10 Tips to Succeeding at Southern
By: Haley J. Higgs
# 1• Go To Class…That’s Why You’re Here– Some professors have strict attendance policies
and others have no policy but what you miss is your responsibility, not theirs’.
– Did you know that professors hate to be asked, “Did I miss anything important?”
# 2• Utilize Office Hours– Believe it or not, professors don’t just have office
hours to fill in space on their syllabus.– Did you know that going to a professors office
during office hours is a great way to gain a better understanding of what is going on in class and it shows the professor that you care about the class?
# 3• Only Put Your Name On What You Did– You are in college now, every paper you put your
name on better be your work or better be cited correctly.
– Did you know that all professors have to do is plug a sentence into Google to see if you plagiarized?
# 4• Accept Extra Credit– Many professors don’t offer extra credit but if it is
offered do it, even if you don’t need the extra points.
– Did you know that doing extra credit when you don’t need it shows the professor that you care about your grade?
# 5• If You Need Help…Get It– The Academic Success Center offers free tutoring
for many of the core classes.– Did you know that they even offer workshops on
study skills, test preparation workshops and computer tutoring software?
# 6• Technology Isn’t Always Friendly– Don’t wait until the last minute to post something
on GAView.– Did you know that GAView goes down a lot and
professors don’t always accept that as an excuse for not having a assignment posted?
# 7• E-mails Make the World Go ‘Round– Check your GSU e-mail daily for updates from
professors, the Dean of Students and Eagle Alerts.– Did you know that professors may send out
assignments in an e-mail on a day you don’t have class that is due the next day?
# 8• Work on Writing– The Writing Center at GSU will work with students
to help strengthen their papers in development, organization and mechanics.
– Did you know that the Writing Center will look over any paper for any class at any stage in the writing process?
# 9• Use Henderson Library– Henderson Library has some great resources when
it comes to research. – Did you know that you can request a book from
any university library in the southeast and it will be delivered to Henderson…FREE!
# 10• “A large university with a personal touch…”– Take advantage of the small classes and the one-
on-one availability of the professors.– Did you know that Georgia Southern is known
nation wide for offering the accommodations of a large university with the feel of a home town college?
