WEAR STURDY, WELL- FITTING SUITABLE SHOESWear boots, shoes and slippers with non-slip soles. Considerfitting a grab rail if you have steps at your front or back door. Findout more about the Handy Persons Advisory Scheme here.

SAY GOODBYE TO WORN OUT SLIPPERSThey may be like old friends but it’s time to say goodbye toyour slippers if they have holes in their soles, frayed uppers,broken-down backs or the fit is ‘sloppy’.

WALKING AIDSCheck the rubber ferrule has plenty of grip left on yourwalking stick. If you don't use a walking stick why not use amountaineering pole instead that you can adjust the lengthof?

BE ALERTWatch your footing when out and about, stay on designatedwalkways that are well lit, and use handrails when available.Don't forget to take a well charged mobile phone out withyou too.

FOCUS ON FITNESS

SLOW AND STEADYAllow yourself extra time to reach your destination to avoidrushing when there's snow or ice outside. 

WRAP UP WARMWrap up when outside, wear layers, and stay warm when athome since your muscles work more efficiently when theyare warm, helping to prevent falls. Make sure you eat hotfood and drink more regularly. 

'Tis the season to be merry, however, the risk of unsteadinessincreases after drinking alcohol with age and more so if youare taking medication. Keep health risks from alcohol at a lowlevel by following advice about limits.
