Resilience Engineering: New Solutions with a New Perspective
Resilience Engineering is a new perspective and methodology in safety and risk management. While standard approaches to safety and risk management focus on why technical, human, organisational and/or system failures happen, Resilience Engineering not only focuses on the question «Why did it go wrong?», but also on: «Why did it go well?».
Resilience Engineering focuses on the whole range of outcomes: from the negative to – especially – the positive ones. The objective of Resilience Engineering is not only to manage risks, but to ensure that processes and systems operate in a safe and resilient manner. The morning sessions provide an overview of Resilience Engineering and new developments in safety, risk and emergency management, with special attention to the fields of aviation, air traffic control, transport, energy production and critical network infrastructures. The afternoon sessions expand the scope beyond technology-focused applications to consider how Resilience Engineering concepts are integrated in risk management. These concepts are considered first in the context of re - insurance and then, extrapolated to a national perspective, in terms of how Resilience Engineering can provide a new approach to managing the natural, technical and systemic hazards in the context of civil pro tection. During the conference participants will gain a solid basis in the state of the art in Resilience Engineering and its applications in various fields. The conference is aimed at engineers and scientists, practitioners in safety, risk and emergency management, managers of complex systems, and insurance specialists, for whom it also provides a valuable networking opportunity. We look forward to meeting you on the 23rd of October 2015 at the Aula W of the ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Winterthur, Switzerland.
