care as well as the thousands of volunteers, families and adopters who come through our doors every year.

the fort mcmurray spCa (fmspCa) will be hosting its 4th annual masquerade Ball on saturday, october 26, 2019. the annual masquerade gala features a dinner service, complimentary welcome drink, activities, photobooth, raffle, award presentations, live and silent auctions and lots of dancing!
This formal event provides essential funding to the Fort McMurray SPCA’s programs which serve a diverse group of Wood Buffalo residents from the youngest to our seniors - connecting lives and strengthening resiliency for pet owning households across the region who rely on their non-human family members for important social and mental health supports. While our programs work to improve and enhance well-being and education through the human-animal bond, our physical shelter also provides a safe haven for homeless animals who are provided with medical intervention, enrichment, nutritious food and more as our organization works to rehome companion animals through our comprehensive adoption program. Your sponsorship strengthens a continuum of care and connection across the diverse region we call home.
our lIve auction is a unique opportunity for guests to directly impact a capital need at the shelter in which guests can contribute any amount towards the purchase of new equipment, capital improvements etc. Last year the LIVE auction raised $40,000 where every guest could pledge any amount towards the creation of our animal enrichment centre.
Every guest who made a pledge is honoured with their name on a plaque at the shelter to commemorate their generosity and impact for the fort mcmurray spCa. all businesses that support the event will have their business promoted through our popular social media networks as well as on any printed items or signage for the event. Alternatively, if you would rather receive a charitable tax receipt for the value of the donation, we would be pleased to do so.

since 1978 the fort mcmurray spCa has been the only local animal shelter in the regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, providing care and shelter for hundreds of homeless, abused, and neglected animals every year in addition to satellite services and supports throughout the entire municipality, from Fort Chipewyan to Conklin and every community in between.the fort mcmurray spCa is much more than an animal shelter – it is a hub of programming and services to strengthen and connect the lives of our community members from the youngest to our seniors and build on the important social connectors that companion animals play in our lives.
eDuCatIonWe connect with community residents through our programming which reaches our youngest citizens through our ASAP and Book Buddies Reading programs. Animal Safety and Awareness program (asap) is based on the humane education approach to teaching that inspires kindness to both animals and people. Instilling the desire and capacity to put our values into action in meaningful ways with far reaching effects is essential to building safe and caring communities. Our Book Buddies program is a reading to shelter pets program started in 2017 and is receiving rave reviews from kids, parents and teachers. Children who are able to read at any level are invited to the shelter to read to the pets in our adoption rooms. The program will help children improve their reading skills while also helping the shelter animals by providing socialization and human interaction.
health & safetyThe Animal Safe Haven Program (ASH Program) has been created to provide temporary homes to animals that are part of families fleeing abusive and violent situations or for those who for medical reasons are unable to provide care while hospitalized. It is not easy to leave an abusive or violent relationship and it can be more difficult when there is fear for the family pet. We can provide them with a shelter from the storm. Many regional rural communities experience companion animal overpopulation resulting in safety concerns and unrest amongst local residents. The FMSPCA’s ground breaking Northern Animal Management and Education (NAME) program provides solution based services that addresses humane education, animal care supplies, medical treatment and intervention as well as assists communities in establishing humane animal best practices. Currently the fort mcmurray SPCA provides support and resources through the NAME program to Fort McKay First Nation, Chipewyan Prairie Dene First Nation, the Fort Chipewyan area, Conklin and most recently Fort mcmurray first nation #468.

breakfastsoCIal WellnessWhat do cats and yogis have in common? They both love to stretch! And now they can stretch together: Introducing Fort McMurray’s first Cat Yoga Class. This Hatha Yoga course is not only healthy and fun, it also helps to socialize and enrich the lives of the shelter cats, as well as, encourages adoption by showing off the cats awesome personalities by interacting with them. A key to our success in creating a safe and caring communities are joint initiatives which allow the FMSPCA, in partnership, to provide a wide variety of essential services with greater positive impact for the region as a whole. Such programs include The Pet Food Bank created incooperation with the Wood Buffalo Food Bank whereby food bank clients are provided with pet food for their companion animals in order to assist families and individuals in caring for their pets and contributing as a preventative measure to companion animals becoming homeless.
the fmspCa also has a unique program to bring pet companionship to local seniors. our 9 Lives program pairs seniors who would like to have a pet with senior adoptable animals, usually cats, that could benefit from a home of their own. Through this program, all food and veterinary costs are provided, as well as regular check-ups to ensure everyone is enjoying the companionship. In partnership with the northern lights health foundation. Cleo, a senior cat who was not successfully being chosen for adoption, is now a happy resident on the 4th floor of the hospital where she keeps local resident seniors company. Cleo is even equipped with a special collar so that she can’t explore the other floors of the hospital, but can enjoy free range on the 4th floor. Pet companionship has a lot of benefits both for humans and pets in their golden years and the fmspCa is proud to offer this program, with support from the rmWB, that respects our seniors, both two legged and four. Recently, we have expanded our program with Wood Buffalo Housing and St. Aiden’s Society successfully placing several cats with their senior caregivers.
