INTRODUCTION

What is Energy ?

Energy is the capacity of a physical system to do work. General units of energy are joules or ergs. Electrical

energy is represented in KWh.

To perform any kind of work we need energy. Like for operating any electrical appliance electrical energy is

required.

What is Conservation ?

Conservation is the preservation and careful management of the environment and of natural resources.

The energy that we use is mainly derived from the fossil resources like coal and petroleum products.

They will deplete soon if we keep on using the energy at current rate.

INTRODUCTION

What is Energy Conservation ?

Energy Conservation is nothing but judicious and prudent use of available energy resources.

Main forms of energy used at our houses are: Electricity, LPG , Fuel and Water.

INTRODUCTION

Electrical Energy Demand and Supply Situation:

Currently there is a big gap between energy demand and energy supply :

Like in Maharashtra state -

Peak demand = 21069 MW

Peak met = 16417 MW

Deficiency = 22%

So In just Maharashtra state alone currently we are facing 22% deficit of power and in future the

situation is going to deteriorate further, so it’s very imperative for all of us to conserve electricity.

You all must have also experienced the load shedding problem in Boisar this summer. This was due to energy shortage only.

The only way to tackle this issue of energy shortage is “ ENERGY CONSERVATION” which begins

with our houses.

We all can attempt to assuage this problem by starting to conserve energy at our house. All should

make efforts to reduce energy consumption.

ELECTRICITY CONSERVATION

General Tips to conserve electrical energy at house:

We all should use electricity wisely and only when required.

Switch off all the equipments like fan, bulbs, tube lights etc. before leaving the room.

Use efficient lights, fans, pumps, geysers, AC’s and other appliances.

On a sunny day hang clothes outside instead of using the dryer.

To save water and power use washing machines with full load of clothes.

Switch off the power supply of TV and other electronic gadgets instead of keeping it in standby. This will save energy.

ELECTRICITY CONSERVATION

Air conditioners (A.C.) :

Use AC in ‘low cool’ or ‘medium cool’ mode instead of ‘high cool’. If you have remote control set cooling

temperature 4 or 5 degrees less than outside temperature. Ideal setting is 24 degree Celsius.

Clean AC filters and service AC monthly.

When AC is ON do not leave windows or doors open. It will result in more power consumption.

Start the AC an hour after starting work and shut off an hour before closing.

Use latest technology energy efficient AC’s.

ELECTRICITY CONSERVATION

Refrigerator :

Place Refrigerator about 6 inches away from wall.

Set the refrigerator knob in low or medium position.

Avoid leaving refrigerator door open. Decide what you want before you open the door.

Check the gasket of door for any leakage.

Defrost the refrigerator every week.

Regularly remove dust and cobwebs behind refrigerator.

Lighting :

Replace bulbs with slim tube lights and electronic chokes or with compact fluorescent lamps for energy

saving.

Use CFL in place of incandescent lamp for 85% saving.

A 100W bulb consumes 1 unit of energy in 10 hours. In same case a 18W CFL will give same lumen

output with energy consumption of just 0.18 unit. So a saving of around 82%. Bulbs are most

inefficient. So replace all the bulbs with CFL. CFL’s are available in range of 2W to 40W.

Where light requirement is less like toilets, passage etc use less wattage CFL ex 2W.

During day when it is brighter outside, open curtains and use sunlight instead of turning on the lights.

Lighting :

Prefer task lighting instead of uniform one all over the place.

Follow recommended illumination levels.

Keep clean all lighting equipments and reflectors.

Optimize use of natural lighting.

Use T5 fluorescent light in place of conventional T12 fluorescent light.

T12 light power consumption = 40W + 12W (magnetic choke) = 52W

T5 light power consumption = 28W + 4W (electronic ballast) = 32W

So saving of 38.4% power. In addition to that luminance level will increase by 18% as lumen output of T5

is 2900lm where as T12 is 2450lm.

LPG CONSERVATION

The next natural source of energy used at our house is LPG. There is a limited reservoir of natural gas

in world and we all should commit our self to conserve LPG.

Some points to look to save LPG at house are:

Turn off the gas cylinder knob when the gas is not in use.

Check your pipe, regulators, burner regularly for leakages. If any abnormality is observed immediately

change the faulty unit.

Try to monitor the date of changing of the cylinder. This will give you exact consumption of LPG by

which you can try to increase the life of cylinder.

Before cooking the certain things likes pulses, grains, rice etc keep them in water for some time. This

will help in fast cooking.

LPG CONSERVATION

After taking out food from refrigerator, keep it outside and allow it to come to room temperature and then

cook it. Like boiling milk etc…

Keep the entire cooking material ready before lighting the stove.

Avoid excessive water in cooking.

Use utensils having broad base. Use lid on cooking utensils.

Prefer small burner and light. Ensure stable, bright and blue flame. Reduce flame when boiling starts.

Avoid often reheating of food. Store food in insulated containers.

As far as possible cook food in pressure cooker.

WATER CONSERVATION

Water seems to be abundantly available resource of energy but in reality the sources of water are

shrinking at an alarming rate due to global warming and green house effect.

It is the future prediction that the next world war will be fought mainly due to water disputes.

Therefore we should make efforts to conserve water.

Some simple tips to conserve water are:

Do not use shower for bathing. Use bucket.

Do not keep tap open while tooth brushing and shaving.

Wash your vehicles by using bucket and cloth. Do not use pipe.

Use water harvesting.

VEHICLE FUEL CONSERVATION

Some simple tips to conserve fuel on road are:

Get the vehicle regularly serviced and engine tuned.

Maintain correct tire pressure.

Clean air filters regularly.

Drive in correct gears and at optimum and uniform speed.

Keep your foot off the clutch and use it only while changing gears.

Avoid idle running of engine.

Make the vehicle lighter. Reduce unnecessary load.

Plan your trips & route and avoid rush-hour traffic.

Prefer cycle than fuel-operated vehicles.

SUMMARY

It is the need of the hour to conserve energy. We all should pledge to use energy judiciously .

One unit of energy saved at house = 1.3 unit generated, transmitted and distributed.

To make world a better place to live and to give next generation something to cherish we all should save

energy at house.

If we do not wake up now it may be too late and then load shedding may become a permanent reality for

us.

All should also educate others about energy conservation.

If we all make efforts to conserve energy definitely we can make a change in society.
