The school library provides information and ideas that are fundamental to functioning successfully in our increasingly information- and knowledge-based present day society.

The school library equips students with lifelong learning skills and develops their imagination, thereby enabling them to live as responsible citizens

Unique place – School Library

There is no denying fact that Library occupies a very prominent place in the educational set up at present.

The changing pattern of education demands that the learning must be accelerated and broadened by the use of many and varied devices and materials.

While quality is important, so too is balance of stock and having the right book for the right child. The content should be appropriate to the maturity of the reader.

Selecting Resources

Selecting the right resources for the library is the key to success. It will enable the school library to inspire a child’s imagination, provide for a child’s information needs and create life-long learners.

The teaching in the new set –up can not be class room centered but has to be child centered and library centered.

Children need an environment of attractive books from the beginning and it is one of the duties of the school to provide this environment.

If a child’s early experiences with books are pleasant, a sound foundation is laid for their use in his future development because once the child has been taught to read and brought to love books, he can explore.

Library period is as important as any other subject period. To put the library into effective use, a regular library period is necessary for all classes.

The class library concept is based on Dr. S.R.Ranganathan (father of library science), laws of library science in particular ‘books for all ‘ and’ Every book its reader’.

It is a small collection of books which is kept in the class room, as per the requirements of the class and its users.

The books are kept in the class almirah with locking arrangements. A class teacher or the teacher in charge for library class is managing the class library system in their respective classes.Children must be asked write name of the book, author, gist of the story they have read, striking illustrations, moral, difficult words, which should be checked by the teacher with useful instructions.

All children must be asked to prepare a scrapbook out of cuttings from newspaper and magazines .It gives great scope for creative work. Topics may be chosen on the basis of child requirements like animals, birds, sports personality, places and so on.

CREATIVITY

Children may be asked to write small stories, poems. Book Reviews paintings, jokes, art work like poster making , book mark making , collection of current general knowledge questions and answers.

CONCLUSION

Hence the School library can play an important role in all aspects of education. As all education does not take place at home or school its service makes a substantial contribution to children’s education during school life and also helps in their future search for knowledge.
