Africa awaits...Africa awaits...

World Cup 2010 Supplement

GREAT EXPECTATIONSBy Rodney Hinds

THE STUNNING rise ofAfrican football reaches apeak on Friday, June 11.

It is the day that South Africacaptain Aaron Mokoena leadshis team out against Mexico atSoccer City in Johannesburg.

While the match will havethe world's attention the signif-icance is in the fact that an

African nation is hosting thegreatest football show on earthfor the very first time.

There have been cynics anddoubters ever since SouthAfrica landed the big prize. Butdespite that and the constantreference to the African nation'sbackdrop of violence that sitsuncomfortably with some, theshow will go on.

African footballers havegrown in importance as eachyear has gone. Their growingstatus is now underpinned bythe fact that Africa now hostsarguably the greatest sportingoccasion on the planet.

I have no doubt that it will bea spectacle both on and off thefield.

The vuvuzela, the plastictrumpet native to South Africa,is set to take centre stage - andmake a lot of noise!

When the first match kicks

off the politicians and doommerchants will hopefully besilenced and it is over to theplayers.

It would help if the hostsenjoy an extended run. Theiropening group should hold nofears.

Mokoena, who enduredagony and ecstasy at club sidePortsmouth, has enough quali-ty in his team to overcome theMexicans, Uruguayans andageing French in the firstround.

Nigeria will look to get threepoints on the board as quicklyas possible, despite their openerbeing a match up against LionelMessi's Argentina.

If the Nigerians, who havehad a woeful World Cup build-up, can overcome Argentinafirst up they could build confi-dence and momentum.

Ghana did look to have agood case of being the best

African bet. However, the lossof talisman Michael Essien toinjury will cost them. UnknownSerbia, hardworking Australiaand experienced Germanystand in their way.

They will now need the likesof captain Stephen Appiah and

Champions League winnerSulley Muntari to be at theirbest. But they are in with ashout of reaching the round ofthe last 16, which could mean apossible clash with England.

Cameroon will doubtless relyon the goals and savvy ofSamuel Eto'o in Group E. Butover the years the Africanshave gone backwards so amajor effort will be required toget to the second phase with

group favourites, Netherlands. If the Ivory Coast can get

their act together early theyhave the talent to leave anindelible mark on the tourna-ment.

As ever there will be aweight of expectancy on cap-

tain and goal poacher DidierDrogba. But other experiencedplayers such as Chelsea teammate Saloman Kalou, Seville'sDidier Zokora and the Tourebrothers will need to be firing ifthey are to escape Group Gwhich also contains Portugaland Brazil, both of whom havethe ability to get to the businessend of the World Cup.

Sadly, Algeria will have theirwork cut out to get any Group

C points on the board.Brazil and Spain will start as

favourites come June 11 andfor obvious reasons.

Brazil are pass masters, withfive World Cup wins undertheir belt, while Spain have atlast got the monkey off theirback by being crownedEuropean champions in 2008.

They both have great playerswith big match experience andthat will be key in order toreach the final on July 11.

And of course there'sEngland, one of my tips to liftthe coveted prize even if it'sjust to rid ourselves of the blackand white images of the 1966triumph!

Make no mistake WayneRooney will be pivotal. If hecan find something like hisManchester United form andget support, yes, England cando it.

Other key players will becaptain Rio Ferdinand andwouldn't it be great if a blackcaptain lifted the prize forEngland in the Motherland?

The stylish contrtibution ofLedley King, in defence or mid-field, will be important as willthe contributions of FrankLampard and the muchmaligned Ashley Cole who dur-ing the tournament willbecome the most capped blackplayer for England.

Where England fall down, for me, is in goal and shouldRooney blow a gasket or suc-cumb to injury.

Get ready to sweat as footballfever takes over for the nextmonth. It will be dramatic, exciting and no doubt a mem-orable penalty shoot out or twowill be thrown in along theway.

While I have a hankering forEngland we would discountBrazil and Argentina at ourperil.

AFRICA READY TO BE THE PERFECT HOSTS

JUMPING FOR JOY:

Ferdinand leads England

BLOWING THEIR OWN TRUMPETS:South Africa football fans

World Cup 2010 Supplement

SOUTH AFRICA Pienaar has the abil-ity to ensure

that theh o s t s

really enjoytheir own WorldCup party. The gifted Everton

player has quick feet and an evenquicker brain. If he is on song he is

likely to create a hatful of chancesfor the Bafana Bafana forwards.

Verdict: The tournament can only benefit

if the hosts can get to thebusiness end of the monthlong event. They should be

able to negotiate the opening phasebut then could possibly faceArgentina in the second round. They will need all of their support

if they come up against LionelMessi & Co. Definitely in with achance of reaching the round of thelast sixteen.

ICONIC PLAYER: Lucas RadebeThe current SA side could do withthe likes of Radebe, a calm influ-ence on and off the field. Known as‘The Chief’, Radebe earned 70 inter-national caps between 1992 -2003.The centre-half's career took offafter he joined high-flying LeedsUnited in 1994. He was vital to thewest Yorkshire during their glorydays under manager David O’Leary.

COACH: Paul Le Guen

ICONIC PLAYER: Roger Milla

A 42-year-old Milla scored against Russia in the 1994World Cup to become the tournament’s oldest goalscorer aswell as oldest player. Remembered for celebrating his goalsby dancing next to the corner flag, the striker was pivotalto a Cameroon side that reached the quarter-finals of Italia'90.

RECORD GOALS: Samuel Eto'o, 42

COACH: Lars Lagerback

STAR PLAYER:Ikechukwu Ucheplays for Real Zaragoza in Spain. He wasthe highest scorer in the World Cup qualifiers with fourgoals in ten games. He has spent his entire career in Spainstarting with Recreativo. He has pace and is always awareof what is going on around him. He could be Nigeria's sur-prise package.

ICONIC PLAYER & RECORD GOALS:Rashidi YekiniRashidi Yekini is Nigeria's all time top scorerwith 37 goals in 70 games. His goals helpedNigeria to win the African Cup of Nations fora second time in 1994. He scored a remarkable90 goals for Vitoria Setubal of Portugal in 108games! A class act - how the current SuperEagles could do with his predatory instincts!

Verdict: The team is virtually the same as that selectedby Amodu Shaibu's - who was in charge ofNigeria's qualifying games. The defence is alot more disciplined, but I cannot see themprogressing past the second round. They willneed to make a good start against Argentina ifthey are to progress.

STAR PLAYER: IdrissCarlos KameniArguably the best blackgoalkeeper in the world,Kameni has been theIndomitable Lions’ first-choice shot-stopper sincehe was a teenager. Now aseasoned La Liga veteranfor Espanyol, the 26-year-old will literallyhave his hands full tryingto prevent goals leakingthrough Cameroon'sfragile defence. He is bigand brave and if he is onsong he could help hiscountry to the secondround at least. His expe-rience will be crucial.

Verdict: Cameroon struggled in qualifying until the arrival of formerRangers manager Paul Le Guen. Escaping from Group E is notimpossible, but it will not be easy. Expect Holland to comfortablytop Group E - should they play to their potential - with Denmarkand Cameroon battling for second place. Beyond that a secondround elimination looks likely for a team that have an overreliance on Eto’o’s goals and experience.

GHANARoute to the World Cup: CAF Group D winners

I've got a funny feelingwe may be talking moreabout the goalkeeperthan anything else espe-cially as he is set tohang up his gloves atthe end of the tourna-ment! But because noone wants to hear aboutthe goalie (sad but true)the one to watch is mostlikely to be KwadwoAsamoah. After his firstfull season in Serie A,following many sensa-tional performances forUdinese, he has beenlinked with Juventusand his valuation hasbeen set at 30 millioneuros by Udinese.

ICONIC PLAYER & RECORD GOALS:Abedi PeleAbedi Pele will forever be one of the most cel-ebrated Ghanaian players to don the BlackStars shirt. African Footballer of the Yearthree years on the spin from 1991, Pele gracedthe Italian, German and French leagues scor-ing a hatful of goals in each. He scored scored33 goals in 67 appearances for Ghana. Theterm legend is often used in football; Abedi iscertainly worthy of the word.

Verdict: Ghana have a good team but I fear defending maybewhere they let themselves down. The loss of key manMichael Essien is massive. Concentration is one of thebiggest assets a team can have come World Cup time, you can lose the game in a moment. Looking at theirdefenders, I'm not filled with the greatest hope thatthey can keep the more organized teams at bay.

Rooney has the touchand awareness tochange a game with amoment of brilliance.Comfortable as bothmarksman and provider, the 24-year-old hasblossomed into thecomplete front man.England's aspirationsweigh heavily on hisshoulders and Capellomust hope Rooney cancomplete his first fully-fit major tournament. But injury blighted theend of his 2009-10campaign and all ofEngland hope that hehas fully recovered.

ICONIC PLAYER: Bobby Moore England's only World Cup-winning captain earned 108 capsand lead England to 1966 glory at only 24. The West Ham cen-tre-back cemented his reputation as an adroit reader of thegame when he cleanly dispossessed the galloping Jairzinhowhen England met Brazil at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.

Verdict: Doubts remain about England's ability to stringtogether victories over the bigger nations, but if theywin Group C they are likely to avoid the big boysuntil the semi-finals. Progress to the last four is byno means a given but it is a serious aim for Capello'smen.

SOUTH AFRICA is readyfor the influx of theworld's media and last

month BBC Sport announcedits squad who will provideextensive coverage of the2010 World Cup across TV,radio and online.

The Lipstick Opinion onSport took up the invite to theBBC's unveiling of their squadmembers at the White Citystudios in west London.

The line-up is lead by MrMatch of the Day, presenterand former England captainGary Lineker, who like a fine

wine gets better with age.Lineker had this to say onEngland manager FabioCapello.

“Fabio Cappello has made apositive impact both on andoff the pitch in terms of disci-pline within the squad.”

Also likely to make animpact on the players is SouthAfrica's altitude. “For Englishplayers this is a real issue, ifyou're from South Americaand some of the other conti-nents you'll be used to play-ing in such a high tempera-ture but if we can at least playa proper high tempo game itwill give us some sort

chance,” said Lineker whoplayed 80 times for England.

Some of the other membersof the BBC Sport team arefamiliar studio experts includ-ing Alan Hansen and formerEngland internationals AlanShearer and Martin Keown.

There will be two new con-

noisseurs adeptly chosen bythe BBC, Dutch masterClarence Seedorf currently atAC Milan, who is the onlyplayer to have won theChampions League with threedifferent clubs.

Alongside Seedorf will beTogolese Emmanuel Adebayor

who was voted AfricanFootballer of the Year for2008, he is currently a strikerfor Manchester City.

He played in the same posi-tion for the Togo nationalteam before he announced hisretirement from internationalfootball in April 2010.

As the first ever AfricanWorld Cup, this competitionhas a special significance andwill be much more than whathappens on the playing field.

The BBC aims to capture theimpact of the tournament onthe people of South Africa.

We can expect in-depthcoverage at the highest level

from roving reporters includ-ing Garth Crooks and DamianJohnson.

Co-commentator MarkBright will be part of thedream team that gives usnews and reports from aroundSouth Africa, supplying a realtaste of the rich history andculture of the nation.

South Africa World Cup2010 resonates deep withinblack people across the globe;from the end of apartheid andwatching Nelson Mandelawalk free from prison, toMandela becoming the firstblack president of SouthAfrica.

The Motherland welcomes Lineker & Co.

BRAZILThis question isn't usually as tough whereBrazil are concerned, the star is usuallyobvious, not so this year. I feel after a sub-dued season Kaka will struggle to illumi-nate proceedings. Elano however, (remem-ber him?) will be the guy to watch. He'sfound his confidence again out in Turkeyand has always had the mark of quality.

ICONIC PLAYER & RECORD GOALS: Pele The dream will become reality when his nationtake to the South African pitch in their firstgame against South Korea. Arguably the great-est player of all time, Pele - 77 goals for hiscountry -will be beaming with pride at the sightof the Motherland playing host to the greatestfootball tournament on the planet.

Verdict: Can anyone remember a World Cup where Brazil couldn't win it? Blessed withsupreme talent and confidence this year’s tournament will be no different. They don'tstart as favourites but semi-finals is a must. If they make it to that point, it's theirs forthe taking. The lack of an in-form star may just galvanise their collective efforts.

No other player is moreindividually important toa country than Drobga isto Ivory Coast. TheChelsea striker was againprolific for the Blues thisseason as they crusied toa historic Double. The bigman will be looking tocontinue his club form forhis country this summer.Able to create somethingout of nothing, his pres-ence is a nuisance fordefenders. He has 42goals for the Elephants.

ICONIC PLAYER: Bonaventure Kalou A goalscorer in Ivory Coast's last World Cup matchagainst Serbia, Bonaventure - older brother of Salomon- has predominantly played in France and Holland.Effective either on the wing or in attack, Bonaventurewas a part of the Feyenoord squad that beat BorussiaDortmund to lift the UEFA Cup in 2002.

Verdict: Having once again been drawn in the 'Groupof Death' Ivory Coast will have gained heartfrom their last World Cup campaign in 2006.Beating Brazil will be an uphill task butupsetting Portugal is a genuine possibility asThe Elephants, unlike Portugal, have genuineworld-class strikers in Salomon Kalou andDidier Drogba.
