ABOUT IRON AND STEEL INDUSTRY

1. Iron and steel industry is a key and basic industry of an economy. It is the oldest industries of India in ancient time and was well developed also.

2. Steel is used as a basic material in the manufacturing of metal products, electrical products, machines and tools product, even in transport equipments and textile as well. The importance of steels equally great for national defence and now a days steel become the symbol of industrialization and strength of an economy.

ORIGIN IN INDIA

1. The real beginning of iron and steel industry in India was in 1907 when TATA IRON AND STEEL COMPANY (TISCO) was established at Jamshedpur in Bihar state ( now in Jharkhand state). Tata steel started producing steel from 1911.

2. Further Indian iron and steel company (IISCO) was established in Burnpur of West Bengal. In 1923 Mysore iron and steel industry was established at Bhadrawati in Karnataka.

3. After independence the development of the industry got a systematic direction through the various 5 years planning and three big companies established at that period, these are ROURKELA STEEL PLANT in ODISSA with German assistance , One in DURGAPUR STEEL PLANT in WEST BENGAL with British assistance, One in BOKARO STEEL PLANT in BIHAR with the assistance of Russia. During the forth and fifth year plan 3 new plants again were setup in SALEM of TAMIL NADU , VIJAYNAGAR in KARNATAKA and VISHAKAPATNAM in ANDHRA CAPACITY.

4. In 1974 for the development of steel industry in India and for further rapid growth in this sector the largest organisation in this field ‘Steel Authority of India ltd.’ (SAIL) was formed by the government of India.
