It’s hard to believe that we have been
publishing Your Canvey and Your Benfleet
& Hadleigh magazines for 4 years now! To
celebrate this achievement we have made a
few alterations to our design layout in order
to bring you a fresher look and an even better
publication - we hope you like the changes!
Our overall aim is to bring you a magazine
that you can use as a directory of local
businesses and community services. The
handy A5 size makes it ideal to keep and
refer to over and over again. What we say is
“Read The Rest, But Keep The Best!”
You can read past copies of the magazine
along with an archive of all the articles we
have ever included on our website at
www.yourlocalmags.co.uk
Our website is the same high quality as our
magazines and includes much more
information than we can print each month.
You can find out What’s On in the area, read
about local businesses, read about local
history and much more. If you have an event
or community group you would like us to

“Keeping Socialising Social” - that’s the message from the Castle Point Pubwatch, a group of 33 Bars, Pubs & Clubs across Castle Point.
What is the Castle Point Pubwatch?
In essence, the Pubwatch is similar to a
Neighbourhood Watch but instead of local
residents forming a network group, our group
members are local businesses (licensed
premises) working together to keep
troublemakers out of our pubs and bars, and
reduce anti-social behavior and crime.
The Pubwatch is currently Chaired by Alun
Johnson of the Windjammer, Canvey Island
and the Vice Chair is Julie Wheatley of
Riley’s Snooker in Benfleet. The Treasurer is
Janet Woolcock from the CK Bar, Canvey
Island.
What we do!
The Pubwatch consists of managers,
supervisors & owners of licensed venues who
aim to promote the positive attributes to
drinking alcohol and socialising in Bars, Pubs
& Club across the Borough.
Working with Essex Police & Castle Point
Council, we share information on
troublemakers and activities that are likely to
lead to or promote crime & anti-social
behavior in licensed venues, making them
safer and more enjoyable for the majority
who just want to socialise and enjoy
themselves.
BOBB (Behave or Be Banned)
A scheme to ban violent offenders from
Bars, Pubs & Clubs in Castle Point. The
Behave or Be Banned scheme was launched
to reduce the number of violent or public
order incidents in the area and stop offenders
from entering licensed premises.
The decision on whether to ban people and
for how long is made by the Pubwatch
committee and any venue can nominate a
person for consideration for a ban.
Individuals being arrested for violent
offences at licensed premises will
automatically be referred to the Pubwatch by
the Police for consideration.
We want you to get in touch!
The Pubwatch has launched a brand new
website which contains lots of information
for local residents. Our news section is
updated regularly, delivering information
directly to you and you can also use the ‘Get
in Touch’ contact form to send us your
comments and feedback.
If you have any comments, concerns or
feedback relating to any member premises
you can contact the Pubwatch directly and in
confidence by a dedicated pubic email
address [email protected]
or visit our brand new website at

Dare You Enter The Museum? You may have seen a scary group of
characters recently at the Canvey Carnival or
Castle Point Show. Well, this Halloween
they will be back on Canvey Island in an
innovative new experience at the Castle
Point Transport Museum.
Castle Point Ghost Tours is the brainchild of
Islanders Mike Hewitt and Lee Goodwin and
is based on a type of entertainment popular
in the United States known as “Scarefest.”
The idea of such attractions is to provide the
experience of journeying through a haunted
location and organisers use many different
techniques to achieve this goal.
Mike and Lee first hit upon the idea of
hosting what they call a “Haunt” after Lee’s
first visit to America where he experienced
one of the many multi-million dollar
experiences available in the theme parks
there. They both have experience in makeup,
props, sound and video production and
wanted to bring a terrifying new haunted
attraction to the UK. They immediately
thought of the Castle Point Transport
Museum as the perfect location as it is one
of the oldest commercial buildings on
Canvey Island.
A cast of over 20 people will be appearing in
the event which will run from 27th to the
30th October. The actors will be in elaborate
costumes, masks and prosthetics. As well as
the main haunt, a number of attractions
suitable for all the family will be available
on the Museum forecourt including a Coffin
Experience, Local Ghost Stories told on one
of the Museum Buses and Trick or Treat
Doors.
A less terrifying version of the Haunt will be
performed on the 28th, 29th and 30th
October that is suitable for under 12s and
although children will not be allowed in the
main Haunt after 7pm there will still be
plenty going on in the forecourt to see and
do up until 22:00

Community News - The Art Ministry
The Art Ministry, a registered charity based in Hadleigh, has recently been involved in artistic activities outside its dedicated art room.
The charity ran a very successful art
competition for Year 6 pupils from local
junior schools to produce a picture for the
local Mayor's Parlour. The schools were
invited to enter works of art, depicting
anything relevant to the Castle Point area, and
were exhibited in the Atrium at Castle Point
Council Offices. The Mayor, Jackie Govier,
and her Deputy chose the two winning
pictures which have been framed and hung in
her parlour. The Mayor presented a certificate
to the winners from Holy Family School and
Hadleigh Junior School.
The Art Ministry runs clubs, classes and
projects in arts and crafts to bring out the
creativity in people. Some of the people who
would most benefit by what The Art Ministry
has to offer are unable to attend the organised
classes in the art room. They are too elderly or
too sick to make the journey, so volunteers of
The Art Ministry begun visiting Parklands
Nursing Home in Benfleet to bring art and
crafts to them. This started with a simple
collage and has progressed to clay, paint,
pattern and model making. Already, with the
help of The Art Ministry, the residents are
brightening the walls of the nursing home
with lively displays. This is an exploratory
project and The Art Ministry hopes that their
Outreach work will continue to extend to
other places in time.
The Art Ministry is currently organising a
project for the 2012 Olympics, based on
three of the Olympic and Paralympics
values: respect, friendship and equality.
The charity aims to bring together the
elderly and the young, who often live
almost worlds apart.
Over the next 12 months, the students of
Cornelius Vermuyden School on Canvey
Island will have the opportunity get to know
their neighbours - the elderly residents of
Sweetbriars Sheltered Housing Complex.
The elderly will be able to share their life
stories with the young and the young will be
able to teach their elderly friends the means
of modern communication, including
mobile phones, e-mail and skype.
At the end of the project in July 2012 there
will be an exhibition of work resulting from
the project, booklets about some of the
residents of Sweetbriars, a collage for their
lounge, and a scrapbook to tell the story of
the residents’ and students’ adventures
together.
The Art Ministry continues to explore
new opportunities within the community,
caring through creativity.

Top Tips To Get Some Peace Into Your Life In A Hectic World
In 21 days you can create a new habit which
you can fall back on at any time you need
peace. Don’t worry, you don’t have to calm
your buzzing mind, you just acknowledge
the mental chatter, slow your breathing and
bit by bit, the relaxation comes.
Come to one of my one day massage and reflexology courses in Hadleigh!
You’ll have some great treatments and learn
to give your nearest and dearest a lovely
relaxing treatment. All the students
comment how calming it is to treat someone
else too!
I hope these tips are useful. Do try one or
two and please get in touch on 01702
558623 if I can help more.
Sometimes it seems that everywhere we turn there’s stress, doom and gloom. I don’t want this to be part of my life: it gets me down, lowers my energy, rubs off on other people and affects my home and work. So, here are my best tips for getting some joy and peace back into your life, quickly and
easily.
Turn off the news It will bring your energy
down and do you need to know all the details
of the suffering in the world? I suggest you
are aware but not inundated which avoids
drowning in everyone else’s misery. My
brother in law takes this to an extreme.
Get outdoors in nature We’re blessed
with lovely quiet countryside and beautiful
woods just a few minutes away. Walk slowly;
listen to the noise of the birds, the leaves!
Slow down! I once read that slowing down
your walking to half your normal pace was
good once in a while. It’s really hard to do but
makes you notice things around you. When on
holiday recently, my roommate was
astonished when out on a 6am walk with me,
we saw humming birds! She never saw them
when she was alone as she was always
walking fast and on her phone!
A little exercise helps release endorphins,
balances your stress hormones and gives you a
natural high. Even a stretch in the chair at
work or home helps.
Breathe! Yes, slow that down too. Take
some deep breaths. This will oxygenate your
body, get the good stuff flowing around and
give you time to catch your thoughts.
Learn to meditate There are numerous
courses available online or locally. I love the
Chopra Centre 21 day meditation challenge.

Are you looking to raise funds for
your non-profit organisation?
Local businesswoman Marion Irving brings a
brand new concept to the Castle Point area
with the “Peel2Save Card” aimed at raising
funds for charities and good causes.
The Peel2Save fund raising card is a no-risk
way for charities, churches, schools, sports
clubs, youth groups and other non-profit
organisations to raise much needed money.
Peel2Save provides a great opportunity for
them to raise money quickly and easily, with
no risk. If they sell just 100 cards they will
have raised £500 and selling 1,000 cards
would give them £5,000 – which would make
quite an impact on anyone’s fund raising
target.
The credit card-sized Peel2Save cards fit
neatly into a purse or wallet and contain 64
individual peel-off coupons with each coupon
promoting money-saving offers and discounts
from a great local business.
The Peel2Save card is now available and is
valid for 12 months. It contains many great
offers from 27 different local businesses, with
the value of the offers well over the £300

October in History
14th October 1066
The Battle of Hastings took place on the
14th October 1066. It was one of the
bloodiest and most important battles to be
fought in Britain. The fighting began at
about 9am and lasted for most of the day.
The battle was fought to keep / win the
English throne with Harold, King of
England, fighting hard to keep the throne
against his opposition William of Normandy,
leader of the Normans.
The two armies met at Senlac Hill which is
about six miles from Hastings and King
Harold was killed. It is believed he was shot
through the eye with an arrow. The defeat of
King Harold led to the beginning of the
Norman Conquest of England.
An abbey was subsequently built on the
battleground and the settlement of “Battle”
formed. A plaque marks the spot where King
Harold is thought to have fallen. The famous
Bayeux Tapestry (above) depicts the events
leading up to and including the Battle of
Hastings and is currently exhibited in a
special museum in Bayeux, France.
31st October
Today is Halloween - one of the oldest
festivals celebrated in the world today.
Halloween has been described as “a perfect
example of superstition struggling with
religious belief.” The festival dates back
thousands of years.
Halloween dates back over 2000 years to the
ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. October
31st was the Celts’ New Years Eve as they
celebrated the end of what they called the
“season of the sun” before the “season of
darkness” started on 1st November. The
Celts believed that evil spirits came with the
darkness and that on October 31st the
barriers between our world and the spirit
world were at their weakest.
On this day, the Celts would build sacred
bonfires where people would gather to burn
crops and animals as sacrifices to the Gods to
protect them from the evil spirits. During
these ceremonies costumes made from
animal skins would be worn.
The first Christian missionaries travelling
across pagan Europe avoided changing the
ancients ways but incorporated the beliefs
into Christian ideology. In the ninth century,
the Catholic church made the 1st November
“All Saints Day” when all the saints would
be remembered. “Hallows” is an old word for
Saint, hence October 31st became All
Hallows Eve, which evolved to “All Hallows
Eve” and then Hallowe’en, or as we use it
today - Halloween.

This month, Michael Clark (Registered Osteopath, Nutrition & Holistic Lifestyle Coach) discusses top tips for healthy digestion.
Digestion is the process whereby we extract
nutrients from the food and liquid we
consume and eliminate waste. Poor digestion
and digestive disorders are now very common.
However there is much that can be done to
improve digestion and in turn our health,
energy and overall well-being.
Choose healthy food options
Choosing what we put in our mouth is one of
the first stages of digestion. With busy
lifestyles it can be difficult to make the best
food choices. My advice is ‘buy the best you
can afford’ and ‘be prepared.’ Buying fresh
seasonal fruit and vegetables, free range
meats, wild caught fish and organic whenever
possible will ensure you are getting high
nutrient values along with little/no unwanted
chemicals. We are spoilt for choice in Essex
we can buy our food from Organic delivery
companies that deliver to our door, local
butchers, local fishmongers, and local farms
and farmers markets as well as online
companies. By taking steps such as preparing
meals and snacks the night before, making
food in batches and freezing it and
looking up where to buy fresh produce
when travelling will help ensure you are
not forced into a situation where you
have no choice but to eat poor quality
food.
Avoid processed food
In our modern diet, inexpensive
processed foods are convenient and
freely available, however they are often
full of sweeteners, artificial colourings,
flavourings and preservatives, cheaply
processed fats and synthetic vitamins.
Extensive research has shown that processed
foods/chemicals 1. Can be broken down in the
body to toxic molecules. 2. Can cause
undesirable biological effects 3. Your body
may treat it as a foreign invader and release
powerful antibodies which can cause tissue
harm. 4. The nutrient values are often so low
that your body is unable to run is normal
healthy biological systems such as digestion,
immune function etc.
Avoid Common food allergies
Food allergies and/or sensitivities are a
common reason for poor digestion. Anyone
can have an allergy to almost anything. Some
of the most common include: Pasteurised
Milk and Dairy, Soy and Wheat (Gluten).
Avoiding these completely for 30 days will
help determine if you have a food allergy.
Don’t overcook your meats
Meat becomes progressively more difficult to
digest the more they are cooked. Free range
and organic free range meats have much lower
risks than mass produced meat. The largest
risk group of meat is undercooked burgers and
chicken. However there is a vast difference
between having meat ‘well done’ versus
cooked to the point of destroying any nutrients
and making them very difficult to digest.

The importance of water for healthy
digestion
To digest food once it enters into our stomach
you need to have adequate stomach acid to
further breakdown food and conversely you
need to have a healthy protective mucus
stomach lining. Large scale studies have
tested the acid levels (pH) of those
experiencing symptoms of heartburn,
indigestion, and GERD and contrary to
popular belief the stomach acidity is often
INSUFFICENT and they have an
INADEQUATE protective stomach lining.
Dehydration has been shown to be a major
factor in causing this imbalance. Our entire
digestive tract requires plenty of water to
enable optimal function. The protective mucus
stomach lining is predominately water and
therefore if you are dehydrated it is very
difficult to naturally produce this protective
barrier. Your body will therefore reduce the
stomach acidity (make more alkaline) to
prevent ulceration but this significantly
impairs the stomachs ability to break down its
contents.
Studies have shown that by drinking 1.5-2
litres of PLAIN water throughout the day to
be extremely beneficial for heartburn,
indigestion, GERD, and also bloating and
constipation! It’s also advisable to drink a
glass of water 20 minutes before any meal and
minimise fluid intake whilst eating.
Eat in a relaxed environment
Eating in a relaxed environment is crucial for
allowing healthy digestion and should not be
overlooked. When we are highly stimulated
by TV’s or eating on the go, or in loud busy
environments it stimulates our sympathetic
nervous systems which stops normal digestion
and diverts circulation away from our
digestive organs and glands to our muscles.
Chew your food slowly
Chewing your food thoroughly and taking
your time has a large number of benefits.
The majority of digestive enzymes are
actually in your mouth so chewing for
longer periods will aid the breakdown of
food. It allows for your body’s receptors to
give feedback when you are full and thereby
reducing the risk of over consuming
calories.
This is by no means a complete list and
there are many other things you can do to
improve your digestion. The better your
digestive health, the better you will look and
feel.
