Quite for a long time, her wheel house and masts were visible in the seabut with the passage of time nothing left on the surface. Now she restsat a depth of 14 metres near a coral reef providing shelter to thousandsof fishes in the form of an artificial reef. Marine life in this wreck site isplenty which makes it popular choice for visiting divers.S.S.Inchkeith had a long history and changed her name several timeswith change of ownership. First she was launched as SS BarbaraMarieon 15th Feb.1923 by Priestman & Co. in Southwick England and laterrenamed as SS Portsea till she was sold to an Italian shipping company.Shewas named S.S.Cipro and continued with this name from 1933 to1937 inthe Port of Naples (Italy) as her home port. Again she was sold to anotherItalian company and renamed as S.S.Stella. She served with this companyfrom 1937 to 1941 till she fell victim to the second world war. She wascaptured by British warship HMS Circassia at Cape Verde Islands andtaken to Bermuda( a British overseas territory). She served as empire shipunder the Ministry of War Transport, London bearing the name-S.S.EmpirePlanet till 1947.Later she was sold to a Hong Kong based company and was plying in theIndian waters carrying coal and logs from one port to another. The Cellular Jail - once the prison built by the British rulers at Port Blair where countless martyrs of India's Independence
struggle laid down their lives, is now a National Memorial. The jail is named 'Cellular Jail' because it comprises of single
cells where the convicts were kept in darkness. They were not allowed to meet the other prisoners and had to face
barbarian tortures of the British rulers. The National Memorial exhibits help us to realize and feel the agonies of the
Indian freedom fighters severely tortured by the Jail rulers.
From being a mute witness to the tortures meted out to freedom fighters, the jail has come to be a hallowed place of
pilgrimage for all freedom loving patriot souls. The convicts were transported to serve the sentence of "KaalaPani" or
solitary confinement in the once notorious and now of historical importance, the Cellular Jail. Near the compound wall to
the right of the main entrance were the gallows, capable of hanging three persons simultaneously with a separate door in
the outer compound wall for removing the corpses. The Jail has been converted into a National Memorial by the then
Prime Minister, Shri Morarji Desai on 11th February, 1979.
Cellular Jail - the story rewind v Dr. Pronob Kumar Sircar
Today the entrance block of the National Memorial houses Freedom
Fighters' photos and exhibition gallery in the ground floor. The first floor
of the building has an Art Gallery, Netaji Gallery and a Library on
Freedom Movement. Gallery on First war of Independence and Old
Photographs Gallery have also been set up in the premises of the National
Memorial. An eternal flame of Freedom-SwatantraJyoti has been erected
in the premises of the Jail in memory of all the freedom fighters and
martyrs.
Architectural Background
Cellular Jail completed in 1906 is entirely made up of individual cells
(measuring 13.5 feet x 7 feet with an iron grill door) meant for the solitary
confinement of the prisoners. A prisoner had to waggle himself within
his own four walls. This massive puce colored building was once a seven
-pronged structure with honeycombed corridors and a central rectangle
tower serving as its fulcrum. Currently only three of its seven prongs are
intact. Spread as seven spokes of a bicycle wheel, this unique three-
storied structure was the first of its kind in India. The 663 cells in the jail
were specially built for solitary confinement of the prisoners. In the center
of the Seven wings of the Cellular Jail, a Central tower in rectangle
shape was built. Thus a single guard on duty could supervise all the
seven wings from his vantage position.
History in briefThe Cellular Jail was the shadiest pr ison of the British rule in India.
The Indian Mutiny of 1857 forced the Britishers to establish a fresh
penal settlement in March 1858 after the failure of the first penal
settlement (1789-1796) in the Islands which was administered by a British
Superintendent. This designation was converted into Chief Commissioner
in 1872. Edward Horace Man, son of Colonel Man raised the Union
Jack at Port Blair on 22nd Jan, 1858, when the second settlement was
founded.
The initial and original object of establishing a settlement in Andamans
was to provide a safe haven for vessels during storms. A regular settlement
in the Islands was considered as the only remedy for the security of the
vessels plying in the region. The first attempt to colonize these Islands
was made in the year 1789 when a colony was established on Chatham
Island by Captain Archibald Blair. This settlement was later moved to
Port Cornwallis in North Andaman, the idea being that it would eventually
become a naval base. This scheme did not, however, materialize, and
the colony was closed in the year 1796.
The question of establishing a permanent
colony in the Andamans as a place of refuge
for the crews of ships wrecked on the coasts was
again mooted some sixty years later; but the
present Penal Settlement was actually
established in the year 1858 for the
accommodation of the vast numbers of prisoners
resulting from the quelling of the First War of
Indian Independence of 1857 in order to isolate
them from the mainland India.
The modern history of Andaman and Nicobar
Islands begins with the bringing in of 200
mutineers of 1857 on 10th March, 1858
marking the beginning of 2nd penal settlement
in the Islands. All life and long-term prisoners,
who on some grounds have escaped the death
penalty in India and Burma, were selected for
transportation to the penal settlement of
Andaman Islands.
The first batch of 200 freedom fighters of the
First War of Independence landed in the
Andaman and Nicobar Islands on 10th March
1858, marking the beginning of the penal
settlement. All life and long-term prisoners, from
Taro or dasheen corms possess more calories than potatoes. 100
grams of root provides 112 calories. Their calorie value chiefly comes
from complex carbohydrates, amylose and amylopectin.
Nonetheless, the roots are very low in fats and protein than in cereals
and pulses. Their protein levels can be comparable to that of other
tropical food sources like yam, cassava, potato, plantain, etc.
The corms, however, are free from gluten protein. They carry high-
quality phyto-nutrition profile comprising of dietary fiber, and
antioxidants in addition to moderate proportions of minerals, and
vitamins.
Taro is one of the finest sources dietary fibers; 100 g flesh provides
4.1 g or 11% of daily-requirement of dietary fiber. Together with
slow digesting complex carbohydrates, moderate amounts of fiber
in the food help gradual rise in blood sugar levels.
Yellow-fleshed roots and young, tender leaves have significant levels

Being primarily an agricultural country the growth and development of
Indian economy particularly depend upon steady growth of agriculture and
other allied activities.
The task of an agricultural engineer is to improve agricultural production
by means of better engineering methods, inventions, technology and
equipment which also require a good intellect and a desire to make a
difference to the future of farming. Improvement in agricultural farm
machinery, farm structures, rural electrification, bio-gas, new technologies
in the design and manufacture of agricultural products and also conservation
of soil and water are some of the jobs handled by an agricultural engineer.
Course DetailsThe basic eligibility criteria for a candidate aspiring to do a BE in Agricultural
Engineering is 10+2, with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and preferably
Biology. To become a qualified Agricultural Engineer one must have a
graduate degree (B.E / B.Tech) or at least a diploma in Agricultural
Engineering. BE / B.Tech Agriculture courses are of 4 years' duration while
the diploma courses are of 2-3 years' duration.
Selection to all Agricultural Engineering courses is on the basis of joint
entrance exam (JEE) for the IIT's and separate state level and national level
exams for other institutions. After completion of BE/B.Tech one can pursue
M.Tech in Agriculture which includes study like crop process engineering,
firm machinery and power, soil and water conservation etc. A Ph.D. degree
of three years is also offered at IIT kharagpur, and Indian Agricultural
Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi.

eighteen to forty years of age, who on some grounds have escaped the death penalty in India and Burma, were selected
for transportation to the penal settlement of Andaman Islands. Though the First War of Independence was quelled, the
everlasting flame for achieving freedom could not be put out. Freedom Fighters taking part in the Wahabi Movement,
participants of Manipur Revolt, and a large number of Burmese from Tharawadda, who had revolted against British
rule, were also transported to the penal settlement in the Andaman.
A two member Commission consisting of. C.J. Lyall, Surgeon of Bengal Civil Service and Major A.S. Lethbridge was
constituted in January 1890 with the direction to submit a detailed report on the working of the penal settlement of Port
Blair. After their inspection, the Commission submitted their report to the Government on 26th April 1890.The Commission
found that the system has contributed immensely towards reformation of transported prisoners. However, they expressed
great dissatisfaction over the prevailing conditions in Andamans and reported that the restrictions imposed upon the
prisoners in the Andamans were much less severe than those in Indian jails and therefore recommended that the prisoners
in the Andamans must pass through a much harder life, at least during the initial stages. They specifically recommended
that prisoners should be confined during the first six months in solitary cells in a jail to be specially built for the purpose
in order to maintain in it a degree of discipline till then unknown in Port Blair. This was the genesis of the construction of
the Cellular Jail, once the symbol of British oppression and today a National Memorial.
The work of jail construction was taken up in the year 1896 on the basis of Order No. 423 dated 30th September, 1896
issued by the then Administration. This order was issued by Col. NMT Horsford, Superintendent of Port Blair. The construction
of Cellular Jail was completed in 1906, when Sir Richard Temple was the Chief Commissioner. The earth quake of 1941
and the Japanese invasion followed by occupation of this territory by them caused substantial damage to the Jail building
resulting in the demolition of 4 out of its 7 wings. When the islands fell into the hands of Japanese from 23rd March, 1942
to 7th October, 1945, the prisoners and other suspected citizens were thrown under their barbarous inhuman methods.
The conditions in the Cellular Jail were far too worse than other jail tortures of that time. Many of them had been shot
dead and buried in common graves. The "Humphrey Gunj Martyrs Memorial" 15 kms from Port Blair today stands as a
mute witness to the inhuman treatment meted out to the elite of Andaman by the Japanese on mere ground of suspicion.
The forms of labour for the political prisoners were actually intended to function as the forms of torture. The political
prisoners were required to produce a daily quota of thirty pounds of coconut oil, ten pounds of mustard oil-- targets that
were beyond the physical capacity of all .Dire punishment followed for those who failed to meet the quotas. Punishment
was barbaric. Torture and flogging were frequently resorted to on the flogging stand. Sack cloth uniforms, unhygienic
diet, bar fetters, crossbar fetters, neck ring shackles, leg irons and chains were other deterrents for those who refused to
submit to the brutal Warders. The punishment varied from handcuffs for a week and fetters for six months to solitary
confinement. In the crowded, filthy, damp environment of the Cellular Jail, facing the brutalities of the Jail officials, and
the soul shattering labour, political prisoners continued their struggle with their slogans for freedom. The bleak desolation
of prison life, the stifling atmosphere of cells, resounding with the clank of chains, curses and abusive epithets of the
warders was enough to unnerve even the hardiest of them.
What makes this jail a sacred spot is the fact that some of India's most distinguished freedom fighters and charismatic
personalities were incarcerated here. The list includes the Savarkar brothers, MotilalVerma, Babu Ram Hari,
PanditPermanand, Ladha Ram, UllaskarDutt, Barin Kumar Ghosh, Bhai Parmanand, InduBhushan Roy, Prithvi Singh
Azad, Pulin Das, TrailokyanathChakravarthy, Gurumukh Singh, among others. Group of revolutionaries charged in the
Alipore Bomb Case, Nasik Conspiracy Case, Lahore Conspiracy Case, Chittagong Armoury Raid Case, Inter-Provincial
Conspiracy Case, Gaya Conspiracy Case, Bathua Action and Conspiracy Case, etc. were brought to the Cellular Jail for
long terms of rigorous imprisonment. It is the association of these names that makes this Jail a truly National Memorial.

Career Prospects
Agricultural Engineers have bright career
prospects. Upon graduating or post-graduating
in Agriculture and allied sciences, the options
and opportunities of a career are many. State
Department of Agriculture recruits Agricultural
Engineers as agricul tural officers for the
development of agriculture in a district. There
are also private fi rms investing money in
medicinal crops and plantation crops who
generally recruit agricultural engineers.
Some agricultural engineers can look towards
NGOs working in rural areas. Those interested
in research activities can join IARI as junior
fellow researcher and become agricultural
scientists. Now banks giving advance credit and
loans to agriculture and agri-based projects are
also employing agricul ture experts for
evaluation of crops. Teaching agriculture and
allied subjects is also an option available to these
students . Moreover some down to earth
agricultural engineer can also engage them in
innovative farming.
