In the future we plan to: Provide MDG workshops for young people and assist them to obtain

funding, grants and sponsorship for action projects.

Organise events for young people to promote local talent, keep traditional cultural arts alive and develop new art forms.

Provide a MDG Awareness Road Show to Schools of Tonga

Network with other Pacific Island Youth Organizations and participate in international events (i.e. YSF-Youth For a Sustainable Future,, Pacific Arts Festivals)

Establish a youth centre that provides opportunity for youth to develop and up skill creative talents in performing arts, visual arts, media arts, eco-tourism, community health and traditional studies with the view of improving lives, raising the standard of these activities in Tonga and generating income for youth and their communities.

"The secret message communicated to most young people today by the society around them is that

they are not needed, that the society will run itself quite nicely until they - at some distant

point in the future - will take over the reins. Yet the fact is that the society is not running itself

nicely... because the rest of us need all the energy, brains, imagination and talent that young people can bring to bear down on our difficulties.

For society to attempt to solve its desperate problems without the full participation of even very young people is imbecile." - Alvin Toffler

(2005)

PROJECT YEYA !!??

Youth Empowering Youth to Act! (YEYA!)

-for the development and sustainability of our communities-.

Page 18: OUR 1st

Goal of the project:

To engage the young people of Tonga in activities which;

develop their creative potential, social awareness and professional skills,

build their self-esteem and confidence andencourage and enable them to contribute responsiblyto the development of our Tongan society within the

Global Community.’

These are all areas that need strengthening and consolidating. The Arts (drama, music, dance, theatre, visual art , media) provide positive channels that

young people can relate to with enthusiasm and creativity either as individuals, active members of a team or as an audience .

Page 19: OUR 1st

Background and reasons for Project YEYA

The Arts keep the identity of a community intact. They provide a sense of purpose and belonging and promote community cultural development.

The Arts shine a light on the members within communities, their stories, their struggles and their achievements.

Page 20: OUR 1st

At this critical time in Tonga’s social development the young people need a safe means to explore local and global issues, and to voice and develop their ideas and responses. This project will also provide the opportunity for youth to use their existing talents and learn new skills for creative expression and communication.

Tongan youth need to set precedents for their peers in successfully initiating and implementing their own projects in collaboration with experienced professionals and elders in order to be well equipped for leadership roles as adults of the future.

Page 21: OUR 1st

The present state of Arts in Tonga is fragmented and without sufficient national coordination or consistency. This project will demonstrate and promote a professional standard of Community Artworks and Productions

As Pacific culture denotes young people to be ‘seen and not heard’ youth are at a disadvantage to becoming potentially active members of their communities. This renders youth powerless when faced with important issues such as HIV, inadequate education and unemployment. Youth with low access to new forms of media and new ways to learn and share their ideas are also disadvantaged if they cannot contribute to global developments.

Page 22: OUR 1st

Youth need the opportunity to take responsibility for crucial themes and targets of local and universal development such as the MDG’s.

Page 23: OUR 1st

The Arts provide an effective, fun and diverse arena for young people to formulate their understanding, develop their confidence and skills, and share there awareness with others. Young people have the potential to be leaders of change amongst their peers and communities
