2. Evidence of Ancient faith Second Questioner: But are there not too many differences in various human cultures to see any divine design? The Disciple: Such differences are actually only local letters in an alphabet of affinity, which, over and over again, spell out purpose, hope, and divine design. Your assertion in the form of a question is the other side of another assumption: some say that cultural similarities are causes to conclude that man is alone. But one must not mistake the fragments of original faith for evidence against that faith. 3. Doctrinal Debris: P 52 (John 18:31-33, 37-38) 117-138 CE One must recognize doctrinal debris for what it is-remnants of revealed religion, pieces of powerful principles that are as traceable as pieces of ancient pottery. Israels Second God There were many in first-century Palestine who still retained a world-view derived from the more ancient religion of Israel [that of the First Temple] in which there was a High God and several Sons of God, one of whom was Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel. Yahweh, the Lord, could be manifested on earth in human form, as an angel or in the Davidic king. It was as a manifestation of Yahweh, the Son of God, that Jesus was acknowledged as Son of God, Messiah and Lord. Margaret Barker 11. Moses 1:38-39 12. For an account of the process by which the books of the O.T. and N.T. came to be recognized as scripture, see Canon. Latter-day revelation identifies scripture as that which is spoken under the influence of the Holy Ghost (D&C 68:14). (Bible Dictionary | S Scripture:Entry) 13. Canon. A word of Greek origin, originally meaning "a rod for testing straightness," now used to denote the authoritative collection of the sacred books used by the true believers in Christ. In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the canonical books are called standard works. 14. The history of the process by which the books of the Bible were collected and recognized as a sacred authority is almost hidden in obscurity. There are several legends extant and these may have some truth in them, but certainly are not complete or totally accurate. Though many of the details have not been preserved, we know that the servants of the Lord have been commanded to keep records even from the earliest times, and that those records have been revered by the faithful and handed down from generation to generation. (Bible Dictionary | C Canon:Entry) 15. 33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? (New Testament | John 18:33) 16. What is truth? 37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. 38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? "There were four human figures, together with some two or more rolls of papyrus covered with hieroglyphic figures and devices." Again, Joseph Smith recorded: 20. Apocrypha comes from the Greek word , which means those having been hidden away. The general term is usually applied to the books that were considered by the Church as useful, but not divinely inspired. 24. Apocrypha Secret or hidden. By this word is generally meant those sacred books of the Jewish people which were not included in the Hebrew Bible (see Canon). They are valuable as forming a link connecting the Old and New Testaments, and are regarded in the Church as useful reading, although not all the books are of equal value. (Bible Dictionary | AApocrypha:Entry) 25. Apocrypha They are the subject of a revelation recorded in D&C 91, in which it is stated that the contents are mostly correct, but with many interpolations by man. Among these books the following are of special value: 26. The First Book of Esdras The Book of Tobit The Book of Judith (fiction) The rest of the chapters of the Book of Esther The Wisdom of Solomon The Wisdom of Jesus the son of Sirach, or Ecclesiasticus The Book of Baruch Epistle of Jeremy The Song of the Three Children. Purports to be the song sung by Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego The History of Susanna Bel and the Dragon The Prayer of Manasses The First Book of the Maccabees The Second Book of the Maccabees 27. The books mentioned above taken together make up what is generally known as the Apocrypha. They are frequently printed along with the canonical scriptures. The Roman Church regards as part of the canon the books of Tobit, Judith, Wisd., Ecclus., Baruch, 1 and 2 Macc., and the additions to Daniel and Esther. Besides these books, there are other Jewish apocryphal writings. The chief are the Psalms of Solomon, the Book of EnochBook of Enoch, the Apocalypse of Baruch, the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, the Assumption of Moses, the Book of JubileesAssumption of Moses, the Book of Jubilees, and the Sibylline Oracles.(Bible Dictionary | A Apocrypha:Entry) 28. Lost Books. The so-called lost books of the Bible are those documents that are mentioned in the Bible in such a way that it is evident they were considered authentic and valuable, but that are not found in the Bible today. Sometimes called missing scripture, they consist of at least the following: 29. Book of the Wars of the Lord (Num. 21:14); Book of Jasher (Josh. 10:13; 2 Sam. 1:18); Book of the acts of Solomon (1 Kgs. 11:41); Book of Samuel the seer (1 Chr. 29:29); Book of Gad the seer (1 Chr. 29:29); Book of Nathan the prophet (1 Chr. 29:29; 2 Chr. 9:29); Prophecy of Ahijah (2 Chr. 9:29); Visions of Iddo the seer (2 Chr. 9:29; 12:15; 13:22); Book of Shemaiah (2 Chr. 12:15); Book of Jehu (2 Chr. 20:34); Sayings of the seers (2 Chr. 33:19); An epistle of Paul to the Corinthians, earlier than our present 1 Corinthians (1 Cor. 5:9); Possibly an earlier epistle to the Ephesians (Eph. 3:3); An epistle to the Church at Laodicea (Col. 4:16); 30. Prophecies of Enoch, known to Jude (Jude 1:14). The Book of Mormon makes reference to writings of O.T. times and connection that are not found in the Bible, the Book of Mormon, or in any other known source. These writings are of Zenock, Zenos, and Neum (1 Ne. 19:10; Alma 33:317). An extensive prophecy by Joseph in Egypt (which is not in the Bible) is also apparent from 2 Ne. 3:4 22, and a prophecy of Jacob (not found in the Bible) is given in Alma 46:2426. These writings were evidently contained on the plates of brass spoken of in the Book of Mormon (1 Ne. 5:1013). (Bible Dictionary | L Lost Books:Entry) 31. Pseudepigrapha are falsely attributed works, texts whose claimed authorship is unfounded; a work, simply, "whose real author attributed it to a figure of the past."[1] The word "pseudepigrapha" (from the Greek: , pseuds, "false" and , epigraph, "inscription"; The Book of Enoch is an example of a pseudepigraph; no Hebrew scholars would ascribe its authorship to Enoch, 32. The term gnostic gospels refers to gnostic collections of writings about the teachings of Jesus, written from the 2nd - 4th century AD.[1] These gospels are not accepted by most mainstream Christians as part of the standard Biblical canon. Rather, they are part of what is called the New Testament apocrypha 33. Nag Hammadi is best known for being the site where local farmers found a sealed earthenware jar containing thirteen leather-bound papyrus codices, together with pages torn from another book, in December 1945. The farmers burned one of the books and parts of a second (including its cover). Thus twelve of these books (one missing its cover) and the loose pages survive[1] . The writings in these codices, dating back to the 2nd century AD,[2] comprised 52 mostly Gnostic tractates (treatises) 34. Though there are many documents that could be included among the gnostic gospels, the term most commonly refers to the following: Gospel of Mary (recovered in 1896)[23] Gospel of Thomas (versions found in Oxyrhynchus, Egypt in 1898, and again in the Nag Hammadi Library)[24] Gospel of Truth (Nag Hammadi Library) Gospel of Philip (Nag Hammadi Library) Gospel of Judas (recovered via the antiquities black market in 1983, and then reconstructed in 2006) 35. Non canonical books are texts of uncertain authenticity, or writings where the work is seriously questioned. Given that different denominations have different ideas about what constitutes canonical scripture, there are several different versions of the apocrypha 36. The Dead Sea scrolls consist of about 900 documents, including texts from the Hebrew Bible, discovered between 1947 and 1956 in eleven caves in and around the Qumran Wadi near the ruins of the ancient settlement of Khirbet Qumran, on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea. The texts are of great religious and historical significance, as they include some of the only known surviving copies of Biblical documents made before 100 B.C. 37. The Dead Sea Scrolls are traditionally divided into three groups: "Biblical" manuscripts (copies of texts from the Hebrew Bible), which comprise roughly 40% of the identified scrolls; "Apocryphal" or "Pseudepigraphical" manuscripts (known documents from the Second Temple Period like Enoch, Jubilees, Tobit, Sirach, non-canonical psalms, etc., that were not ultimately canonized in the Hebrew Bible), which comprise roughly 30% of the identified scrolls; and "Sectarian" manuscripts 38. The local paper stated: "Language is too poor to adequately describe the desolation and ruin of Richmond. Within a few moments, a third of the town was made desolate. Five hundred persons made homeless with many of them left penniless. Richmond is in grief and mourning. 45. The small room shown as one story on the northeast corner of the house is the room in which David Whitmer kept the trunk which held the original Book of Mormon manuscript [which had been entrusted to his care upon the death of Oliver Cowdery in 1850]. David Whitmer later made the statement: "While I was camping around here in a tent, all my effects exposed to the weather, everything in my trunk became moldy, but the manuscript was preserved, not even being discolored." The old stagecoach trunk, with the historic manuscript, and other valuable writings and mementos, was turned over on April 18, 1903, to the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints [now known as the Community of Christ], at Independence, Missouri. Soon after the Church was organized on 6 April 1830, the Lord commanded the Prophet Joseph Smith to begin an inspired translation, or revision, of the King James Version of the Bible. Today this inspired revision, which the Prophet worked on until the time of his death, is known as the Joseph Smith Translation. The Prophet Joseph Smith restored to the Bible many parts which are plain and most precious; and also many covenants of the Lord [which were] taken away (1 Nephi 13:26; see also 1 Nephi 13:3940). 54. The first nineteen pages, revealed between June 1830 and the end of that year, contain his revision of the first few chapters of Genesis. (Pearl of Great Price | Preface Introduction:6) 61. How Did the Church Obtain the Book ofHow Did the Church Obtain the Book of Abraham?Abraham? On 3 July 1835 a man named Michael Chandler brought four Egyptian mummies and several papyrus scrolls of ancient Egyptian writings to Kirtland, Ohio. The mummies and papyri had been discovered in Egypt several years earlier by Antonio Lebolo. Kirtland was one of many stops in the eastern United States for Chandlers mummy exhibition. Chandler was offering the mummies and rolls of papyrus for sale and, at the urging of the Prophet Joseph Smith, several members of the Church donated money to purchase them. In a statement dated 5 July 1835, Joseph Smith, declaring the importance of these ancient Egyptian writings, recorded: 62. I commenced the translation of some of the characters or hieroglyphics, and much to our joy found that one of the rolls contained the writings of Abraham. . . . Truly we can say, the Lord is beginning to reveal the abundance of peace and truth (History of the Church, 2:236). 63. Oliver Cowdery to William Frye Upon the subject of the Egyptian records, or rather the writings of Abraham and Joseph, I may say a few words. This record is beautifully written on papyrus with black, and a small part, red ink or paint, in perfect preservation. The characters are such as you find upon the coffins of mummies, hieroglyphics, &c. with many characters or letters exactly like the present, (although probably not quite so square,) form of the Hebrew without points. 68. Oliver Cowdery to William Frey These records were obtained from one of the catacombs in Egypt, near the place where once stood the renowned city of Thebes, by the celebrated French traveller Antonio Lebolo, in the year 1831. He procured license from Mehemet Ali, then Viceroy of Egypt, under the protection of Chevalier Drovetti, the French Consul, in the year 1828; employed 433 men four months and two days, (if I understand correctly, Egyptian or Turkish soldiers,) at from four to six cents per diem, each man; entered the catacomb June 7th, 1831, and obtained eleven mummies. 69. Oliver Cowdery to William Frey There were several hundred mummies in the same catacomb: about one hundred embalmed after the first order, and deposited and placed in niches, and two or three hundred after the second and third order, and laid upon the floor or bottom of the grand cavity, the two last orders of embalmed were so decayed that they could not be removed, and only eleven of the first, found in niches. Hyrum L. Andrus, Doctrinal Commentary on the Pearl of Great Price, p.13 70. Parley P. Pratt Published the Book of Abraham in England One of the mummies, on being unrolled, had underneath the cloths in which it was wrapped, lying upon the breast, a roll of papyrus, in an excellent state of preservation, written in Egyptian character, and illustrated in the manner of our engraving 71. The record is now in course of translation by means of the Urim and Thummim, and proves to be a record written partly by the father of the faithful, Abraham, and finished by Joseph when in Egypt. After his death, it is supposed they were preserved in the family of the Pharaohs and afterwards hid up with the embalmed body of the female upon whom they were found. 72. Know ye not that I, the Lord your God, have created all men, and that I remember those who are upon the isles of the sea; and that I rule in the heavens above and in the earth beneath; and I bring forth my word unto the children of men, yea, even upon all the nations of the earth? 76. Other Scripture 8 Wherefore murmur ye, because that ye shall receive more of my word? Know ye not that the testimony of two nations is a witness unto you that I am God, that I remember one nation like unto another? Wherefore, I speak the same words unto one nation like unto another. And when the two nations shall run together the testimony of the two nations shall run together also. 77. 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. (New Testament | Revelation 1:3) 79. 2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. (Old Testament | Deuteronomy 4:2) 80. Other Scripture 9 And I do this that I may prove unto many that I am the same yesterday, today, and forever; and that I speak forth my words according to mine own pleasure. And because that I have spoken one word ye need not suppose that I cannot speak another; for my work is not yet finished; neither shall it be until the end of man, neither from that time henceforth and forever. 81. Other Scripture 10 Wherefore, because that ye have a Bible ye need not suppose that it contains all my words; neither need ye suppose that I have not caused more to be written. 82. Other Scripture 11 For I command all men, both in the east and in the west, and in the north, and in the south, and in the islands of the sea, that they shall write the words which I speak unto them; for out of the books which shall be written I will judge the world, every man according to their works, according to that which is written. 83. Other Scripture 12 For behold, I shall speak unto the Jews and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto the Nephites and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto the other tribes of the house of Israel, which I have led away, and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto all nations of the earth and they shall write it. 84. Other Scripture 13 And it shall come to pass that the Jews shall have the words of the Nephites, and the Nephites shall have the words of the Jews; and the Nephites and the Jews shall have the words of the lost tribes of Israel; and the lost tribes of Israel shall have the words of the Nephites and the Jews. 85. Other Scripture 14 And it shall come to pass that my people, which are of the house of Israel, shall be gathered home unto the lands of their possessions; and my word also shall be gathered in one. And I will show unto them that fight against my word and against my people, who are of the house of Israel, that I am God, and that I covenanted with Abraham that I would remember his seed forever. (Moses 7:62-63) (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 29:6 - 14) 86. New Writings will come forth Elder Dallin H. Oaks The Lord not only manifests Himself to all nations; He also commands that they write His words: "Know ye not that the testimony of two nations is a witness unto you that I am God, that I remember one nation like unto another? Wherefore, I speak the same words unto one nation like unto another. . . . 87. New Writings will come forth Elder Dallin H. Oaks " . . . For I command all men . . . that they shall write the words which I speak unto them. . . . "For behold, I shall speak unto the Jews and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto the Nephites and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto the other tribes of the house of Israel, which I have led away, and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto all nations of the earth and they shall write it" (2 Nephi 29:8, 1112; see also 1 Nephi 13:3839). Furthermore, the Book of Mormon teaches that all of these groups will have the writings of the others (see 2 Nephi 29:13). 88. New Writings will come forth We conclude from this that the Lord will eventually cause the inspired teachings He has given to His children in various nations to be brought forth for the benefit of all people. This will include accounts of the visit of the resurrected Lord to what we call the lost tribes of Israel and His revelations to all the seed of Abraham. The finding of the Dead Sea Scrolls shows one way this can occur. 89. New Writings will come forth When new writings come forthandWhen new writings come forthand according to prophecy they willwe hopeaccording to prophecy they willwe hope they will not be treated with the rejectionthey will not be treated with the rejection some applied to the Book of Mormonsome applied to the Book of Mormon because they already had a Biblebecause they already had a Bible (see 2 Nephi 29:310). 90. New Writings will come forth As the Lord said through a prophet in that book, "And because that I have spoken one word ye need not suppose that I cannot speak another; for my work is not yet finished; neither shall it be until the end of man" (2 Nephi 29:9). 91. New Writings will come forth Truly, the gospel is for all men everywhereevery nation, every people. All are invited. We live in the day foretold when righteousness is sent down out of heaven and truth out of the earth "to sweep the earth as with a flood," and to gather out the elect "from the four quarters of the earth" (Moses 7:62). The Book of Mormon has come forth to remind us of the covenants of the Lord, to the convincing of all "that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations" (Book of Mormon title page). I add this, my testimony of Him and His mission, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen. 92. 45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: 46 Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it (New Testament | Matthew 13:45 - 46) 93. In 1851 there were over 32,000 members of the Church in England. Elder Franklin D. Richards, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles published a compilation of several revelations and texts of scripture by the Prophet Joseph Smith and called this collection the Pearl of Great Price. He said it would be a source of much instruction and edification to many thousands of the Saints, who will by an acquaintance with its precious contents, be more abundantly qualified to set forth and defend the principles of our Holy Faith before all men (Millennial Star, 15 July 1851, 217). 94. On 10 October 1880, by action of the First Presidency and the general conference, the Pearl of Great Price became a standard work of the Church. Several revisions have been made in the contents as the needs of the Church have required. In 1878 portions of the Book of Moses not contained in the first edition were added. 95. 1902 certain parts of the Pearl of Great Price that duplicated material also published in the Doctrine and Covenants were omitted. . . . [In 1976] two items of revelation were added. In 1979 these two items were removed from the Pearl of Great Price and placed in the Doctrine and Covenants, where they now appear as sections 137 and 138 (Pearl of Great Price, introductory note). 96. Joseph F. Smith Oct. 10, 1880 I move that we receive and accept the revelations contained in these books(D&C and the Pearl of Great Price), as Revelations from God to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saints, and to all the world. 97.
