SD&A focuses ondevelopments covering the entire stereoscopic3D imaging pipeline from capture, processing,and display, to perception. Ifthesubmissiondoesnotrespectthisformat(3pages,allthe6pointsexplicitlyaddressed,somepreliminaryresultsshown),itwillnotbereviewedbytheProgramCommittee.

Scientificandtechnologicaladvancesinthefieldsofimageacquisition,processing,telecommunications,andcomputergraphicsduringthelastdecade,havecontributed to the emergence of new multimedia,especially3Ddigitaldata.Nowadays,theacquisition,processing, transmission,andvisualizationof three-dimensional objects are a part of possible andrealistic functionalities over the internet. Confirmed3Dprocessingtechniquesexistandalargescientificcommunity hardly works on open problems andnew challenges, including 3D data processing,transmission, fastaccess tohuge3Ddatabases,orcontentsecuritymanagement.

The goal of this conference is to explore the roleof human perception and cognition in the design,analysis,anduseofelectronicmediasystems.Overthe years, it has brought together researchers fromawidevarietyofscientificandtechnicaldisciplines,fromallovertheworld,forarichandlivelyexchangeof ideas. Color imaging has historically been treated as aconstant phenomenon well described by threeindependent parameters. Thereare several broadproblemareas that havereceived significant attention in recent years. Forexample, some industries are collecting enormousamounts of image data from product monitoringsystems.Newandefficientmethodsarerequiredtoextract insight and to perform process diagnosticsbased on this historical record. Regarding thephysical scale of the measurements, microscopytechniquesarenearingresolutionlimitsinfieldssuchas semiconductors, biology, and other nanoscaletechnologies. Techniques such as resolutionenhancement,model-basedmethods,andstatisticalimaging may provide the means to extend thesesystems beyond current capabilities. Withtheadventof low-cost/high-performancevideosensors, imaging platforms, and computationalequipment, it has become increasingly possible toprocessvideostreamsinreal-timeonaffordablecloudcomputationalservers,desktopsystems,andvarioushandheldmobiledevices.Majorapplicationsofthesetechnologies span the spectrum from surveillance,transportation,remotesensing,socialmedia,sports,retail, and biomedical to name a few. Only recentlyhas the potential for these technologies begun tobe realized in various commercial, government andconsumerbasedapplications.Forinstance,automatedvideo understanding can enhance surveillance/monitoring systems beyond what is possible forhuman operators alone. These systems are beingdevelopedtomaintainlong-termsurveillanceonlargenumbers of video streams for various applicationswith minimal or no manual intervention. In addition,automatedsystemscancoordinatemultiplecamerasandprovide“synopsis”viewsofactivitiesthatcanbeused topredict/analyzepotentialeventspreorpostmortem.Ontheotherhand,transportationsystems,thelifebloodofoureconomicandsociallives,arefarfromtheiridealstate.Vehicleaccidentsarethenumberonecauseofdeath in theUSforages4 to34,andexpectedtosurpassdiseaseasacauseofdeathforallagesworldwideby2020.Bysomeestimates,halfthefuelconsumedinSanFranciscoisconsumedwhilesearchingforaparkingspace.Vehicularcongestionisaleadingcauseoflostproductivityandthefuelefficiencyconsiderationshavetraditionallyreceivedverylimitedattentioninthedesignofpresentdaysystems.

Overthepasttwodecades,variousvideoanalyticsalgorithms have been proposed for autonomousunderstandingofevents foravarietyofsurveillanceand transportation type applications. The ease of capturing, manipulating, distributing,and consuming digital media (e.g. images, audio,video, graphics, and text) have raised a numberof important security challenges to the forefront.These issues have prompted significant researchand development activities in the areas of digitalwatermarking,steganography,datahiding,forensics,media identification and encryption to protect theauthenticity,security,andownershipofmediaobjects.Researchresults intheseareashavealsopromptednewparadigmsandapplications tomonetizemediaobjectswithoutviolatingtheirownershiprights.

Mobileplatformsarebecomingincreasinglyimportantandcapable;thecomputationalabilitiesaregrowingbyleapsandbounds.Withtheadventofsmalllow-costimagesensors,ithasnowbecomepossibletobuildultracompactcamerasembeddedinmobiledevices.The classic camera approach is challenged by thecomputationalpowernowavailable toend-users (intheformofFPGAs,multicoreCPUsandGPUs)andthemorphingofphotography intomobilecomputationalphotography.Computationalphotography isalreadyemerging as a stand-alone field. As today’s mobiledevices with embedded cameras are becomingubiquitous, mobile computational photography isseamlesslycarvingitsownplace.Thetrendofusingcameras in mobile devices is expected to continueto grow at an enormous rate particularly given theunprecedentedadvancesandinvestments insensorarrays, multiple modality sensors, cloud computingservers,andsmartmobiledevices.
