2. Mexican American war
- The Mexican American war was a war over
3. CA. It began in 1846. It ended in 1848. America won the war
and CA became the 31 ststate. 4. Brenarda Ruiz
- Brenarda Ruiz arranged a peace meeting between the leaders of
Mexico and the U.S. to stop the Mexican-American war since lots
people of people were dying.
5. Helen Hunt Jackson
- Helen was famous for writing a book called Ramona. It was about
the harsh treatment of CA Indians. She did not like how they were
treated.
6. Biddy Mason
- Biddy Mason was born into slavery on a plantation. Biddy moved
to CA with her owner. Since there was no slavery in CA,Biddy
petitioned for her freedom. When she was finally free, she became a
nurse.
7. Mary Tape
- Mary tape is a Chinese who couldn't go to school. She went to
court to fight for the right for her kids to go to school. They
finally opened up a school just for Chinese.

- In 1862, Beckwourth led a group of settlers through a pass in
the Sierra Nevadas. It was later named after him. Beckwourth was
African American.
9. 49'rs
- 49'rs are miners who came to California in 1849 to find
gold.
10. Jedediah Smith
- Jedediah Smith was born on January 6th. In 1826, Jedidiah Smith
led the first group of American fur trappers to California.
11. John Sutter
- John Sutter was from Switzerland He owned Sutters Fort in
Sacramento. John Sutter arrived in the US in 1834.
12. Fort Ross
- Fort Ross was owned by Russians. They came to hunt sea otter
and trade. Ivan Kuskov built Fort Ross.
13. Mission
- Missions were set up for religious purposes. The mission kept
the CaliforniaIndians in the missions and made them work hard.
14. Sam Brannon
- Sam Brannon was an entrepreneur. When he found out that there
was gold, he ran through the streets with a bottle of gold dust to
make people excited.Everybody bought mining tools from him.
15. Levi Strauss
- Levi Strauss is an entrepreneur He is famous for making the
first denim jeans. He knew that miners needed tough mining jeans
while they mined.
16. John Bidwell
- In 1841, John Bidwell was in and helped organize the first
wagon train. He camefrom Independence, Missouri and traveled to
California.
17. John C. Fremont
- John Fremont made maps for the U.S. government and wrote
reports to interest the east to come to the west.
18. Ranchos
- A rancho is a large area of land were crops are grown and
animals are raised.
19. Presidios
- Presidios are forts. Spanish soldiers built presidios in the
borderland. It began as a wooden fence where settlers could be
protected from attacks.

- Gaspar De Portola was sent to California to run it's colony.
When he arrived, he led an expedition.
21. Father Serra
- Father Serra decided to become a Francis priest in the
Catholicchurch. He chose Junipero as his religious name.
22. Desert Region The desert is a dry area witch gets ten
inches(5 inches) of rain each year. To survive, animals build homes

- Most people live along the coast. The coast has a lot of
jobssuch as fishing. This region is known for tourism and
agriculture.

- The mountain region is where most of the water in California
comes from. The Donner Pass and the Beckworth Pass are the famous
passes left in mountains.

- One of the world's best farming areas is the California valley
region. The many features such as rich soil makes the valley well
suited for growing crops. The valley region have rivers that give
the valley water.

- Sir Francis Drake was born inFebruaryof 1540. He was the oldest
of twelve sons.He was famous for sailing around the world and
returned to England.
27. ChristopherColumbus
- Christopher Columbus was born in 1451. He became a sailor when
he was 15 years old.
28. Vitus Bering
- Vitus Bering was born 1861. He led an expedition over 6,000
miles in the wilderness.
29. JuanCabrillo
- Juan Cabrillo was raised inCastile. He led the first European
expedition. He tripped over a rock and died.

- My name is Zoe and I'min 4 thgrade. My teacher is Mr.
Greenfield and he is so funny! I go to Bridgeport elementary
school.
