1 ギルマン小青年期の図書館観の意義

早熟な稀覯本の目録作業経験18 歳前に初代大統領ジョージ・ワシントンの蔵書の一部のカード目録を作成（英国書籍商ヘンリー・スティーヴンス）イェール大学在学中は学生協会リオニアン図書館の運営に携わる（蔵書冊数では当時全米屈指の規模）イェール卒業後　ハーヴァードで地理学を修得指導教員　アーノルド　ギョウ　寄宿先はボストン・アシニアム　チャールズ・フォルソム館長　　両人とも親戚縁者　併せてプールとの懇意になる　ボストン滞在中に『図書館長会議』の企画に専心する

グリーンの批判後年の批判：　この批判は妥当か？作業仮説

… Mr. Poole appears to have been silent, although his remarks, as quoted above, show that he was observant and critical in regard to matters discussed.

Daniel Coit Gilman, so well known later as a distinguished educator, was a member of the convention. He, too, appears to have been a silent member; naturally, as he graduated from Yale College only in 1852 and represented the student Lionian Library of that College. …

３ ギルマンの伝記に記述された図書館像

ギルマン自身が、生前に認知していた評伝　　　　　 1 〜２章　青少年期の執筆は、弟ウィリアムと娘が担当　フランクリン著　原稿は手沢文書の一部イェールのアーカイヴズに原稿が保存されている

本書によれば、家庭新聞 Our paper を出版し、将来の職業はジャーナリスト、図書館員、慈善事業家あるいは聖職者（兄エドワードと同じく） （ Franklin, F. (1910). The life of Daniel Coit Gilman. ）

４ ギルマン文書調査で確認された図書館像アーカイヴズ調査対象の変更

調査対象 Daniel Coit Gilman Papers 　 ジョンズ・ホプキンス大学とイェール大学の 2 機関が分割して所蔵（前者は研究大学建学関係で公的な性格が強い　後者は手沢文書で私的な思い入れが強い）

図書館史的に重要な関係者の書簡やギルマンの関心事を調査

昨年度から　図書館史対象にならなないと推測していた親族の書簡や史料を調査対象にした

1846年８月１８日付　ニューヨーク　　　兄エドワード宛

書簡の内容

Dear Edward,I enquired at the

telegraph office on Saturday with regard to the communication between this place and New Haven. …

Father says if you wish to communicate with him at any time this week, the persons at the telegraph office here will send for him, at your request, any time during business hours.

ニューヨークからニューヘヴン宛に電信を送る所要（電信の発明　 1844 年）お父さんは今週いつでも連絡をとりたければ、電信局から電信を送ってくれ、という伝言ですが、営業時間中に限られます

Library business and Buying Books for others are also forcibly laid aside. As to the latter of these, the New Have bookseller have get of wind of the students plans for buying books at a discount and announce that they can furnish books and “less than pedlow(?) prices”! so that I fear not much can be done by me to compete with them and yet make money.大学 3 年次に図書館ビジネスや書籍売買を考えていたようだが　強制的に対象から外した

父（ Williams ）宛書簡　 1852 年 9月 25日付

イェール大学が保存する Daniel Coit Gilman Papers （生涯手元において手沢文書）には、親族からの書簡も多い。図書館長会議に関連する内容への言及が多いのは父親宛ての書簡。電信も頻繁に利用していたので　往信と返信の一致を確認しにくいものもある。

Poole, of the Merc. Libr. here, whom you perhaps remember in connection with Stevens, the Society Librarian at New Haven and the Athenaeum here in engaged on a new edition of his Index to Periodicals Literature. The work, is almost ready for the press, but needs to be revised.プール氏、当地ボストンのマーカンタイル図書館長で、多分ご存知と思いますが、スティーヴン氏との関係で、ニュー・ヘヴンの学生協会図書館と当地アシニアムと連携して彼の定期刊行物の索引の新版を編集中です。作業自体はほぼ終わり、印刷待ち状態ですが、改訂作業が必要です。

I have never had offered to me. I could hardly, desire a better opening, if it was only in New York or perhaps in New Haven! They are also in want of a Librarian for a little while daily at the Historical Soc., a similar association to the Acad.候補地の検討相手はアシニアム館長チャールズ・フォルソム（従兄弟）

アーカイヴズ調査対象の変更の意義

１）　親族書簡には　伝記等の出版物 (既存研究 )に記載されていない事実が多数確認できる　（最初の評伝の第 1 章を弟ウィリアムズが、第 2 章は娘が執筆している）　執筆時に手沢文書を参照していない　あるいは　参照させなかった　２）　親族の人間関係を踏まえる必要性のある　　∵　ギルマンの親族縁戚にはハーヴァードやボストン・ブラーミンなど東海岸の名家出自がいるハーヴァードの指導教員も Arnold Guyot も縁者　　　

中間報告（本発表の結論）• アメリカの 19世紀図書館運動（革命）は、アメリカの独立運動

(American Revolution) と同様に名家（富裕層）が、植民地体制からの脱却と独立を目指した知的源泉と同様に、友人同僚との自助努力を実践するための契機として、名家が自発的に展開した知の革命運動としての側面があることをギルマン文書は示唆している。その歴史的事件が世界で最初の『図書館長会議（ Librarians‘ Convention ）』であり、本会議を企画立案し、実行した原動力はギルマンであり、その経済的背後権威として父ウィリアムが支援していた。また父はニューヨークの書籍商や図書館関係者とも親しい関係を維持していたことが、書簡から推測される。

• 今後の研究：

• 今回の調査では　専門家や知識人同士の交流以上に家族が知的運動の基盤になっている。当時の学協会、大学、図書館関係者との交流情報を整理して、 19世紀後半の研究図書館（本館と分館関係）体制の関係にも視野を広げる予定である。
