7March2017,Madrid–ThefifthannualWorldATMCongressopenedthismorningatIFEMA,FeriadeMadrid.TheCongressbringstogetheraviationleaderstodiscuss,demonstrate,andpromotethelatesttechnologiesandmeasurestotransformairtrafficmanagement(ATM)performanceglobally.Thisyeararecordnumberofparticipantsareexpectedand230exhibitorshaveregisteredtoattendtheworld'slargestairtrafficmanagementevent.WorldATMCongressisproducedbytheCivilAirNavigationServicesOrganisation(CANSO)inpartnershipwiththeAirTrafficControlAssociation(ATCA),andrunsthrough9March.

"ATMisatrulyglobalbusinessthatisevolvingquicklytomeettheneedsofairnavigationserviceproviders(ANSPs),governments,frontlineusers,airlines,andpassengers.WorldATMCongressspotlightsthetechnologythatenhancesandprotectstheworld'sairspaceandbringsthousandsofstakeholderstothetable,"saidPeterF.Dumont,ATCAPresidentandCEO."WhenATCAandCANSOagreedin2011topartneronthisevent,weknewthatWorldATMCongresswouldbethepremierdestinationforaviationleadersaroundtheglobe.Ourrapidsuccessandthesuccessofourexhibitors,sponsors,andattendeesspeaktohowWorldATMCongresssatisfiesaneedinourindustry-aneedtoconnect,putfacestonames,learnfromeachother,andforgecareer-longbusinessandpersonalrelationships.Withtheinfluxofnewentrantsintooursystems,includingunmannedaircraftsystems(UAS)andcommercialspacevehicles,theconversationswehaveintheConference,intheExhibitionHall,andinthepresentationtheatresthisweekwillmoveusintothefutureofamoremodern,diverseglobalairspace.Astheairspaceevolves,sodoesourevent.AtWorldATMCongress,wedonotseeitas'thinkingoutsidethebox.'Weseeitasmakingtheboxbigger."

ÍñigodelaSernaHernáiz,Minister,MinistryofPublicWorksandTransport,Spain,officiallyopenedtheConferenceofWorldATMCongresstoday.HesaidtheSpanishgovernmenthasbeenhonouredtohosttheeventforthepastfiveyearsandispleasedthatWorldATMCongressiscontractedtoremaininMadridthrough2022.TheministersaidthegovernmentoffersitsfullsupportfortheATM

industryanditscapacitytodelivereconomicbenefits-particularlyinSpain,acountrythatcontributedmosttothegrowthofairtrafficinEuropein2016.HefollowedbyannouncingthatENAIRE-theSpanishANSP-hasproposedacumulativefeereductionof11.5percentduring2018-2020initsstrategicplan-adecreaseinenroutefeesthatcouldsaveairlinesapproximately€184mandstimulatefurtherairtrafficgrowth.

TheConferencethenexaminedhowtocreatetherightculturetoadapttoandanticipatechangeaswellasharnessingittodriveimprovedperformancethroughinnovation,collaboration,andembracingnewconceptsandtechnologies.OnWednesday,theConferencewilldiscusstheopportunitiesforcollaborationintheexchangeofinformationandwhatconsiderationswillbeneededtomanagethegrowthofUAS.
