Students at Totton College were joined by Councillor Cathie McEwing, The Mayor of Southampton, for the launch of a new state of the art TV studio at an Open Evening event on Wednesday 23 November.
The 4K high definition, multi-camera studio is set to transform film production at the College benefitting students from a variety of courses who can now film their work to an industry quality standard.
Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, Councillor McEwing said a few words to congratulate the students and staff. Music students then gave a performance, covering The Killers, My Brightside as media students filmed for the first time using the new kit.
Steve Launay, Creative Media Teacher, commented: “It is fantastic to see the studio up and running, the staff and students really pulled together to make the launch date so to see it set-up in all of its glory its very rewarding.
The equipment is top of the range so students are going to be able to push creative and technical boundaries. This really opens up doors for the College as we now look to expand our media offer to include broadcast journalism and develop our film production units.”
Demonstrations in Travel & Tourism, Childcare, Health & Social Care, I.T, Business, Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Motor Vehicle, Art & Design, Photography, Sports, Public Services and Science took place across the College throughout the evening.

A special antiques and collectables valuation event will be taking place soon in your area. The experts of Lockdales Auctioneers will be providing free valuations to the public on Thursday 2nd February, 10am to 2pm, at New Milton Memorial Centre, Whitefield Road, New Milton, Hampshire, BH25 6DE (free car parking subject to availability). There will be experts providing valuations on the following types of collectables: Coins (including British & World, sovereigns, Krugerrands, Royal Mint commemoratives & proof sets), stamps, banknotes, medals & militaria, antiques, clocks, watches, jewellery, gold, silver, pre-1900 documents/books & maps, cigarette-cards, postcards, pre-1960 sporting programmes & tickets, pens, vintage toys, vintage comics, scientific instruments, swords, bayonets & antique firearms. No appointment is necessary at this event, simply turn up with your items and the valuers will be happy to see you. Members of the public will have the option, if they wish, to consign their goods to auction (subject to terms & conditions). Cash purchase offers are also available. Valuations will be provided free of charge, with no obligation. High quality illustrated catalogues from previous auctions will be given away on a complimentary basis in order for the public to get a better idea of the services available. These valuation days have proven to be very popular in the past, and we have conducted hundreds of them across the UK. Some of the best items we have auctioned were brought to us at these events, such as two pieces of Russian 17th century enamelled silverware, a bowl and a lidded pot, which we later sold on behalf of the owners for over £75,000. One of the most interesting items we have sold recently was a fragment of pennant flag believed to have been carried by the army of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. This was featured on television, and in newspapers nationwide. Sold for £2800 as a speculative item, the feeling was strong overall that the story behind the flag is true. It was nice to handle a topical item such as this. (Coins of Richard III do very well also!)
LOCKDALES AUCTION
• The hottest markets for collectables at the moment are those of India, China and Asia in general, so if you have some old coins, stamps, postal covers or banknotes from those places you could be in luck!
• Be on the lookout for football programmes dated before 1960. Those from the 1940s and earlier are the most valuable.
• Cigarette Cards from small World War One era manufacturers can be good, particularly those of Taddy. The rarest set of all is Taddy Clowns, which has been known to sell for as much as £15,000.
• Condition is everything so try to keep anything you have in a safe, dry environment (not the garden shed or garage!).

The National Park Authority’s Seasonal Snaps photo contest received 350 entries that were viewed 30,000 times and attracted over 7,000 votes. Entrants hoped to win prizes for their pictures while inspiring others to treasure autumn in the New Forest. Photographers submitted their autumnal photos of the New Forest on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and four winners were chosen by a public vote on the National Park Authority’s Facebook page. A fifth prize winner was chosen by a judging panel. The winners are: 1st: Hannah Burrows 2nd: Matthew Pinner 3rd: Craig Hobbs 4th: Yvonne Holloway Judges’ Pick – Steve Elson
Public fall for autumnal Forest photos Barry Rickman, New Forest National Park Authority member, said: ‘The winning photos wonderfully convey the beauty of autumn in the New Forest and show why it is so important to safeguard this special area. Autumn is a lovely time to explore the National Park with your camera, so it is heartening to see that so many people have taken the opportunity. Congratulations to all the winners!' Two Apprentice Rangers have been employed in the New Forest as part of a scheme to protect, preserve and enhance its landscape, wildlife and heritage. Promoting awareness, understanding and enjoyment of the Forest and its surrounding areas, the apprentices will spend 13 months learning about and caring for this cherished landscape. The apprenticeships are joint-funded by the New Forest Association and the Our Past, Our Future landscape partnership scheme, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and led by the New Forest National Park Authority and 10 key partners. Over the course of four years, the New Forest National Park Authority is working together with the Forestry Commission, National Trust, Hampshire County Council and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust to offer two Environmental Conservation apprenticeships per year. New apprentices Katherine Argyrou, 21, and Joe Ison, 18, began their inductions and initial training at the New Forest National Park Authority, before undertaking placements with each of the organisations ranger teams, and are currently with the National Trust.Through these placements, they will receive training in all aspects of their role, including public engagement, natural history and practical conservation work to help manage, protect and promote the Forest’s landscape and wildlife. The apprenticeships will also provide the trainees with land management qualifications, including chainsaw training and first aid, with courses provided by Kingston Maurwood College, Dorchester. New Forest National Park Authority Lead Ranger Gillie Molland said: ‘We are very excited to be able to offer this opportunity to those wishing to start a career in countryside management. With fewer seasonal positions available now than when most of us started our careers, it is difficult to get on the first step of the ladder and gain the all-important experience necessary for securing future jobs. ‘This is a unique opportunity to not only learn what makes the New Forest special and how it is cared for, but also to gain experience of working with five New Forest Ranger teams and be supported by the wealth of knowledge from the New Forest Association.’ John Ward, Chairman of the New Forest Association, said: ‘For several years we have been supporting initiatives to increase understanding of the New Forest by young people. We are now very pleased to sponsor these apprenticeships, and wish Joe and Katherine well as they learn new skills for a future in countryside management within the unique environment of the New Forest.’
First Apprentice Rangers join National Park
Apprentice Rangers Joe Ison and Katherine Argyrou.
Apprentice Ranger Joe Ison said: ‘There’s so much to learn about this amazing landscape and its wildlife. We’re excited to be learning such a range of skills from experts in different fields and to be gaining professional qualifications to help our futures.’
Apprentice Ranger Katherine Argyrou said: ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to help care
for and protect the Forest and we can’t wait to get started.’ To find out more about the Apprentice Rangers project, please visit www.newforestnpa.gov.uk/apprenticerangers. More information on the Our Past, Our Future scheme can be found at www.newforestnpa.gov.uk/landscapepartnership.

Wildlife presenter Simon King is inviting budding volunteers to change their lives for the better at the New Forest’s number one volunteering event. The New Forest Volunteer Fair is organised by the New Forest National Park Authority and brings together dozens of local groups to help potential volunteers find their perfect role. After last year’s record attendance, hundreds of people are again expected to visit the free fair on Sunday 29 January. Open from 10.30am to 4pm at Lyndhurst Community Centre, the fair showcases opportunities from groups including the National Trust, Forestry Commission, Girlguiding Foxlease, Minstead Training Trust and more than 30 others.Simon King recognises the important role volunteers play in the National Park and said: ‘Volunteers are the lifeblood of the New Forest National Park. Without the efforts of thousands of people you just would not have the beauty that we see all around us in the Forest.‘If you want to do your bit then why not come along to the volunteer fair and find out how.’Volunteer roles on offer at the fair include recording wildlife, inspiring youngsters, restoring landscapes and helping some of society’s most vulnerable. As well as helping local communities and the environment, volunteering is also good for volunteers, helping you find friends, reach out to the community, improve your mental and physical wellbeing and even advance your career.
Patsy Baverstock, a conservation volunteer from Southampton, said: ‘Volunteering to pull up the invasive non-native plant Himalayan balsam gives me a great day out somewhere in the countryside, with the location constantly changing. Not only do you meet new people, the challenge of the task has its reward at the end of the day when you can see the result of your efforts’.Jim Mitchell, fair organiser and New Forest National Park Authority Interpretation Officer, said: ‘This fair is the perfect place to change your life for the better by trying something new. Volunteering is a fulfilling and satisfying way to spend your spare time, helping other people while making new friends and learning new skills for yourself.‘It can be confusing to know where to look to find your perfect role, but the volunteer fair allows you to browse dozens of local groups all in one place, on one day. There is no better way to start 2017 with a fresh start!’To find out more about the New Forest Volunteer Fair visit www.newforestnpa.gov.uk/volunteerfair

grounds of Manor House Hotel and the next 800 metres of gardens, lake and shrubs are all part of their surrounding environment. We need to walk round the lake (photo 3), across the open field and through the gate into the hotel’s extended car park. Keep going straight onwards towards the entrance gate which emerges on the edge of Chilworth Technology Park.
Taking care to cross this road we keep on the right hand side on the footpath for just 200 metres before turning right beside the Chilworth Arms, down Manor Road, past the Chilworth Playing Fields and then following the road round to the left as it becomes Chilworth Drove.
Once across the motorway bridge we are spoilt for choice of direction, with three options, our route is the sharpest left along the fence line beside the M27 (photo 4). If you can blank off the traffic noise this path is very pleasant for a long while until it drops down into rain washed gullies where there has been a lot of tree removal and coppicing. This has made the underfoot status challenging but not dangerous – and we need to persevere with this route for over a mile, by keeping the fence line always on our right hand.
The path joins a field on the right with a stream and woods to the left, which eventually meet a footpath finger post that aims us right over a gate and up through the next three fields, where cattle often graze.
The field can be surprisingly muddy despite being on the side of a hill, the left hand fence line probably being the firmest terrain! As we climb the fields Rownhams Services are just visible through the trees, but we are not going through them.
After conquering the muddy climb we mount the final stile, turn right and begin our return along Rownhams Lane to the car, which involves a 1 kilometre walk and a pleasant downhill stride to the car.
This walk begins at a location with
no pub or coffee bar to recharge afterwards, at Rownhams Wood, which can be found halfway between Rownhams and North Baddesley on the Rownhams Lane. As the road swings round a long bend (on the left coming from Rownhams), there is a substantial parking area which is always popular with the local walkers.
The start of this 4.5 mile walk is very easy, but latterly underfoot conditions can make the route seem a little longer.
Once out of the car we head down into Rownhams Wood (photo 1) along a wide trail that gradually reduces into a smaller path and then climbs gently
through some woods. Inevitably, the winter rain can make this soggy but navigable and emerges into pine woodland and up as far as a fence on the left (photo 2) with a Hamsphire County Council ‘Private’ sign on the right. We need to go through the fence gap and turn right following the path round past a copse of trees planted in a circle.
This path actually tracks through the
This month’s Walk:Circle around Rownhams by Malcolm Price
Essential items for walking anytime:
• High visibility clothing, vest or sash are ideal. Be seen at all times.
• Robust footwear, walking boots, good sturdy trainers – normal house shoes really not recommended.
• A torch (for gloomy days), mobile phone and a whistle (personal protection and safety).
• For dog walkers – take a supply of poop scoop bags.

Local solicitor Lindsay Taylor has joined a number of organisations representing older and vulnerable people to raise serious concerns around the Government’s online tool for creating Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs). An LPA is a powerful legal document that allows a person to appoint trusted individuals to make important decisions about care and finances on their behalf, in the event of a loss of mental capacity through an accident or illness such as dementia. In May 2014, the Government’s Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) launched its online LPA tool, which it claims allows people to create the documents without the need for professional advice from a solicitor. But a new report, published by a coalition of organisations led by Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE), warns that anyone creating an LPA without taking specialist legal advice faces a significantly higher risk of being left with an ineffective legal document, incurring additional application fees, and even becoming a victim of fraud or coercion. The report also raises concerns around the potential of a completely digital system proposed by the OPG, whereby ‘wet signatures’ – the physical signing of the document – would no longer be required. Lindsay Taylor is a Full Accredited member of SFE, and said: “The prospect of being able to submit an LPA application entirely digitally is extremely concerning, and raises some serious questions around the potential for fraud and financial abuse.”During a study conducted for the report, participants were invited to create LPAs using the OPG’s online tool and other ‘DIY’ methods. The study revealed that:• Some of the forms did not accurately express the way in
which participants would want their affairs and welfare to be handled in the future.
• Documents made using DIY methods were more likely to contain elementary mistakes, rendering them ineffective and requiring additional application fees. A common mistake occurs when an attorney signed and states their
date of birth instead of the date on which they signed.• Following consultation with a solicitor, most participants
made significant changes to the permissions of their documents regarding how and by whom their affairs were managed.
The OPG is actively trying to convince more people to apply for LPAs online, having set a target for the service to comprise 30% of all applications from April 2016 to March 2017. In its latest Annual Report, the OPG even admits it is willing to take ‘risks’ in striking a balance between ‘empowering and safeguarding’. Lindsay Taylor said: “An LPA is by far the most powerful and important legal document an individual can have, because it allows you to pass potentially life-changing decisions about your affairs on to a third party. It’s absolutely right that people should be planning ahead for the future with LPAs, but granting someone this sort of authority over your affairs is an extremely big responsibility for all parties involved. This is a specialist area of the law, and we recommend that anyone considering an LPA goes to a legal expert to ensure they get the right advice, consider all the options, and safeguard themselves for the future.”Bells Solicitors can offer advice in Private Client, Property and Matrimonial Matters. The office opens five days a week Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm, Saturdays 9 - 5 (by appointment only) and home or hospital appointments can be arranged where appropriate. If you require more advice, why not arrange a consultation? Our professional service is right on your doorstep.

I came across this statement a little while ago and it caused me to pause. It sounded very high minded and black and white. But then I reflected on the fact that Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher and philosophers do tend to spend a lot of time thinking and examining the meaning of things.
However most of us do not have the luxury of time. Our lives are so mapped out. We are meant to have done certain things by the time we are 18, or 25, or 35. By the time we are 40 we are expected to be married with children, earning enough money to keep our heads above water whilst giving love and care to those nearest to us. This leaves little time for thinking and reflecting on our self, examining our life thus far and seeing how we can improve our quality of life.
Counselling assumes that we all have the capacity within ourselves to make sense and heal ourselves. But by being with another person, a counsellor, we can be helped and guided to make sense of what is going on for us. It can give us the tools to examine and continue to reflect and examine our lives as we go forward in order to

Health, Beauty & Wellbeing
…. Wait… Stop! Do you feel as if you are in a perpetual, annual ‘Groundhog Day’? Are these the same resolutions you made last year, and the year before and even the year before that? Maybe we need to approach this list from a different direction. Maybe we need to take the pressure of trying to become a better human being off our shoulders a little for fear of the weight of perfection becoming too much.In a world where we are deafened by social noise in the form of stick-thin, photo-shopped models and living the perfect life, maybe we should be kinder… but to ourselves. By all means be more organised and lose weight if you want to, but rather try to achieve your goals by simply looking after yourself. Our necks seem permanently craned to our phones or computers and when they’re not our bodies are being pounded by exercise classes or gyms or dashing around to get everything done; kids to school; shopping finished; all in the name of the perfect life. We should take time out for ourselves. We are advised by healthcare professionals to have a regular dental check-up to help prevent problems with the teeth and mouth, an area of the body that is relatively small. However, the idea of having a regular check-up with a physical therapist is alien to many people. Yet, this type of check-up covers a general health examination, followed by treatment of your entire mechanical structure – your skeleton and muscles. A structure, that despite its size and importance we expect to keep going for seventy-plus years with little or no maintenance. It follows that when the musculoskeletal structure is well-maintained with good posture, core stability, flexibility and strength, there will be less abnormal pressure and forces applied to the joints of the
spine, hips, knees and ankles. This could lead to a significant reduction in the potential of damage to those joints and therefore less likelihood for the need of joint replacement operations in later life. In turn this could lead to a much better quality of life, possibly the difference of an active life or one spent sitting in an armchair because anything else is too painful. Ask yourself one question, do you think that your entire body is as important as your teeth?
It seems the norm to only visit a Chiropractor when you are in pain but maybe our resolution this year should be to make regular visits to our health professionals even when we feel OK. Not only will this correct any minor misalignments before they become issues, it will also give us something that we are steadily erasing from our lives… ‘Me Time’. Do not underestimate the power of ‘Me Time’. It is a wonderful resource for mind, body and soul and whilst our lives get busier and busier, ironically, the need to slow down and take care of ourselves becomes all the more important.
So rewrite those resolutions and make sure you take care of yourself this year. Have a look at the Chiros Clinics website (www.chirosclinic.com) for a full range of therapies and treatments that complement each other and will give you a fantastic sense of wellbeing to face any challenges that lie ahead in 2017.
Happy New Year!

But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Totton area
and manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

After a 2-2 draw in the league with Wantage on Saturday, the Stags hosted Horndean in the 3rd round of the Hampshire Senior Cup last night. The game got off to a lively start as both Ben Cooper and Nathaniel Sherborne saw their close range attempts saved by Price. The Stags early pressure soon told as they took the lead with 14 minutes on the clock. Mike Gosney swept a low left footed cross towards Nick WATTS who buried his low shot into the bottom left hand corner of the goal
Horndean responded well and forced Totton keeper Charlie Searle into 2 good saves from Connor Duffin and Sam Smart respectively, however, The Stags doubled their lead just after the half hour mark, when Jack VALLIS headed home a corner from the right hand side. The visitors again attempted to reply immediately, but Sam Hockey was the latest 'Deans' player to be thwarted by Searle.
Just before the break, Totton extended their lead through all time top goalscorer GOSNEY, who picked up the ball around 20 yards from goal and fired in effortlessly beyond Price. HT 3-0
This was certainly a game of 2 halves as
STAGS ADVANCE TO HAMPSHIRE SENIOR CUP
QUARTER FINALS
AFC Totton 3-2 Horndean
Horndean looked to come out and have a right go at Totton, who until the 51st minute looked in control of the tie. Sam SMART pulled one back with a low curling shot into the far corner, beyond Searle.
The visitors looked to be growing in confidence and were able to restrict The Stags to a degree, before pulling a second goal back to ensure sure a nail biting finish. With just 7 minutes left, TAMBLING reduced the visitors arrears to 1 goal, finishing off a decent move at the back post. However, although Horndean piled pressure on Totton in the final few minutes, it ultimately wasn't enough to take the tie to penalties and it was The Stags who advanced to the Quarter Finals of the Hampshire Senior Cup. FT 3-2
Louis Langdown will have been happy to oversee his first cup win at AFC Totton and hopefully it can be used as a platform for Louis and the boys to bring something back from Saturday's trip to Bideford, the longest trip of the season for The Stags.
Stags Lineup: Searle, York, Oliver, Williams, Vallis, Roberts***, Watts**, Hunt, Sherborne*, Cooper, Gosney.
Subs: Allen***, Munday**, Knight*.
