8/14/2019 Young Inventor Competition 2010 Report
1/2
The objective of Young Inventor Competition is to encourage innovation and implementation of technology in
solving real-life problems. Through this competition we hope to raise students interest in engineering and hence
nurturing the future generation of the profession.
The information Day was successfully held on 7 November 2009
marking the launch of the competition. More than a hundred students
and teachers attended the
meeting. Mr. K S Szeto and
Ir K K Lo of IMechE Hong
Kong Branch, Ir Barry Lee of
HKIE MMNC shared their
views on innovation and
technology application with
the audiences. The
competition rules were then
explained and sample

help of IMechE Young
Members Mr. Andy Cheung
and Mr. Titus Tam.Demonstration of prototype units
Ir. K K Lo talked about the key design
aspects that contestants should pay
attention to during Info Day
Round 1 - Hydraulic Robot Arm
Information Day
This competition was separated
into two rounds. The first round
was held on 5 December 2009 at
the foyer of Hong Kong Polytechnic
University. There was a record-
breaking 40 teams competed on the
day.
The theme of Round 1 was
Hydraulic Robot Arm. Contestantsdesigned robot arms that were
actuated by hydraulic pistons and
was allowed 3 minutes to transfer
paper cups filled with water from
one place to another. The team
which collects the largestvolume of water win in the
efficiency category while
there were also an
innovative category which
was awarded to the most
creative design.
Sing Yin Secondary School
led in the efficiency
category after the round
while Aberdeen Technical
Schools Robot Arm scored
the highest mark in the
innovation category.
Radio
Television
Hong Kong (RTHK) TV
crew came and shot the
event on the day and
also interviewed Mr. W
K Chow, Chairman of
IMechE Hong Kong
Branch. The programme
was broadcasted to
public on television one
week after.

The Final Round of the competition
was successfully held on 30 January
2010 at Olympic Square, Hong Kong
Park. Students of 40 teams from 20
secondary schools competed over
their inventions attracted more than
100 spectators to the game, making
a remarkable day in the engineering
profession in Hong Kong.
The theme of the final round of the
competition is Human-Powered
Water Pump. Contestants have to
pump as much water as possible to
a bucket on a one-meter high
platform within 2
minutes. Not only
competing students
indulged into the
game, supporters also
cheer nervously for
their teams. Cheering
is all over the field.
We
congratulate
all winning
teams. As a large-scale
comprehensive
competition, "Young
Inventors Competition
2010" has played a positive
role in encouraging young
people to apply creativity
in problem solving, and
also help promote the
development of Hong Kong's
mechanical engineering sector.
The chief organising party Institute
of Mechanical Engineers Hong Kong
Branch feel proud of the competition
and also set a good paradigm for
Hong Kong Institution of Engineers
Mechanical, Marine, Naval
Architecture and Chemical Division,
which is the chief organiser of the
next session.
