This could indicate a missed opportunity. Have you ever wondered how many people attending your Sunday service or church event want to give, but can't? Not because they can't afford to, but because they don't have cash or a check on them. According to CNN Money, 43% of American adults go a week at a time without using cash at all. Instead, they depend on debit and credit cards.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOUR CHURCH? If you want to modernize your giving options and increase your donations, you should have a credit/debit card donation alternative that people can easily access.  According to one estimate, organizations lose up to 80% of consumer impulse transactions if they don't accept credit cards. When you have a special speaker or are supporting a missionary family, it is critical to provide a simple way for your congregation to donate on the spot. When they walk out your doors, their desire to donate is often forgotten.

Accepting debit and credit card donations is important, but what is the best way to do that? Obviously, having a credit card terminal in the foyer or resource center is not practical.

CHAPTER 2: Leverage the Power & Scale of Smartphones

133.7 million people in the U.S. own smartphones.

Less than 3% of all donations are received that way. Traditional online donations are great, but they miss the mark in terms of simplicity, convenience and impulse. Then what is the solution?

ü  Avoid paying monthly and any type of set-up fees.

ü  Be cautious of sites that claim "We only charge 1% plus credit

card fees." As good as it sounds, ”PLUS CREDIT CARD FEES" can be expensive. To process any Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover card, these card companies set their own rates per transaction (known in the industry as interchange). After the card companies set their rates, processors build their fees on top plus fees they don't want you to know about.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR AND WHAT TO AVOID WHEN UTILIZING A MOBILE DONATION PLATFORM

Page 10: 3 Simple Ways to Modernize & Increase Donations at Your Church

Ø  Non-Swiped Transaction Fee - 2-3% per transaction

Ø  Additional Transaction Fee - $0.30+ per transaction

Ø  Monthly Minimum Fee - Credit card processors typically charge their merchant’s a monthly minimum fee if they don’t process enough transactions, usually around $25+ per month.

Ø  Statement Fee - A fee just to receive your merchant account statement and it is usually about $5+ per month.

Ø  PCI Compliance Fee - A fee passed to the organization for PCI compliance of $100+ per year.

Ø  Downgrade Fee - This is the credit card processing industry’s dirty little secret. Each credit card has it’s own type of processing fees assigned to it. For example, a business rewards card has a higher rate than a non-rewards card. Downgrade fees costs merchants an additional 1-3% per transaction and on average 50% of a merchant’s transactions experience these fees (ever wondered how they paid for airline miles and cash back).

CREDIT CARD PROCESSING FEES EXPLAINED…

Page 11: 3 Simple Ways to Modernize & Increase Donations at Your Church

Ø  Early Termination Fee - Most credit card processors make you sign a contract and if you cancel before the end date, you are slapped with a fee of $100+.

Ø  Annual Fee - Most credit card processors will also charge you a yearly fee just to process with them at around $99+ a year.

Ø  International Card Fee - There is also additional transaction fee to accept international credit cards.

Ø  Separate Rate for Amex and Discover - Typical processors will have a separate rate for American Express and Discover cards.

To avoid these hidden fees, take advantage of a mobile donation platform that has a flat rate for every donation. This can save you the headache of trying to figure out what transaction rate you are actually paying and most importantly it can save you money.

ü  27% of organizations worldwide planned to implement location-based marketing in 2013.

ü  48% of smartphone owners use or would like to use a smartphone to shop while in-store or on the go.

ü  74% of U.S. consumers use location based services on their smartphone and 46% of mobile phone users use location based services.
