Page 7: 2011 Safety Training

To Prevent Accidents Clean up spills (or block off the area) Eliminate trip hazards Keep work areas clean & orderly Use approved step-stools or ladders only

heat-producing items)

Page 8: 2011 Safety Training

Back Safety Avoid picking up heavy loads below knees

& above shoulders

Page 9: 2011 Safety Training

Proper lifting techniques: Stand close to load - Squat & lift with legs Bend at knees – not waist Keep back straight & keep chin up during lift

Page 10: 2011 Safety Training

Back Safety• Use available equipment to move loads

• Dollies• Hand-trucks

Page 11: 2011 Safety Training

Electrical Safety Use single surge protected power strips (1 per

outlet) Avoid use of multiple power strips

i.e. don’t “daisy chain” strips together Avoid use of extension cords (as a permanent

supply)If a temporary extension cord is necessary, use

grounded (3 prong) cords onlyNo “two-wire” un-grounded cords

Report electrical problems to Facilities Services (ext. 4586)

Page 22: 2011 Safety Training

Labeling – haz-mats must be labeled with their Identity & Hazards.

Hazard Labels – color coded & rated.Red = FireBlue = HealthYellow = Reactivity or InstabilityWhite = Specific hazard (i.e. COR, ACID, etc.)

Ratings - 0 to 40 = no hazard1 = slight2 = moderate3 = serious4=extreme hazard

Page 23: 2011 Safety Training

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) Are required for each hazardous product Must be in readily accessible location Consult the MSDS to determine:

Fire hazards (flammability) Health hazards PPE (personal protective equipment)

Page 24: 2011 Safety Training

Hazardous materials must be properly stored

flammable cabinets or type-specific cabinets (i.e. acids,

corrosives, etc.)

Page 25: 2011 Safety Training

Avoid exposure Use available PPE (gloves, face shields, etc.)

Avoid contact with Infectious materials (i.e. blood, body fluids) Sharps (needles)

If exposed wash thoroughly with soap & water Always report exposures – to Supervisor, H.R. and/or

Risk Mgmt. Don’t clean blood and/or body fluids

Exit Signage

Horns & Strobes

Page 29: 2011 Safety Training

immediately▪ Evacuation is mandatory – per UMHB Policy and Fire Dept.▪ For all alarms (actual or false alarms)

Report to the designated “Emergency Assembly Point”

do not return to building until authorized by Campus Police

Page 30: 2011 Safety Training

Remember to: Keep exit paths, corridors & exit doors clear Never use elevators during fire alarm events Always maintain 18” clearance around fire

The State of Texas requires that building occupants be notified of the presence of asbestos in the workplace.

Asbestos is – a mineral used 1900s to 1970s as insulation and fire retardant material.

Asbestos surveys have been conducted in all UMHB buildings to identify known and suspect Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM).

Asbestos is not a health hazard if in good condition and “non-friable”.

Asbestos is a health hazard if disturbed or becomes “friable” (fibers released). If inhaled or ingested can cause asbestosis, lung

cancer, mesothelioma, etc.
